As we've all seen on the news posted as you enter the game, or if you never notice it, Microsoft and CCP are no longer supporting Windows 98, 98SE, and ME. I was wondering if there was anyone here who is still running one of those operating systems. ___________________________ |

If any poor muddled souls out there are still using win95/98/ME, they will weep for joy when they see the stability difference when they are finally forced to upgrade to 2000/XP anyway :P

Windows OS
Better buy that OEM fast, MS takes away the authorized license to sell OEM, for the type of misuse of the OEM-bundle that site is offering. The OEM is intended for a PC, not a part of a PC like a mouse or other periphial.

Well no, I'm making sure versions of everythig I use will keep 2k/XP support, and transitioning away from programs which will not, actually. In at least one case, directly introducing someone to an OpenGL coder...

Sure, there are going to be players affected by the lack of future support, but we are talking about a comparatively small number of users compared to the EVE community as a whole. 0.7% of the EVE community works out to be less than 980 users affected.
(For those doing the math at home, we are just under 140,000 active subscriptions.)
It is always a rough decision to drop members of the community, but we don't have much of a choice otherwise.

IOI: 0
I have a tweaked version of 98se on one of my systems (Tweaked with 98lite, Unoffical Service Pack 2 and 982ME among other things).
It's not my main box so I'm not really affected, but there have been times I've used that system to play EVE. So it'll be a minor annoyance, that's all. ---- IOI? |

I've been running the latest x64 vista beta on my machine a while now, runs smooth as, but I always upgrade my comp. Most games so far actually run better under Vista than on XP. Of course when Vista comes out I think it will be in a messy state... IE Windows 98, the first edition anyone? (if you remember what horror that was).
Anyway, if your running 98 it's really your own problem, you've had years to upgrade. -=====-

I for one am happy to see this change. Far too many games support OSs and hardware that should no longer be in existance.
That kind of crap is what makes the code so fat and bloated and hurts gameplay for the rest of us.
People have had like 6 years or more to upgrade, time to move on.

Well see if its a train wreck or not, but my bet is you hope it is but it wont be one.
It's already a train wreck. Constant delays and promised features that were later cut makes it the epitome of every Microsoft OS since DOS 1.0.
Let's see:
1990 -- Windows 3.0 1992 (+2 years) -- Windows 3.1 1995 (+3 years) -- Windows 95 1998 (+3 years) -- Windows 98 2000 (+2 years) -- Windows ME 2001 (+1 year) -- Windows XP 20?? (+5 years, at least) -- Windows Vista
Even if we pretend ME never happened (a perfectly resonable thing to pretend), that's still only 3 years between 98 and XP. We're now going on 6 years with no major new release. What the frack are they doing over there?
This doesn't mean it will suck when it's released, but I think it's fair to call it a train wreck already. ---- "Well in this case, he's being flamed, and rightly so, for whinning about a game mechanic that doesn't actually exist." -Lorth |

Replace 'Vista' with 'XP' and 'XP' with '98' and you have the situation with XP.

I've used the latest Vista beta release (2.2? i'm not at the computer right now) and I can say it's looking good so far, a little nannying perhaps but that can be controlled. One question, I SERIOSULY don't get what everyone thinks was wrong with ME, i'm not being silly or anything I really mean it.. I feel left out. Please fill me in.

<OSX fan mode>Sorry, I couldn't resist: Please click this link. It's a video on Google Video. Basically, as the video description mentions: "Microsoft Vista feature presentation with the video replaced by a OSX desktop." Everything the guy mentions about what's so great about Vista, the guy who made the video does the same in the CURRENT version of OSX. In other words, we've had some of these nice features for some time now :)</OSX fan mode>
In all seriousness tho, I hope it's better than XP, I really do, but I'll wait and see when they actually decide to release it.

When Microsoft realized that they (yet again) weren't going to get the NT kernel into a home-based OS, they slapped ME together by graphing some of the features of NT over Win98. The result created a worst-of-both-worlds situation. They still had the same stability problems that plagued all DOS-based Windows OSen, but also had the driver and application support of NT (which was limited at the time). Plus many of the features that were seen in NT or later in XP (like system rollback) didn't work.
Thus, most people either went to Win2k, or stayed with Win98 SE2. At the very least, ME didn't give you anything over Win98, and was often detrimental.
If you didn't personally run into it's problems, then I'd have to say that you were at the far end of the bell curve. ---- "Well in this case, he's being flamed, and rightly so, for whinning about a game mechanic that doesn't actually exist." -Lorth |

Thank you! That was a great reply to my question and you've enlightened me now, I consider myself lucky that i've not had any problems yet then, again, Thank you for a very concise answer.

Capacity that with OpenGL 2 you can have on virtually ANY platform you care to name, including (OpenGL ES) the PS3. Your point?

Vista is going to be the worst piece of meecrab ever created. Even IF they manage to release a somewhat stable build there's no way I'm putting up with all that built in DRM until I absolutely have to. I'd sooner switch to Linux and stick to older games tbh.
