Edited by: Astorothe on 21/08/2006 12:48:23 Apocalypse - PvE Level 4 Solo Tanker (Not for PvP)
Please note that this thread is not for PvP. This discussion is only related to a Level 4 PvE environment as stated in the title.
Purpose: I'm currently preapring an Apocalypse for PvE level 4 missions with one of my alt characters. I have good skill points in the right categories (around 8.5 million), and feel I should be able to get a very good ship setup. My main goal is that I want to be able to tank and complete level 4 missions solo. I'd like to also have extra modules on hand so that when I am flying with my corp (who will also both be using Battleships), I can remove a few of the tank modules and throw in some gank. But my primary setup needs to be aimed for Solo level 4 - because of timeszones I tend to play a lot without my corp buddies. I'd love some help and recommendations on how to set this up, as I havnt found a decent PvE setup on the Eve O forums to date.
Highs: 6x Mega Anode Partcile Stream I 2x ? I'd like to fit more lasers or cruises in here, but Im short of CPU
or
8x Mega Anode Pulse Particle Stream I
Reasoning: I can only use T1 lasers at this stage, and the Tachyons are just way to slow in tracking and far to heavy on the grid. I felt the Mega Anode was a good balance between ISK vs Stats aswell. Im not sure whether the longer range 6 beams are more suitable, or the 8 pulses. Ive got no experience with ranges in level 4 missions so I do not know.
Mediums: 4x Capacitor Rechargers II
Reasoning: Cap is life - and a laser BS needs cap. I need to be able to tank this thing against enemy BSs and the like.
Lows: 2x Large Accommodation Vestment Reconstructor 1x Armour Explosive Hardener II 1x Armour Kinetic Hardener II 1x Armour Thermal Hardener II 2x Capictor Power Relay II
Reasoning: The massive tanking ability with these modules, plus my Armour skills give me armour resists all in the 60-70's. Im pretty sure this should prevent the need of a plate, but time will tell.
Im looking for some help to tweak this setup - I'll keep updating this top post as ideas come on in. My main question is regarding the guns: would switching to 8x pulses be a viable offensive setup for level 4 missions? I'm assuming that when you warp in - it will be at close range?
Thanks to all in advance for keeping this thread on topic - I'm not looking for the "I win setup", just some thought from those more experienced in Level 4's.
Cheers all.

That won't cut it...
I guess you don't use LAR II's because of fitting and take tech 1's.. are CPR II's even out?
I've done quite a few lvl 4's in my domi and i have 80% resistances (rat specific ofcourse, on lvl4 mishes you will want to tank rat specific).. in certain mishes I need to warp (often even) usually the ones i need to tank across the board..
What lil i understand about guns is laser drain cap like a <insert fitting comparison here>.. I use either 5 eutectic cap rechargers or 4 and a cap relay and i am only able to tank continuously using a LAR II .. to use the second one (5 eutectics, the cap relay is a switch for dual repper setup) i need my 3 e500 nosses hard (even then it's usually just 2-3 mins of uber tanking before cap = dry)
And I don't use guns...
You sould be able to kill targets quite a bit quicker than me with my drones, but that still leaves an aweful lot of dmg to tank
be sure you can kill from 5-55 km on lvl 4's (some of the BS tend to hang back a lot)
missions are quite different from ratting and some of the missions have idiotic dmg.. the dual repper setup is just to get out alive/get the dmg dealers before you get killed..
also you will want to be able to kill all the friggies so maybe a smartbomb or drone skills ... or heck assalt launchers for all i care :)
as for in general ... lvl 4's are usually close to enemy but you can get far away too depends a lot on the mission.. and you'll want 70-75 % resistances minimum
- All the stuff above does not necessarily reflect my corp, my alliance or even me - Pure drone user... give us a mini carrier and faction Typhoon and Dominix please |

And if you wanna use beams (wich imo is superior to pulses in Pve in lvl4 by a long shot)
Using not to high skilled modules here so alot of people can use this setup
4 x Mega Modulated Beams 4 x Dual Modulated Heavy Beams
4 x Cap Recharger II's
2 x Large Armor Rep t2 3 x Armor Hardener of choise t2 2 x Cap Relay
Dronebay: 5 medium drones (for cruisers) 5 light drones (for frigates)

As noted, cap power relay II's are not out-best you can do are the faction ones that are better than plain T1, but not by much and are really expensive.
If you can work a setup that allows you to run both armor reppers and you can figure out how to get LAR T2's on there, you'll be in business. TBH, your current setup would do almost all if not all L4's, but you wouldn't be able to do them while taking a nap.

Not wishing to put too much of a dampener on things, but I can't see that setup dealing enough damage to survive the tougher L4s, even if the guns were T2'd up. Tanking is only half the problem; just sitting there absorbing damage isn't going to win you the fight.
There are only two ships in which I'd consider taking on L4s solo: the Raven and the Dominix. The former because it can fit a highly efficient tank (read: Gist) without gimping its damage output, and the latter because it can just Nos to keep its tank up. The Raven has spare slows for BCS and the Dominix doesn't rely on mods for its damage output.
That's not to say there isn't a solo Apoc setup that can hold its own, but I think it's going to need a lot of faction equipment to squeeze in the space for damage mods while maintaining a dual LAR tank.

Thanks guys - have made some edits to the OP to reflect new ideas.
What about Beams vs Pulses - quick fit shows me getting a much higher DPS with pusles, but of course they put myu optimal range in the 20-50km range instead of 70-90.
Plus, with Beams I have two free hi slots and not enough CPU to put anything of note in there.
I dont expect to be able to run both Repper's all the time - only kicking in the second when needed for short bursts. I'm only about 4 days away from LAR II's so have updated the post above.
Thanks.

Well, i'd like to see an Apoc setup that can do just that.
And actually that leads me on to another point, is Apoc really the best Amarr ship for L4 missions? I don't fly an Absolution but I imagine it does a good job too.

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but....i didnt see an AB or a tractor beam fitted anywhere....how do you get your loot and/or manuever during battle?
also....do you guys use the "regular" laser crystals or the "advanced" ones (like Gleam)...i used the advanced crystals once...they dont last very long and they sure are expensive....

Apocolypse is pretty good ratting machine against most npcs, especially Bloods, but against angels forget it. You'll really need Amarr BS level 4 to make good with the cap bonus. Aside from those who use cap booster charges the Apoc can have the highest cap recharge rate and ultimate level of any BS. Look at getting a full cap recharge time of less than 200 secs and you'll be cooking.
Consider the following: 1. Training for tech2 pulses. Scorch crystals are expensive, but are like multifrequency crystals with microwave ranges.
2. Consider fitting a MAR II, which you can run continuously and only use the LARII in bursts.
3. Look at fitting two cruise lauchers. They'll help vary your damage, give you an extended range but also be effective against smaller rats.
4. Consider just sticking to all pulses - or ultimately all beams it can be done.
5. Against Angels consider outfitting with projectile weapons - it may go against the grain using scumbag Minmator weapons, but it can be quite effective.
Oh and an AB would be useful, unless you have someone else pick up your loot.

Edited by: Coryn on 21/08/2006 17:36:07 Edited by: Coryn on 21/08/2006 17:33:56 Um well i am flying lvl4 missions with my Megathron/Vindicator and i think an Apo should do the job quite equal. Use the right hardeners for the npcs and it will go without 2xLARPII, thats nonsense fitting em. Cap drain with one LARP is heavy enough.
"Tanking is only half the problem; just sitting there absorbing damage isn't going to win you the fight." Thats all you have to know ^^
Flying a Worlds Collide in a Mega is a ride on the line, but it works quite well with the Sansha Part (the Gurista Part is to hard in my opinion, Sanshas are peacy of Cake, just aligne and Warp if needed. Range is a must have, dont use Pulse Weapons without Experience a bunsh of 15 Cruisers approaching from 80km with Missile fireing...
When i have the skills to fly an Amarr BS i will test the following i.e.:
Highs: 7x Mega Modulated Energy Beam (Infrared + Gamma Lens) Meds: 1x AB, 3x Eutectic Cap Recharger (Or 4x Cap Recharger) Lows: 2x N-Type Dmg Type Hardeners, 1x Refuge Adaptive Nano, 2x Heatsink, 1x Large Accomo Repper, 1x Halcyon Core Equalizer (Safety ^^)
Dont know how the NPC Resi will drain my DPS, but i'll give it a run, or change my Mission area to the right NPCs ^^ I just run the Quickfit and searchd for something equal to my Mega Fitting. Just my thoughts. Favorite Sanshas ;)

I've tried a multitude of setups for level 4 missions and this is what i recommend:
Highs: 6x Mega Pulse Energy Beams /w Standard, Microwave, Radio, Multifreq Crystals
2x Heavy Nosferatu
and
2x Drone Link Augmentor
for missions with Turret Batteries at long-range such as Duo of Death, and missions with battleships that orbit at 40-50k
Mediums: 4x Capacitor Recharger II
Lows: 2x Large Armour Repairer II 1x Armour EM/Kin Hardener II 1x Armour EM/Kin Hardener II 1x Armour Thermal/Exp Hardener II 1x Armour Thermal/Exp Hardener II 1x Capacitor Power Relay I
and
2x Large Armour Repairer II 1x Armour Explosive Hardener II 1x Armour Kinetic Hardener II 1x Armour Thermal Hardener II 1x Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II 1x Capacitor Power Relay I
Drones: 5x Medium (for cruisers) 5x Light (for frigates)
---------
I use Mega Modulated Pulse, Heavy Diminishing Nos, and True Sansha Energized but it's a build you can grow into. With cap related skills at level 5 and battleship 4 i can run both reppers quite a while without nossing, indefinately when i am, but only if using standard crystals. Download QuickFit and play around before you buy stuff.
Stick with Blood/Sansha missions just starting out, one repper is usually enough for them with the above build, but use the above build because you will need a second large on occasion, even in Blood/Sansha missions. You can use N-Type Hardeners to help with CPU needs, if desperate, it's only like a 2% resist differential.
I've done Right Hand of Zazz several times, takes multiple warp-outs. Done Vengeance with this setup and it does break the 2.5 mil BS tank. Have completed the new Angel version Pirate Invasion a couple times without problems (just have to fit for all types until you know if it's angel or sansha). Never tried Worlds Collide or Silence the Informant, i'm not out to set records, just get rich. |

I used to use dual lar2 on domi, but single lar2 with 6 hardeners is far more effective it seems. Also gives a lot of grid to play around with (although this really doesn't matter on the domi, apoc's guns can use it).

I vote for your setup Exiled One. I used the same setup and never had any trouble in the year I used it. With Amarr BS 5 you can drop a Cap Recharger II and fit a webber for quicker cruiser pwnage.

Edited by: Madcat Adams on 22/08/2006 06:05:25 Here is my current setup, and it's working out rather well so far.
Hi: 7 dual heavy modulated beams, tractor beam
Med: 4 F-B10 cap rechargers (replace with tech 2 as cash flow allows)
Low: 2 LAR IIs, 3 faction specific hardners, 1 best named dmg control, 1 CPR
7 med drones tech II
This tanks dmg very well, and with good skills runs the guns, reppers, and all modules for a very long time. With CR II's believe it will run indefinatly. The dmg control provides a backup system, if armour should fail, this will quite likely save the ship long enough to complete warping out, as well as giving a slight boost all around to tanking. Conventional wisdom states a 5/5 mix of drones. Personally though, medium drones have worked fine against all ship types so far. This way if one or two is lost, combat performance is unaffeted and the mission can continue.

Thats almost identical to my current setup, and it seems to be a very solid one.
I should be on level 4's within the next 4 weeks, so I will be able to test it out for myself. I'll be flying missions in Gallente space, which is new to me, so unsure of the rat types.

You'll face Serpentis and Drones about 80% of the time, the rest will be Angels, Mercenaries and the occasional Sansha and Caldari/Mordus/Guristas. You'll mostly want to be fitting either Kin/Kin/Therm (Serpentis), Therm/Therm/Kin (Drones), EM/Therm/Therm (Sansha), Kin/Therm/Exp (Angels) for three hardener setups.

This information proved very very helpful - thankyou.
However - I think I'm about this close | | to giving up on Amarr Battleships - and I've started training for a Raven.
I've flown Amarr ships the entire duration of this character - nearly two years. It's taken me a long time to feel that I need to quite on them, but here I am.

Yup, that pretty much sums it up.
Apoc is good for tanking until you activate your guns.....unless you use autocannons ofcorse.
Isnt it amazing that the devs are turning their blind eye to this?

First thing you need to understand is that missiles require 5x less sp than gunnery. I got a 1 month old caldari alt running lv3 missions without breaking a sweat, this wouldnt been possible with an Amarr character.
My advice is to either switch to Caldari or wait until Tux gets a reality check and boosts Amarr. (allthough thats not very likely)
