I blush with the n00biness of this question. I can lock multiple targets and my three turrets make short work of the first, but then they all go to the Inactive state whilst the remaining NPC rats beat on me! Is there some way of keeping guns active without continually having to manually activate them after a kill??

No, every weapon has a cycle time, so when a shot is fired it'll wait to complete the cycle, regardless if the target is still there or not you HAVE to wait to complete the cycle, then you can start shooting other targets. Note that some modules DO reset their cycle when the target is destroyed.
You could counter it by using your guns on different targets at the same time but that's not really working in your favor because it'll then take you longer to kill a target.

Nope, you have to activate them every time.
Think of it like a safety switch - you have to re-confirm that you want to shoot this target.
Always a good idea if you've accidentally locked a loot can, one of your drones or a neutral target (the last will get you Concorded in safe space).

No. If you are really killing them quick, then activate 1 gun on 1st npc, then click on next npc, activate 1 gun on that, etc.,.
It's usually better to concentrate fire though, so i'm afraid you'll just have to reactivate the guns on next target like the rest of us
It wouldn't really be a good idea for the guns to activate onto the next target, because they probably wouldn't shoot at the one you wanted them to. (try cat herding, sorry I mean using drones, and you'll see what I mean )
