Frigates, destroyers, cruisers and battleships all have race-specific skills....but not battlecruisers. Were battlescruisers added as later content, or is there some other reason? Thanks.

Destroyers don't have race specific skills I don't think.. unless there are some for the interdictors, which I wouldn't know because I don't fly them.
And yes, Battlecruisers were added as later content, as were destroyers.

Edited by: Ktan Orta on 21/08/2006 20:53:23 I tend to think of them as sort of T1.5 ships. Destroyers are a step up from frigates, but below assault ships/interceptors. Battlecruisers are a step up from cruisers, but a step below command ships/HAC's. Transport ships are above indies but below freighters (I know, not technically T2 ships). All three are non-race specific skills, just like the T2 ship skills, which also aren't race specific.
Maybe CCP figured that you have to put so much time in the racial ship skills to get to them, they wanted to give everyone a break in not having to train extra skills.

Destroyers are between frigates and cruisers, rather than between t1 and t2. -------------------- Do you have a solution to the BM and instas problem? Test it against the bookmark requirements. |

in the begining there were frigates, cruisers, battleships (and industrials but they aren't important for this question)
cruiser skill required frig 4, BS required cruiser 4, and all was well, but people wanted a stepping stone.
Destroyers and BattleCruisers were added, but rather than change the entire system, or create a race specific skill which would essentially be a dead end (not pre-req for anything else) the ships were set to require the racial frig or cruiser at 3 and an additional skill

It is best to think of Destroyers as heavy Frigates and Battlecruiser as heavy Cruisers. As such they need the racial Frigate or Cruiser skill trained to level 3. As an additional requirement because they are a heavy subclass of firgate/cruiser they require the subclass skill: Destoyers/Battlecruisers. Because these skill are subclass (not major class) specialization they are not mirrored for each race. This is similar to how the subclass skills are required for T2 ships in addition to the racial skill at level 5.

Whoops! Sorry, thought destroyers were race-specific too. I went directly from frigates to cruisers and so never trained for destroyers. The fact that there's only one type of destroyer for each race, like battlecruiser, should have tipped me off.

actually, both destroyers and battlecruisers require race-specific skills to fly. for destroyers it is: Racial Frigate III (primary), Destroyers I (secondary) and for battlecruisers: Racial Cruiser III (primary), Battlecruisers I (secondary).
I believe this is because they are added in between two major classes and acts as intermediate classes. Battlecruisers for example are heavier than cruiser in both armor/shield/hull and signature radius/mass, but lighter than battleships. same goes with the destroyer, they're heavier than the frigates (and sports more weapons), but lighter than cruisers (they'd need some defence boost though, buy that's not a this thread's issue). Also both destroyers and battlecruisers use modules designed for their smallr couterparts (small guns/modules for destroyers and medium for battlecruisers).
The truth is out there...

I'm also sure that there was at one time (not sure if still the case) 'generic' ship skillbooks for the likes of Carrier, etc. They just haven't been implemented yet, or not going to be.

So, to ask a total newbie question...Do I need to train all the frigate levels, before I move on the next level of ships? I am an Amarr and have level 4 frigate, which gives me the best (that I know of) frigate (the Punisher). Do I need to train to level 5 so that I can start level one of the next class of ships? Or is that a totally different skill? If it is a different skill, what benefit do I get for training to frigate level 5?
Thanks for any help.

You only need what Cruiser skill requires, which is level 4 frigate.
Frigate skill gives a bonus per level based on the frigate you're flying. Its listed in the ship description.
