I just wanted to fill you all in on my progress to date:
In exactly 53 days, I shall receive my Hulk Exhumer pilot's license. I am very excited. The problem is, I won't have anywhere near the 500 million isk at that time, which is required to buy the ship. I will fall far short, based on my present mining income. True, I shall somewhat increase that amount based on training Mining barge all the way to level 5. And depending on how much training I choose to put into drones, my income will also increase.
There's a good subject: Mining Drones.
My mentor very kindly made me a gift of many, many of these devices. I wonder if it is cost effective for me to defer getting that pilot's license in order to fully take advantage of the drones. At my present rate of training they are not really very impressive. What is the best I can expect from them, assuming I max out all the skills involved? No disrespect to my mentor but is it really worth it? It makes sense, that if I am not going to have the cash for the Hulk in 53 days, maybe I should postpone that date, and train the drone skills. Please inform...
As for the mining process itself, it's fun and relaxing, but I would need to haul in 67 loads of ore (pyro) per day, in order to earn 500 million in 53 days. I don't think I am up to that schedule. Too many variables, and mining fatique might become a factor. Even if the market held steady and the demand continued at the present rate, I know I can't do it. For one thing, that looooong, slow crawl up to the station each time causes me to bang my head on my desk. I fear I am becoming brain-damaged. "DOCK Damn you! DOCK!" ...know what I mean?
Any suggestions on how I can increase my income in short order will be most greatly appreciated.

I would say skip on the Hulk training until you're closer to being able to afford one.
If you want to maximize your mining drone useage/output you'll need the following skills at Level V:
Drones
Drone Interfacing
Mining Drone Operation
Personally I don't use mining drones, I find combat drones allow me to fight off spawns and allow me to mine longer and in more shady places.
I would reccomend training Mining Barge to Level V, get a Mining Upgrade module and train for T2 mining crystals. Once you do that, you should be able to get a pretty good income rolling in which will allow you to save up for that Hulk.

I never use mining drones on barges myself, their figures just mess up my timing and calculations. Combat drones are better in my opinion, allow you to stay out longer

LOL, get a bookmark to that station - you have heard about instajumps - you can do the same thing with stations = instadock.

That will help you a ton.
Next I endorse all above me who said not to bother with mining drones. They really aren't worth it. But if you do decide to use them sit as close to the roid they are chewing on to cut back on their traveling time. You'll get more ore.
As for joining a corp to get more money... It all depends on the corp on whether you'll get much help for personal mining. Though most any corp that you'd join would be able to help on the questions line. Then there is the teamwork and building something bigger then you can do alone you gain from being in a corp.
If you pick the right corp and jump in with both feet supporting them you'll get that low sec access and support you desire. Of course choose the wrong corp and get used and laughed at.
So like everything else in this game. Go in with your eyes open and assets covered.

Why buy a hulk? A covetor will do pretty much as well in high sec (which is obviously where you are mining). a few light combat drones is all you'll need for cover.
Best advice is - join a good corp.
Mining Pyro is daft, we've got 3rd world sweatshops for that

Because a Hulk can fit 2x Mining Upgrades as well as activate 3x modulated strip miners at once, not to mention its larger cargo capacity and 'tougher' hull ;)
Exhumers Skill Bonus: 3% better yield for Strip Miners per level and 3% reduction in Ice Harvester duration
I have Exhumers @ Level V, that alone gives me a 15% bonus per strip miner in a Hulk. Not to mention all the other goodies I've already stated... I'd say all of that makes the Hulk not so "Pretty much as good as a Covetor", It makes it considerably better!

Agree with Sventek. I luv my Hulk. The bloody thing strips belts fast. An untouched belt I can strip plag, one of the slowest high sec ores to mine, in 4 hours. And I don't use the T2 mining crystals as I find the T1 crystals good enough.
Keep working towards that Hulk you won't regret it. Though don't take it into low sec til you have enough money to replace it. As even with maxed nav skills it is amazingly slow to turn and warp. So gate camps and belt pirates will pop your pretty toy.

If you are mining in high sec space, don't bother with a hulk, it will take FOREVER to make what you put into it. Hulks are meant for 0.0 and mining crokite  With a Hulk and mining crokite you will make you isk back in about 24 hours of mining. But thats with crokite.....not tritanium
But for low sec its suicide to be mining with a hulk because of potential pirates, and its not cost effective to be mining in high sec compared to a covetor, unless you like to put 2 local hulls in the lows and afk mine every 15 minutes

Can't payoff the cost for getting a Hulk in high sec? I can mine enough to build a Raven in a day with enough left over to sell to get the low sec mins.
So 5 days to a week you can pay off the Hulk. Yes in 0.0 you can pay it off much faster assuming you don't get it blown up.

I just wanted to say thank you to all who have responded, except that one who recommended 'scamming'. Bugger off! er, sorry... back on topic.
I am listening to everything everyone is saying. I will get a Hulk for sure. It is my long term goal. But since my other long term goal is to be the best miner I can be, I now intend to slow down my march toward the Hulk, and train additional mining skills. Among these are still going to be the mining drones, and mining upgrades.
Please keep the discussion going. I find it fascinating. Oh, and thanks to dreamdancer for the link to the mining guide.

I would suggest joining a corp that will help you out or train up ice mining.
Ice mining is a bit slower than your normal mining but the rewards are quite good, me and my corp can make enough for a hulk or 2 in about 1 week if we needed.

Also, joining a corp in an alliance that has 0.0 space will also help you in getting that Hulk paid off and making profit quicker.
Not to mention that if you pick your alliance right, you will also have good PVPers watching your back, and you can use your mining drones because there's someone always to tank the spawns (or kill them) for you.
Besides, it helps to have more people around, just to have someone to chat with on TS...
