Hey folks,
I was sitting here at my desk on Friday playing EVE and listening, as every Friday, to Rush Limbaugh on the radio. At the end of his program he made an announcement that has deeply affected me.
Amidst the whirlwind of rumors emanating from the National Enquirer's probe into his personal life, Rush announced to his listeners and to the world that there is truth to the stories behind his addiction to painkillers. After his unsuccessful back surgery, taking painkilling drugs hooked him and he has been addicted to them ever since. It is likely that his hearing loss is a result of the effects originating with these drugs.
His announcement that he will enter a 30-day detox facility, and Matt Drudge's later challenge to every would-be critic to "empty your pockets" before criticizing Rush, provoked some serious soul-searching on my part.
I've got an addiction - not quite the same type as being addicted to painkilling drugs, or other insidious addictions such as her0in, c0caine, or cr@ck - but nonetheless every bit as destructive.
Yes! You got it ... I am addicted to multiplayer online games, most recently EVE Online.
Since I began playing MMOGs, my "outside" life has slowly declined. For me, this addiction has consumed endless hours of time that could and should be used for far more productive ventures. Time that should be spent studying, working out, working ... and of course, socializing.
I've found myself making excuses not to go out with my friends on a Friday night in order to play EVE. My grades in law school have suffered, and my life has generally degenerated.
The worst part is that I've tried to moderate my EVE "usage," without avail. It just doesn't work. The only solution is to quit ... and quit cold turkey and for good.
MMOG's are very much the same thing as a drug, and at least for me, must be removed from my life. Game is deleted, software CD broken, books in the trash.
Just as Rush Limbaugh is entering detox, I am going to rid my life of the virus and plague that is multiplayer online gaming. So folks this last thread shall be my last contact with you, friends, who have indeed been an important part of my life for the past 4-5 months. Thank you all, goodbye and good luck!
Horribly, the truth is that based on the stories related in another thread about EVE addiction, there clearly are others in my situation . I wish you all the best ~~ and if you too have a debilitating addiction (whether it be drugs, T.V., or MMOGs), I wish you the courage to do what I am doing, when you decide to do it!
Safe travels!
Cao Cao out.
[No you can't have my stuff ... my two battleships, miner 2 lasers, 40 million isk, and all the rest of my equipment will go to the grave with my cancelled account ...]

Yup, everything becomes dangerous as soon as you loose control over it. Heck... even chocolate can become dangerous Stopped smoking 3 months ago. Was a good feeling, proving to myself that I have enough willpower to do it was great and I feel so much better now. I can breathe again, also the food tastes so much better. Only 3 months after quitting I now ask myself why I started smoking in the first place... I even refuse to sit next to someone smoking because of the bad smell.
Take care Cao, good step you¦re taking there. Don¦t let NOTHING consume your soul.

Edited by: Indira Firebrand on 13/10/2003 12:32:53 the only reason Rush finally admitted it was because he was caught flatfooted and only wants to mitigate the damage to his reputation(which in my eyes is terrible).
Had he not been caught he wouldn't be going into rehab.
Hes a biased turd that thinks "if it aint republican, its baaaad"
However i fully do understand what you mean about online games. *ITCHITCH*

I dont know the person you refered to as who inspired you to quit playing but i see your point.
I see a little of myself in you post. I should be studying, working out, working, taking care a million things that have stacked up on me since i first discovered EVE...but i dont :p
When its my time to go i imagen i will either donate my stuff to my corp or just ebay my account and get back something of the months of my life that were lost...
I can't say i know you but its sad to see someone go who is so devoted to the game.
Good luck and good speed ;)

It's the exact same things as what Zombie did, you may not attack in "safe-areas" (empire/within sentry range) without loosing your ship.

There is really nothing wrong with your addiction. It's not really harming anyone, not even you. Perhaps you think it is but you're getting so much more entertainment out of it than you do working out, socializing or whatever else you feel you're missing out. Obviously, otherwise you wouldnÆt be doing it.
They is little entertainment or pleasure in your "real-world" if you weigh the expenses and time. At the end what you have is an even a worse feeling of emptiness because these things take much more of your time, money and work. A successful person of fulfillment isn't one with money, health or assets.
You're "real-world" is a sexist, racist, bigot, ill and ugly place. Even your so-called real friends will step on you at any given chance if they think it benefits them. I donÆt think people are generally evil but this world has molded them into evil. If you've not seen this yet then you're in for a rude awakening. So why not entertain yourself in a world where you matter and can make a difference and be who you want? "After all what is real?" - That's why I never put down addicts. Drug addicts love the high they get. It's a damn shame that they can't get it out of life any other way. I donÆt blame them nearly as much as our societies.
You're feeling the pressure of society. You maybe get in a state of mind that you're unproductive and useless. That's total bull****. If you think someone else's ideas and beliefs are better for you then you've lost it man.
Take it from a fella who has went from the ghetto to upper middle-class. A time comes when you wake up and realize everything you work for and have done wasnÆt for yourself but for a status, so that maybe if others think highly of you then perhaps that would make me happy. That's how it is suppose to work. One day you wake up and are struck with fear and anxiety so bad you go into deep depression. You then have no choice but to join the billions of people on antidepressants just so you can get up every day, too hold down a great job, pay taxes and send you kids to daycare.
If you're going to freak out over your MMORPGs then wait till you get a good dose of your "Real-World!". I hope if you do free yourself up some time from dropping out of your MMORPGs that you do something constructive and really positive for yourself and not fall into the typical black hole of what everyone calls "life". - Especially watch out for your "real-world's" definition of "Love!" (Women) it will **** you over bad.
If this doesn't reach ya then go play the typical adult version "House and Make Believe." Nobody will think less of ya playing that game.

Been having similar thoughts myself lately Cao Cao. I don't think I've gone through the full cycle that you have, (only started playing 2 months ago) but I'm still spending an awful lot of time and focus on this thing. Time that I'm not using to better myself in the 'real world' out there.
Congrats on the choice and the character to follow through. Good luck.

Everyday I get up and say Im gonna do something productive but shortly end up behind the same desk playing Eve. I do agree that cold turkey is the only way. Good luck in keeping away.

I dont see the problem here.
Unless you guys are not in full time work, where do you get all the time to play EVE ?
At best I get an hour a day (at night), and a couple of hours a day at the weekends.
You guys just need to take EVE slower. Treat it like a fine wine. Do not rush, and play 24/7. If neccessary, take a week (or a month) away from EVE and then return.

I can understand this one. I work 30 hours a week and go to law school at night.
Most of my time in Eve is spent on the weekends. I usually play Saturday, but Sunday is for studying. Most weekends it works, some it doesn't.
Sorry to hear you're leaving Cao Cao but you've got your priorties in the right place --------------

Hey man, 1. Rush Limbaugh is a jerk. I'm surprised he can inspire anyone to do something positive with their lives, but there you have it.
2. I understand your addiction. And eve is very addictive. However, eve is probably the only mmorpg that you can play a few hours a day a week and not fall behind to the point of not progressing at all. That's kind of why I started playing it. My point is if you ever overcome your addiction and start going for a moderate approach (as opposed to cold turkey), then eve might not be so bad after that.
Good luck man.

Just do a search and you will find more info about him than you ever wanted to know.
But to briefly summarize: He is a U.S. radio personality who is extremely politically 'conservative'. |

Cao Cao.. Amongst the rants you made on these very boards were SOME wise and intelligent suggestions.
But as a previous poster said... take a break set a long term training off and take some time away from the game.
I am sad to see ANYONE go (except maybe that chancer56 troll.... I live in hope)

Rush Limbaugh has spent his entire career lambasting people who become addicted to drugs. As part of his job in the propaganda wing of the Republican PArty, he has repeatedly advocated imprisonment for drug addicts rather than treatment. He has railed against them for their supposed contribution to the moral decay he finds so repellent in US society. And yet for the past several years he himself has been addicted to drugs and has lost his hearing because of this. I call it poetic justice. I am outraged that he has used this admission to currry favor in the public eye by painting himself as a victim, even though he speaks loudly and at great length about how so many people are "victimizing" themselves when their problems are their own fault. Irony of ironies that he plays the victim and sees nothing wrong with it. Perhaps this episode will teach him some compassion, but I doubt it.
At least he'll be off the air for 30 days.
