I ask this because almost every patch day the time Eve is said to originally back up is delayed.
Now most of the people like myself who have been around a while know that patch days never go as CCP predicts. As they said today it would be up at 17:00 and not coming up until.... (fill in blank)..
However there are many people who do not understand this and full the forums wondering why oh why eve is not up yet. But you still have the addicts that want it up NOW I SAY NOW!!!!
So I ask you this.
On patch day why don't you (CCP) always or most the time just state that they patch will be deployed and downtime will be 24 hours.
Now if the patch goes well and for some reason if loads well and is actually finished in 5 hours than Eve magically loads for all those of us that are addicts 19 hours earlier than expected.
Now if they patch does have problems CCP has the 19 extra hours to fix the problem and not hear everyone cry that Eve is not up yet when they said it would be :(. And tell them every hour on the hour that it will be up in an hour.
Please feel free to explain why you do not do it this way if you like.
Also I know there are a few people who did not know that today would be a patch dayà. Ahh duuuuuhhhh. Please feel free to state how you would like to be informed that there is a patch. Because obviously you can not take notice of the news on the right of your character screen right after log in. I donÆt know about you but that was the first place I saw there was a patch coming .

I've stated this before CCP doesn't seem to follow the rules on managing customer expectation.
Say 5 hours, takes 10 instead = hacked off customer
Say 10 hours, takes 5 instead = happy customer

They can't say it'll take 24 hours and then start the server 5 hours early, people would be crying over how others got an unfair start. Although it is a bit silly moving the estimated start time up one hour each hour for like five hours in a row - the only thing worse than no information at all is false information. Just say the problems are being attended to and it'll be up when it's up.

Trouble is with any code more complex than hello world it is virtually impossible to exercise every possible path through the code in a realistic time frame. So CCP, just like every other company in the software industry, has to take certain risks in deploying new variants of their software.
Managing user expectations is one of the hardest aspects of software/systems development and providing the CCP team are doing all they can to resolve the issue then they deserve our support and understanding.
I've had alot of involvement with alot less complex systems which even after 10 years of development have more issues than Eve.

Edited by: vengie on 22/08/2006 20:52:45 its like this in all games i think... and im one of those hacked of customers right now...
had time to play yesterday= game down have time now to play= game down wont have time to play later this afternoon= game will be up (finally) just the way it is in the MMOG world
and yes they should over state the down time...then they could be heros instead of jackasses...

I went through this months ago, and I doubt I was first.
Either they didn't take it on board, or Murphy decrees that whatever time they suggest will be delayed, so they should make it as short as possible

I don't think CCP should try to predict a time for when the servers will be up. They never get it right and they just get a bunch of whiners moaning on the forums about how they want their 13p back. --------------------------------------------------------------------

Id like it if they said 24 hours. These things usually take quiet a while with all the little bugs that pop up and your always gonna get those peeps checking every hour, and if it is up, they'll post on the forum for everyone to know.
People dissapoint me. End my dissapointment. |

Exactly,
thats how Scotty from Star Trek became known as a miracle worker: tell them that it'll take a day fix when it really will only take an hour or two.

Don't work that way tho.
Say 10 hours, take 5 instead = hacked off customer because I jsut spent an extra 5 hours "Quality Time"
The single rule of customer expectation is that you can never please 100% of people 100% of the time... -----

Funny, on every patch day there comes like 10x posts about why on earth the patch is not on right time, and just general whine. For you that has been playing this game for some time should allready know that a patch has never been right on time. and it doest happen any faster with all that whine

Just want to make sure I was clear in that I know that patch days I like this I'm not whining I rather find it entertaining to see all the post about the patch not being up. So I posted this because this does happen every patch and I just think CCP should maybe change the way they announce thier patches, so the forums don't get Spamed with whiners, and addicts.
I aslo thing CCP does a pretty good Job with patch days. It can't be easy try to fix stuff and 20k people are trying to get it from you and ask questions about it.
PS I expcet this post to disapear once Eve is back up and running.. IE people will forget and not care anymore

They say to set a long skill.
Personally, I set atleast a week-long skill around patch time. Ofcourse I rarely get time to log at home lately, so I end up doing that anyways.
Just train racial BS V during patch times.

Meh, been there, done that...
Just wish ccp would stop with the 'we will be back up at XX.XX hours' as we all know that is never gonna happen.
I for one would just like to see them take their time to implement and test the patch, and if that means it will take a day then so be it and let them take a day for the Makers sake but please ccp, stop with the ETA thingy cuz it's annoying, just say 'patch will take atleast 24h' and be done with it. Banner will be updated shortly |

Patch deployment on XXXX. This is a major code fix. Servers will be down longer than normal, please set long skill training. If downtime is delayed more than 24 hours, please see forums for an update. For god's sake set long skill training (at least two days).
And it should come in Evemail because not everybody has Forum Whor!ng L5 (sad, but true).
