Would it be worth it to start a new alt or use an existing one that has more skills, but industrial attribs? (I once wanted to use my achura alt for *gasp* industry).

Personally, I'd start another character. My current character: 155k SP and 18 skills. Is that not ridiculous or what? 155k sp? 18 skills? Hello? Nerf Caldari. And when the new "Heavy Assault Rockets" come out. Heh. It'll be even more overpowered.
Because I said so...

All T1 un-named except the weapons.
Obviously you need to use extreme caution with the smartie but it can kill 2 waves of 5 light drones or one wave of medium drones before the shields run out. Then you can torture/ransom/whatever the barge at your leisure. T2 drones would probably be it's end but I haven't seen any barges using them yet. Not even the Hulk that went down, very, very slowly. (Still waiting for my war dec from that one, people make all these promises in the heat of the moment :()
The webs not really needed it just means you can sit still and not have to watch your seperation from things all the time.
Being Caldari it hadn't even crossed my mind to armour tank. :p I'll have to give it a go.
If it wasn't going to take a month to train I'd get a covetor and set one of them up for battle. It'd be a lot more expensive but Comedy Gold.
A covetor is going to be a tight fit. What sort of build are you thinking as there are no turret or launcher hardpoints (I've tried to put guns on a barge before).

I was thinking
Highs: Small nos (x3) Mid: Warp Scrambler Lows: EANM II (maybe a thermal hardener instead, most miners seem to use thermal or em drones), Small Armor Rep II
Then just use drones for damage. Maybe 1 web drone and the rest lights or all mediums. T2 drones and good drone skills would probably make it much more effective.

Been trying this with an Iteron V. Its fun; but, really hard to get people to flag themseslves. What sec do you guys normally try this in? I also get a twinge of remorse after the deed if they decide not to pay a ransom. Maybe I'm not cut out to be a pirate :\.

Been trying the Caracal trick. You can actually pull this off in 0.6 also- you just get off the 2nd volley before you pop. First try got me 2 Strip Miners \o/
Knowing this will make life easier, trying to find Retrievers in 0.5 space was quite hard, it was mainly Covetors.... and Macro/ Sweatshoppers in Covetors at that

You can do it for cheaper in a destroyer. Fit 7 or 8x small blasters, walk up, scram and open fire. You can kill a covetor in .5 space before concord arrives.

I've found it easy to get people to flag themselves. I turn up in a cruiser, do the jet can ore swap trick. I'm guessing that with 24 ice in my can they'd like it back so they turn up with an itty 4/5 with cargo expanders (or equivalent). They align to jump and they'll jump just after looting your can. The timing is critical as you have to hit the scram as soon as the ore/ice disappears from the can otherwise they'll warp away. Alternatively you can bump their ship. Bloody hard to time but a lot of fun.
I even had one guy who slipped through and he got his ore and then came back to loot my ratting cans still flashing red. Prior to his arrival he convo'd me to abuse me then left the channel. A rifter with 1mn ab and nanofibre structure doesn't last long vs a cruiser. It's amazing how many people want to convo you with a 100k cscp charge.

Yes, but with what skillset? The point of the OP's Caracal trick was to do it with minimum skills. If you can do that with a destroyer, with T1 weapons, with just basic skills, I'll be switching to that. I'll give it a go later.
From the game logs, you get 19 or 20 seconds tops in a 0.6 system to from initiation to your destruction.

Sure. But if you pick your targets, you can get quite a few kills before you're kicked out of .9. Then just continue in .8, .7 etc. until you're down in .5 and .4 =]

I only mine players so you might find me anywhere. Typically you'll find me in a Celestis "mining" ore from their can into my can and then into my hauler. You don't need mining lasers to mine large quantites of ore and ice.

A long time ago there were a great many of us, and it is very sad to me that they are all gone. Many names, many badger II's OF DOOM. I see Ashley Sky is still active. Hehe if she should see your post, the pleasant memories and stories it would bring back to her.
You can search old posts for many more stories such as these, but none as well written, save perhaps one. There was one story of a young begger girl with her Tech II baby, and her tin can she used to shake (tink tink) as she pleaded for iskies, and of her exploits and conquests. I can't remember her name.
I do remember one fellow though, long gone now it seems, Big Doggy was his name, and boy did he **** off the miners. But seems he either left the game or ****ed off one too many once too often. |

Wow - haven't checked this thread in a while and it's taken a whole new turn!
The former victim of an empire caracal gank with about 300m of loot (back in the day when the yulai freeway was 5 jumps or so and concord was slowwww ... I havent' given it much thought since.
There are some sweatshop miners in shihuken with very nice t2 fittings I wanted to try this out on. Problem of course, it is .9. But I figured, I have way better missile skills than any startup char so why not give it a whirl?
Well, I swear I thought my second round went off, but it didn't, and the concord justice was swifter than it used to be. My target was a covetor with 3 ice miners IIs and some nice 27% expanders. He was taken to 1/2 armor with the first round (although I did have one em missile in the bunch that I would swap out next time).
I still need tot rain warhead upgrades and caldari cruiser to 4 which is being done right now, but I think that the answer is to just bring two caracals. Some of these guys have 50m of fittings in one ship. Has to be worth it, right?
Anyway, it was fun, thanks for the idea :-)

Edited by: MrShooter on 04/09/2006 03:53:20 I just witnessed a badger pirate attack in sobaseki. The guy snagged a retriver and attempted to ransom him multiple times for 2 mil isk, the player in the retriver refused, saying he didn't have 2 mil. The guy in the retriver was down to his last bit of hull, and the tiny fragment of sheild keeping him alive was bleeding away under the fire of a neutron blaster. The guy in the retriver would have been doomed, but the most unlikely thing of all happened.
A random carebear in an osprey with sheild transfer arrays and remote armor repairers was floating 4km away, locking onto the retriver.
I quickly repaired the retriver's armor and sheild to 100%, and kept it that way untill the badger pilot got bored and accepted a 800k ransom from the retriver pilot.
I really need to find something useful to do.

Just some advice- in a .9 you'll never get off a second volley. 5x med shield extenders or not. Just won't happen. And with 2x caracals, you can drop a retriever (mid sized barge?) with 2 caracals with cruiser3 and heavy missiles3 just fine. Don't need to train Warhead upgrades. If you're hitting larger/hardened targets, just use more caracals, not more skills. The amount of extra damage that you get from skills etc. will be too little per ship to make up for just getting another caracal.
Because I said so...

Exclamation Of Intense Laughter
I enjoyed this thread immensely and found myself laughing heartily at the harrowing tales of Badger piracy. I have recently acquired the skills to fly a Badger 2 and have purchased one (which is currently in the Feythabolis region in ASCN space in the south).
Disturbingly, this thread has caused me to become very tempted to go and pick it up, to fit it out with lots of those multispectral jammer things, and to go on a kamikaze pirating adventure with it in Stain, where I am currently located....
Thanks for the great laughs in this thread.

Well, this saturday I was a bit bored (not to mention lagged), and while reading the forum I stumbled over this thread. Thinking it sounded like an interesting little adventure, I started fitting a spare Badger II with the bare essentials (mostly like the build in the first post).
I decided to go for one of the busier systems in Lonetrek, trawled through all the belts, and only saw one jet-can being filled by an Osprey. Judging this below my dignity (not to mention that I don't like to hurt newbies), I relocated to another neighboring system, which had a few more belts.
Searching again, the two first belts yielded nothing but a Badger mining on his own with his single laser. The third belt though, contained a number of newbies mining in their Ibis'... AND... a barge using a jet-can with a fat Bestower immediately beside it
Hmmm, this looks interesting I thought. Why not give it a try? The barge had a number of combat drones swarming around it, but as I was approaching they were recalled. The prey was alert! Expecting that they had also retrieved all their ore from the can I opened it, and saw that it still contained generous amounts of precious rocks Well, to work! Jettison a single antimatter charge, move all their ore to my new can... Wait...
It didn't take long. I'd expected any possible retaliation to come from the barge with the launching of its drones, but suddenly the Bestower started flashing red. He'd tried to take his ore back!
Time for battle! Feeling the adrenaline of going into combat, I start locking.... locking.... locking... (damn, need to get a sensor booster).... LOCKED!!!! Time to engage! Warp Scrambler Active... Web Active... NOS Active... Jammers Active... Closing to optimal range (800m *lol*)... BLASTER ACTIVE!!!
Slowly his shields drain away.... Then his armor.... One of his mining friends join the fight (in his Ibis..), shooting at 10km range with what appears to be a newbie gun The target is now into structure.... and.... KABOOM!
Now his friend/alt in the barge locks me up! Feeling more action coming my way, I start locking him back. In the 25 seconds that takes, I scoop the ore from my jet-can, and opens the loot can from the Bestower. It takes a moment for me to realise what I'm seeing! I'm stunned at looking at TWO LOCAL HULL CONVERSION EXPANDED CARGO I's!!!!! Suddenly this whole venture takes a turn. Now it is not only for fun, but also potentially very much profitable! Local's are transferred to my hold before the barge pilot realises it, and though I had planned on staying to kill the shooting Ibis (maybe the barge if he aggro'ed), I decide it is time to make an exit with my ill-gotten gains.
Safely docked in station, I take a brief look at the kill mail, and again can't believe my eyes. Among the stuff destroyed is ANOTHER(!) 2 Local Hull cargo expanders!! I don't know whether I should laugh or cry
While waiting for aggro to expire, I have an incoming convo. Hmmm, it is from the victim.... Expecting a generous amount of smack talk, the first words that greet me is 'good gank'. The ensuing conversation is very polite, but turns slightly nasty (though still polite) when he informs me that he has petitioned me for using an exploit to kill his ship. At that point I had actually decided to give him one of the locals back (not both though), but since I hadn't been using any exploits (since confirmed by GM's) I decided to be nice, but not that nice! I explained my method, and pointed to this thread, but the convo ended shortly after that.
Respect for the victim for not going into smack-talk mode despite his considerable loss. Somewhat less respect for him accusing me of exploiting instead of admitting his mistake.
So, in retrospect, this was probably the most fun I've ever had in EVE. Taking a Badger into battle gives you quite a nice adrenaline rush, and seeing what possible rewards you can get will definitely have me trying this again |

Ah this is an inspiration. Finally a use for the Destroyer Skill I trained!
Get myself and a couple of friends. Two Destroyers (Thrashers with Artys, gyros etc...) and one in an indy to pick up the ore and loot.
Going to have to try this out later
Will have to let you know how it goes.

I have heard about a certain fellow named Murder One. His exploits inspired me to take action of my own. You see, Murder One had converted a badger Mk. II into a lean, mean, fighting machine. The stories of unsuspecting, defensive miners getting a nice little shock when that ore thief just popped their barge along with their can touched a special place in my heart. I decided to emulate Mr. One's actions and try this little mini-profession of high security industrial piracy myself.
I looked at my list of skills first to see if I had what was needed of me, but alas I found my Caldari Industrial skill lagging behind the rest at a low but healthy level 0. So I decided to try the next best thing; I converted my old Bestower, the Saxosus, to a deadly hardened vessel of my own; complete with a nice Medium Pulse laser, full propulsion and target jamming equipment, and three layers of resistance plating.
With my new Battle Bestower I undocked from my station and, like a newborn Slaver Hound, set out on trembling limbs into this new world. What challenges awaited me amongst ancient asteroids I would meet head on. I started off small; scanning my local system for any unsuspecting asteroid-killers from the parent planet of the asteroid belts. After a few empty scans I smiled as I saw my scanner fill up with entries: two Covetors and an Iteron Mk. III. Oddly enough they had their personal names registered as the ships themselves, allowing me to locate them in the local comms channel. The two Covetor pilots were unaffiliated, thus making easy targets.
I warped to the asteroid belt and hit the afterburners with a vengeance. They continued mining, oblivious to the foreign industrial vessel rocketing towards them. As the jettison containers came into range I deftly scooped the contents into my own hold. Seconds seemed like minutes as the time past with no reaction from the miners. Were they blind? Were they daft? I had just pilfered their hard work and yet they remain still. I waited around the belt for a few minutes more until, dishearten but not completely discouraged, I set course for the nearest planet swarming with asteroid belts.
You'd be amazed at how many people are content with letting you sweep up their rock collections.
A change of scenery would be good, I thought to myself. I made my way over to the neighboring system. With any luck I would find a willing mark there. Unfortunately the same scene played out before my eyes many times: miners continuing on with their business all the while ignoring the diminishing contents of their cargo containers. However, a few situations of note did occur. A miner got off lucky when his accompanying industrial ship tractor beamed the cargo container away just in time to avoid being sucked into the cavernous cargo bay of my ship.
In one occurrence I had decided on a change of tactics. After scooping up the ore I jettisoned it from my cargo with an apologetic note attached hoping the miners would take back their precious shiny stones, all the while oblivious to the heavily armed vessel sitting next to them. This tactic did bear fruit after a lengthy wait. The hauler accompanying the miners took back the plundered ore and the battle was on! I begged for my targeting scanners to lock onto the vessel before it made it's exit, but alas as I was about to activate my warp scrambler the Iteron Mk. V warped away to safety.
After a long night of baiting with no bites I decided to dock for the night. The next day would be successful.
