They are collectable, so do you collect them or play them?
I'm undecided.

I'm working on a foil caldari deck that I'll be playing with. My other foils will be going into a collector's folder.

Just put them in plastic wraps and you can play with them without them loosing any value.

I have mine in plastic protectors which I picked up from a place called 'Orc's nest' in London but I'm sure any Roleplayer type shop will sell them.
Because I have them in these protectors it actually makes it more difficult to appreciate the shineyness so I just keep them in the collector's folder. ---

Actually, you have multiple brands of protective card-sleeves available at every respectable games-store. Keeps you cards from getting smudgy, and keeps them in perfect condition (which is a pre when dealing with fanatic card-traders).
My friends and I play many cardgames and have been playing even more through the years, and we tend to use sleeves all the time.
So as far as I'm concerned - foil cards or not - sleeve 'em and play with even the shiney-onez...

OK,
I've looked at some card sleeves. How do you shuffle with them on? right now I use the standard poker type shuffle (lots of bending, cards get seperated into two piles and then "flipped" together so the cards basically alternate from each pile).
I have to assume that if you play with your foil/rare cards in sleeves, it makes sense to put your entire deck into sleeves as to not give away how may rares you've got.
thanks.

standard CCG require you to put eitehr all your cards in sleeves or none.
Furthermore they all have to be the same.
Old MTG days demanded players to play without sleeves. Then they started allowing the sleeves. In curretn events they sometimes demand removing sleeves again to be better suited to be recorded for TV :)

I was actually talking about just that issue the other day with a good friend of mine. Didn't they officially okay sleeves just to speed things up? I was told that sleeves had been allowed if both players agreed, but sometimes just to be a pain people would make their opponents unsleeve, so they'd sit there and unsleeve before the game and resleeve right away afterwards. After all, who's going to carry around naked moxes?

I am one of those people who think that shuffling your cards 'poker-way' is a good way of spoiling them really fast. With sleeves obviously that way of shuffling ain't a big succes, so just don't, mmkay?

With the normal quality type of plastic sleeves 'poker' style flipping just needs some extra practire and you will quickly enough get the hang of it.
Just make sure YOU NEVER flip the sides with the opening !
When you do this you risk alot of sleeves to be destroyed at once when you push them together.

I agree with you that poker style shuffling is bad for the cards - esp w/o sleeves, but how else do you get a good random shuffle?
Luckly, I'm still only playing with the starter decks until I get a good grasp on the game mechanics and can start making my own decks.
Thanks for the help.
Suren.

With the sleeves on, you can still sort of poker-shuffle, but you do it from the sides of the cards, not the ends. You never want the open top of the sleeve to be part of your riffle, so you turn the cards sideways, and riffle-shuffle focussing on the bottom corner. This will still cause some verticle card bending, mostly near the top, but if that is a major issue for you you should probably consider having a seperate playset and trade collection. :P
Some people prefer to just side-slide the cards together - it's slower, but the sleeves make it possible to place the two halves one above the other (again, side to side, not end to end) and sort of shake them together. -------------------------- Just here for the CCG. :) |

I know, I use Guardians.
As far as shuffling goes; I tend to makes random piles on a table, randomly throwing cards on eight different piles (face down of course) and afterwards, sideshuffle a couple of times. Works fine for me (and it didn;t get me banned from any card-tournaments so far either...)

The way most pro-level mtg players do it is a combination of pileshuffling and riffling.
You shuffle the cards by splitting them into 2 stacks, then combining them from their sides.
Repeat the riffle shuffle deal them out into 6 piles, starting like this: Pile 1 Cards : 1,7,13, etc Pile 2 Cards : 2,8,14, etc Pile 3 Cards : 3,9,15, etc Pile 4 Cards : 4,10,16, etc Pile 5 Cards : 5,11,17, etc Pile 6 Cards : 6,12,18, etc Repeat the "pile shuffle" Repeat the riffle
This is easy on your sleeves, and generates a fairly random series of cards. (pile shuffle more if your cards are clumped, less if well spread out like if you are redrawing at the start of the game)
Hope that helps
