Is it possible to open a giant secure container and put stuff in it, while it is still inside your cargo bay on the ship?

Yes hence why they cost a fortune as tehy take up 9km3 of space but hold 9.5km3 space inside them so you can hold that little extra

The correct amounts are 3000m3 and 3900m3.

I'll buy 3 of those and fit in my hauler 
volume: 3000 m3
capacity: 3900 m3
Gives me 2700 extra m3 cargo space

Sorry to hijack, but I don't want to open a new thread for this simple but related question..
If you use giant secure containers, then when players cargo scan you, they'll only see the containers but not the contents inside? If so, isn't that an easy way to prevent getting suicide ganked?

Yep, that is how it works. And AFAIK people cant scan the contents.

No becuase they will just asume that you have something worth steeling.

Which is still guessing which beats "knowing" IMHO. How many times you think I have flown with empty cans? Would love to see being ganked then. ;)

You can't hide your items from cargo scanners. Not with containers, not with plastic wraps. Cargo scanners see right through 'em these days.
