I've was flying a Thorax for quite some time. Firstly I think its a great ship for both mining and NPC killing.
Dont think I need to tell you what you need for mining.. So I'll move on to the killing loadout.
High Slots
4 250mm Rails (Depends on your skill lvl's) 1 Nutron Blaster I (for close encounter)
Mid Slots
1 Shield Hardner (changes depending on what rats your up against) 1 Meduim Shield Booster 1 MWD
Low Slots
Mixture of Reactors and Power Diags (basically enough to give you the required powergrid) If there is any space left throw in some damage mods for those Hybrid.
Drone Bay
8 Wasps or other large Drones.
Keep your target at about 15 - 20K and use AM ammo. You will deal some pretty nice damage depending again on all your gunnery skill lvl's
Good luck

my fitting for NPC's, can kill at any range from point blank up to 30km, and does the job FAST (5-10seconds to kill a blood oracle):
1x heavy beam laser with infrared, 50dmg average up to 30km, 4s firerate
1x 720mm howitzer projectile with plasma ammo, 100-200dmg up to 28km, 13s firerate
1x 650mm projectile with plasma, 50-120dmg up to 22km, 11s firerate
1x focused modal pulse laser, infrared, 50dmg up to 10km, 3.5s firerate
1x quad light beam laser, multifreq, 50dmg up to 4km, 2.5s firerate
small shield booster, cap recharger1, webifier to stop the nps¦s for better accuracy, 2x reactor control unit1 to get the powergrid neccesary, gyrostabilizer1 for proj and heatsink1 for lasers. then an overdrive to gain some speed

Good responses so far - all I can add is when using Drones - Diversify. Ogres and Wasps are great HD's but they are slow - so use some Infiltrators / Preators and some Hammerheads as well. They take down the shields and the HD's go for the kill. BEWARE THE SWARM!!

Would not bother with a MWD unless you can afford to lose 50% shields.

My advice:
1. Never mix weapon types. Thorax gives bonus to Hybrids. So guess which weapon type I would recommend?
2. Focus on a certain range. Dont mix weapons of different ranges. Otherwise, you could never concentrate your fire/damage.
3. Think twice about your MWD. Better equip an AB for 0.0 space.

harpoon, as i said my fitting is for NPC's, and focusing at one range only is just making yourself more job. I really dont recommend using only hybrids since you have 3-8km effective range on them, hence you can only kill one target at a time leaving you a sitting duck for the other npc's which are longer away from you. I want to be able to kill an oracle which is 5km from me and also kill an arch reaver which is 25km from me at the same time.

Depends on what type of rats and which system. In non-empire 0.0 space against 40 and 50 k rats, a thorax just wont cut it. I think a couple 20 and 30 with one 50 it can handle.
The big problem with the thorax is its crappy CPU, Power, and Cap. If youre fighting really tough rats, a MWD cuts your shields in half and your cap by 25% basically suicide. For everything else it is a joy to have.
I prefer keeping my shields running so I can stay out longer and prefer fighting close up so llecting cargo is a snap. I ended up using all named ion blasters with AM ammo ( neutron too much power and cap), a small shield boost, a hardener(kinetic), an extender(thermal), an ab 4 power cap relays and 1 damage mod
But seriously screw the Thorax and get a Dom ASAP!

And since when do medium hybrid guns got 3-8km range? I can use regular 250's without any good skills or dmg/range/tracking mods on my alt, and still do hits around 50-70 dmg on 28 km range. And that's not even with a gallante ship. So I suggest you passing the smoke or stop talking crap...
If your not a part of the solution, then you'r probably a part of the problem. |

this is a really predictable loadout but it worked well for me.
High: 4x250mm Rails (tungsten ammo) 1xSmall photon smartbomb
Med: 1xThermal Hardener 1xEM Hardener 1xMedium shield booster (MWD is in cargo so u can travel quickly to the hunting system and swap out before u get there)
Low: 2xReactor Control 1xPhotonic CPU 2xPower Relay 1
Power relays are coool cause they reduce your shield recharge but increase cap recharge. U have a shieldbooster so who needs shield recharge?
THe two hardeners i use is when i hunt in amarr space cause they use lasers which are em and thermal dmg. Personally i really like the smart bomb- so damn satisfying when u destroy a missile (it gets easier with practise). Not the best setup but cautious so u wont get blown up as quickly

"And since when do medium hybrid guns got 3-8km range?"
... Probably since you're thinking of hybrid rails, while the original poster is thinking of hybrid blasters... :s

I use a similar loadout for NPC hunting, but angled more towards maintaining a chain:
Hi slots 3x250mm railguns 2x150mm railguns
Med slots 1 shield hardener (what type depends on what I'm hunting) 1 Med shield booster 1 AB
Low slots 5xCapacitor Power Relay I
This gives me enough of a cap charge rate to maintain a steady stream of 20k sanshas until I run out of ammo. I generally won't use drones against NPCs, since they're expensive to lose.
Against players (granted, I'm not the most experienced PvP player in the world), I'll typically run a magnetometric ECCM module in place of the shield hardener. I've run into situations (Hi, Torquemada) where I couldn't maintain target locks without ECCM.

Mine was vs 20k's and 30k's in Pure blind region.
High Slots 3 Heavy Neutron Blasters 1 2 Heavy Ion Blasters 1 All with antimatter
Medium Slots 1 medium Shield booster 1 Photonic hardner 1 Heat Hardner
Low slot
3 Basic Cap rechargers 1 CPU unit or 1 Reactor Controle
* 8 heavy drones for range combat upto 19km =)
Worked like a charm could kill 7 terrorists at once =))))))!

Edited by: Spyder Murphy on 14/10/2003 12:24:48 My current fittings for Thorax(when not mining er oh did I say that... ) Hi 2x250mm AntiMatter Ammo (range 12k) 3x150mm Thorium Ammo (range 11k) Mid ABx1 small shield booster Med shield booster Low 3xOverdrives 2xMagnetic targetters (the things that help your damage & tracking) 1xreinforced (lack of inspiration... )
If you are gonna fit blasters I would highly recommend using as many speed increasing mods as you can, ions have an optimal range or 600m with AM ammo.
You need to get in close, and quick, the faster you kill them the less damage they can do to you.
Micro Warp Drive If you have the cap skills otherwise fill up with overdrives and AB's. Your Anode Light Neutron Particle Cannon I perfectly strikes Serpentis Smuggler, wrecking for 218.0 damage.

I kill any where from 20k-50k rats, and this is the setup i use.
High slots: 1x dual 150mm prototype gauss gun with thorium ammo (16k rang) 4x 250mm prototype gauss guns with thorium ammo (35k rang)
Med Slots: 1x cl5 medium shield booster, 1x anoited em ward, and 1x 11% cap recharger
Low Slots: 2x Gauss field balancer 1 2x 7.5% cap booster, 7.5% shield booster, 4% max sheild hp, 4% max cap, 5% power grid (i forget the name) 1x 10% power grid booster.
I find this set up amazingly effective, my dmg mod on my 250s is up around x5.7, so i usually hit for around 100 out at 30k. The dual 150 is basically my frigate killer if i ever run into any, it hits fro around 45 dmg every 1.8 seconds.
For drones i use 4 ogres and 4 wasps, pretty typical.
Only really pvped with this a few times. One time i got jammed by a bb, but luckily had drones with me, so they scared him off, and saved my ass =). Other times it has been combat ships such as the mauller, which i seemed to out dmg.
There is one problem with this set up, it can cost around 35 mil..

This is, of course, the trade off...
My Thorax setup (for 20k rats) costs me around 5 mil. Figuring 2.2 mil for platinum insurance, I make a small profit by losing my ship.
Of course Lartfor will make more off of rat hunting with his 35 mil Thorax than I will with my 5 mil one. Like I said, the trade off...

I take somewhat of a chance but I just run with 5X720mm howitzers with various ammos for 25-30km optimal range. Against npcs all u have to do is stay far away and u can shoot them all day long.
Never really had a problem taking down anything at 50K or below.

Edited by: StiZum Hilidii on 16/10/2003 10:05:55 if your hunting ncp in a thorax then i would go for my old setup. doesnt work so well now but heyho.
High slots 5x modal ions
Medium slots 1x thermal hardener 1x ballistic hardener 1x medium shield booster
Low slots 5x cap relay
cap relays are the nutz before the nerf of hardners you could make the thorax into a tank and fire all guns and with some skills maintain cap at 60% the whole time. suppose it was fair to change that just means you have to do it in a bs now.
[btw this was when you could fight 5xbaron in a cruiser] not sure how well it works now and what best rat spawns are for it now STAN
