Edited by: das licht on 23/08/2006 09:29:47 It is sounding funny. 'Eindeutschen' is the work you have to do!
VARIATIONS = VARIANTEN not ABWANDLUNGEN
while ABWANDLUNGEN isn't wrong but we wouldn't call it that way. You might even just call it MODELLE.
CARGOBAY = LADERAUM not KAPAZIT-T
CAPACITOR = ENERGIEKERN not INHALT HAUPTBATTERIE might work also
One really need some time to find the best translation.

I'll never use the German version even tho I am German. German translations just suck. Imo they aren't necessary. Everyone learns English at school anyway and the internet requires some English knowledge as well.

There was a whole big thread on the German localisation. Since I do not plan to use the German language version client (although, as I expected, it was on per default when I started EVE this morning, and had to change it back to english language), I haven't followed that thread.
But I know from my experience with localisations of english language games, that I always was wondering that they do not have one mother-tongue expert (linguists, not players) having look over it. No german native speaker would have made the translations the OP has mentioned, regarding the context of the game, only dictionaries would have.
So I'm not surprised.

I am austrian and therefore german native speaker but immediatly switched back to english. There is no purpose in translating because all the other people use the english client. If i tell my corp mates that i don`t have enough KapazitSt to move something over they will look at me funny at best. This is a waste of time that could`ve been invested somewhere else. Doing it with babelsfish maybe saved some time but you see what happenes if you do.

Well, I think they localized it to attract non-eglish speaking autrian, swiss and germans. Which isn't wrong because there are a lot who don't speak it.

I always wonder about the same phenomenon: Multi-million dollar projects, be it film or gaming or whatever industry, and they wont invest the (insert relatively small amount of money) to let a native speaker review the translation.
Best examples are always found in the film industry: One just one single sentence in the movie is spoken in "German" and its so wrong that my ears bleed (i often watch english movies in (you guessed it) english, cause i can't stand the synchronisation.
This post is not my personal opinion. It does represent the standpoint of every single player ! |

the localization version of eve WAS tested and reviewed by natives. there even was the chance to paritcipate!
the only problem is that once a team works on it some decisions have to be made in a democratic manner and that won't work ofc _________________________________ just because you are not paranoid doesn't mean i'm not following!

there has been always problems when you first played the english version and than switched to a german translation. only wanna say goldhain and schlingendorntal <g>
will stick with the english client but i think it is not really relevant for the german speaking player which already played eve but, it will attract new players which hardly speak any english at all.

I'm still not sure if CCP actually employed a professional localisation team/translator (with an idea of the game on top of their translation experience), and I somehow doubt it considering the lack of fitting translation.
Localisation isn't something you can "just do", it's something you need both professional translators and people with the actual regional background for ... and in the case of EVE, both parties need to have a good idea of the game, else it's wasted time and money.
Asking players to check out the localisation on the testserver is a good start, but the overall timeframe there was way too short for proper checking IMO. Similar concerns were stated in the official thread by several people too.

Edited by: Marcsens Lil''Helper on 23/08/2006 10:15:28 Edited by: Marcsens Lil''Helper on 23/08/2006 10:13:12 Hi,
i'm german myself and risked a look at the german version earlier today. It seems to me that it was done by people who never really played Eve themself.
CCP said they did the translation to attract more people to Eve. Thats fine for me.
But what bothers me is that they ask players to help improve the translation.
Could you please tell me why i should and would contribute my labor for free to a commercial product?

Really depends from which country you are.. Translate the notify for a wrecking hit into your language, then apply a crude dialect of your choice. Dunno how well this works in other languages, german is really flexible when it comes to local dialects

Let's not. Most (read: almost any) IT related technical terms including those used in games really don't translate well (read: at all) to my native language.
I find attempts at it highly hilarious, tho. It's comedy gold!
