Now as some of you know, I'm now on day 3 of the 14 day trial and I just wanted to know something real quick...
Now, I scratch enough ISK for a new ship and about 100k ISK left over to try my hand at working a couple of very profitable trade routes I discovered. Only 4 jumps between the waypoints, but one was going to take me through 0.4 space so I knew this may be a risky proposition. Nonetheless, the chance to double my ISK for maybe 20 mins worth of work was too good to pass up.
Jump gate number 3 - Yup. Sure enough, Calente Battleships waiting at the gate got me. Now when I say they "got me" I mean they WTFPNED me. Like all 8 of them opened up with gravitron bombs...lmao. I'm in a SLASHER for pete's sake.
So...a Slasher, a pod kill, and 50k ISK worth of minerals later, I'm wondering what did they get out of it and why so mercilessly? Don't get me wrong...I understand PvP as I've played on nothing but PvP servers for years now in other games. But even as a level 60+ toon on EQ or WoW, I never had the urge to completely WTFPWN a noob because I could. Ya, I've winged 'em. I intimidate them. I tell them to beat feet or get cut to ribbons. I've KSed from them if they're trying to XP in my homeland. I can make their life a living nightmare to think about coming to a party unpreparred. THEN if they don't listen or get the hint, I'll make them do a loooooong corpse run.
Perhaps I don't understand the factions well enough yet. I'm trying to read up on the races/factions/and corporations of EVE. But any light someone could shed on this would be appreciated.
Did I deserve utter anniahlation just for being there or were they just being bullies? Thank you all for making me fell welcome thus far.

They are pirates of the worst kind. They need no isk, no reason to kill you. Its just another kill to them. Real pirates would ransom you, but they know you don't have much to give, so instead they just kill you. You'll learn...
Welcome to Eve and the dark place that it can be.

The argument that real pirates prefer ransom to killing is faulty. Sure, plenty of pirates make money from ransoms, but there's isk to be made in loot too. When you engage someone in front of sentries, there is no time for ransoms. The same can be said for situations where frigates attack cruisers: you need to kill the ship before you yourself go down.
To the OP, the guys who ganked you probably didn't see the point in scanning you before engaging. Maybe it was just as efficient to blow up every ship that came their way. You're just a casualty

I would put it down to a few likely factors: - Boredom. - They did it simply because they could. - They are trying to reach the coveted -10 sec status. - They thought you were an alt carrying something valuable.
Sadly gatecamps are just a way of life, but you can do things to minimise the chances of being popped.
- Check the map for ships destroyed/pod kills in the last hour. If an orange blob appears on your map, it might be worth leaving the run for a while or for the next time you are on. - If you think there is a camp in your system, warp to a planet or moon near the gate. Then open your scanner, set the distance to 9999999 and field of view to 30 degrees and point it at the gate. See what is there, wait a minute or two and then do it again; if the same ships appear then there is a fair chance there is a camp. Again it might be worth doing the run another time. - Make instas.

Please don't misconstrue me. I wasn't complaining or even saying anything negative about the pirates being there. I knew why that route was so good. Hense, why I said that I knew it'd be risky. My question was about their motivations.
I'm not a moron. Thank you.

Instas are pre-made bookmarks that bypass the "within 15km" warp option. The instas (instant bookmarks) are made 10-15km beyond the warp-to object, making it possible to warp right on top a gate/station/whatever. Anyone can make them: go 12k behind a gate, open your "people & places" and click the "add bookmark" button. There is more to it, but those are the basics.

Oh, I see. I had already been toying with that when I discovered that when I bookmarked a location for a good mineral asteroid belt, I later discovered that the point I warped in to within 15km, put me 2000 meters from a highly profitable condensed mineral deposit.
Then I thought, "Hmmm...now this has possibilities." LMAO.
I just didn't realize they were called "instas".
Thanks again!

quite simply, you jumped into their gatecamp. now, they dont care if your a noob, a vet, or a gm. most likey, they didnt even have the chance to check (0.4 means no warp bubbles, so you have to get right on with the fighting before they decide to leave) but quite simply, anything that jumps thou in a gatecamp is is not blue, shoot it. most alliances/low sec pvp corps will operate on a NBSI (not blue shoot it- if you have a blue tag means your allied :) ). they wont make any money on you, but your still a enemy to them and you must die.
one hint, try checking the map for "most ship kills in last hour" and "most pilots in system" along your route when you go into low sec, can help.
oh, and its very funny checking jita for "most ships destroyed in last 24 hours" as well :D --------------------------

doing gate ganking usually makes more money than belt pirating
I have given up on ransom because I get more money from not asking for ransom (i do pretty fair prices) and more often than not, i get ganked by their friends, going in for a kill, grabbing the loot, then safespotting is a lot more cost efficient in a belt than asking for a ransom.
Its not an e-peen issue, finding targets that stick around in low sec can be somewhat difficult, you can go 3 hours without a kill sometimes. In comparison to camping a gate, there are a lot more targets that come through.
Ransoming at a gate is something you will rarely find just because it is more efficient to just kill everything that comes through and hope for something juicy.

Just remember when this happens - it isn't personal, they just either lack real PVP skill or really need isk very, very badly.
Welcome to EVE - sent you a small welcome present. Nothing too much, or that just spoils things.
Advice for the future? Find a corp, and get into 0.0 as soon as you can. Its more than possible to effectively PVP and make money in 0.0 with just 2m or so SP's. --------

There's also this. Real pirates will shoot down everything that moves, doesnt matter if it's beta player or 3 hour noob. You could have been an alt carrying a small fortune to his main for all they know (just a few days ago someone got a 1.5bil CNR bpo from a shuttle).
And since there's no way they could have locked you down, scan you and offer you a ransom, they just blew you up and hoped you're gonna drop some good loot. 99.9% it's crap but every once in a while they hit a jackpot and that makes it worth it.

This is good, this is the type of people we WANT in the game, and the types we want to keep.
He didn't cry, quit, whine, smacktalk in local etc.
It was a fair question, it's only the first page but I'm also happy to see the responses so far, no flames :D
Well, salute to you, I myself lost my hauler tonight with all my important t2/faction gear etc. I was furious at first, but then I remembered it doesn't mean ****, it's just fake money in a video game, if more people realized that, we could all kill each other happily . I'm not an alt, I am just going solo for a little while. |

0.4 systems 30 minute aggro timer for sentries (might make em be a bit mre target selective) oh and sentry guns do as much dmg up close as they do long range (would still allow pirates to operate) but make them more selective in their targets
0.3 - 24 minute aggro tiemr 0.2 - 18 minue aggro timer 0.1 - 12 minute aggro timer
Killrights if youre attacked
0.4 = 60 days 0.3 = 50 days 0.2 = 40 days 0.1 = 30 days
Would add some variance depending on sec status of the system
