TLDR: Assigned fighters can attack targets on the undock and on gates in low sec, without aggressing the assignee, allowing him to jump or dock immediately if necessary. In addition the gate/dock guns do not fire on the aggressor.
____________________
Last night I was sat on the undock of a station in a Claymore. It was a DPS Claymore and my target was a well know pirate that had been attacking booster alts in the area with the help of assigned fighters from a Carrier on a POS.
Sure enough the pirate turns up in a Garmur. He comes right up to within scram and web range, yellow boxes me and 5 Fighters arrive on grid. The 5 fighters go red on me, but the Garmur remains yellow boxing, thus presumeably could have simple docked up if I aggressed on him.
There were no other ships on grid. My understanding is that the Carrier pilot would have got an aggression timer. But I don't understand how the fighters were ordered to attack me by the Garmur without him also getting an aggression timer. I'm absolutely certain they were assigned to the Garmur (they were repeatedly seen working with him), but without him activating an offensive mod on me, why did they attack? I'm not aware of any direct method of ordering an assigned drone or fighter to attack. Could some sort of non aggressive module like a cargo scanner have initiated the attack?
Additionally, my char (Major Trant) is flashy so I can understand why the dock guns didn't get involved. However, the booster alt previously engaged had a sec status of +5 with no criminal, suspect or limited engagement timers running and yet the dock guns didn't shoot when he was attacked either.

I don't know about the aggression mechanic on the garmur pilot - sounds a bit shakey, but one can easily command their own drones or fighters assigned to them to attack from the drone window without using any modules. Right click on the drone group and choose engage target or whatever the exact wording is. You can even bind a hotkey to do it.
I find that without a good mob to provide one for them, most people would have no mentality at all.

A hot key is what I use. I have three, one for attack, one for return and orbit, and one for return to bay.
However, I'm not sure what they did. It must be an assist thing because when you engage a target with your own drones, and just drones, you still get all the right timers. |

Well a Garmur doesn't have a drone bay, but yes you can assign a hot key to order your drones to attack. I wasn't sure that command affected assigned drones. But if it does then that would explain the exploit, cause the aggression doesn't occur until the drones actually reach and shoot the target, but in this case that aggression is given to the Carrier pilot who is out of range of the dock guns.
Definitely an exploit I would say and I have raised a petition.

First of all: good post
Some theorycrafting:
- If the carrier has set his drones to aggresive, they may attack if the assignee is attacked? Required you to have attacked the Garmur.
- Attacking with assigned drones does not cause an agressiontimer on the assignee. Which would be odd. I agree with that.
The carrier wasnt on grid and attacked you himself right?

I did not attack the Garmur, I was specifically waiting for him to red box knowing that he would just dock up if I aggressed first. The carrier pilot was definitely not on grid.

drones and fighters are slightly different with assisted drones you have no control over the drones they just tend to shoot at what you shoot at, with assigned fighters when you assign fighters they act as if they belong to the ship you assign them to that ship can then can tell them what to do and they appear on you UI as if they were your drones.
if you attack with assigned fighters they should still give you a timer as they are under your control they should also so as far as im aware give the carrier a timer as there his fighters attacking
It does sound like a bug to me and i would stick in a petition under the bugs section |
