Edited by: CharveL on 26/08/2006 05:56:36 Edited by: CharveL on 26/08/2006 05:56:02 First of all, sorry if this is already mentioned somewhere as I haven't been around the forum much but I thought I might be able to let you know about a very cool feature CCP has seen fit to add value to Eve.
As a relatively new player I come from more of a flight simming gaming background, at least over the past few years, and also have the good fortune to be on the beta team for NaturalPoint the developers of TrackIR. So you can imagine my delight when, after this latest patch I happened to notice the option to enable TrackIR in the menus as perhaps many of you have and wonder exactly what it does or what it's for.
In short for those of you who don't know, TrackIR is a clever piece of kit that lets you move your in-game viewpoint naturally by simply moving your head to look around instead of your mouse. This lends itself ideally to in-cockpit flight sims and racing games but more and more of late also is finding cool and innovative uses in non-traditional games. The more recent versions of TrackIR allow more than pitch and yaw (head swivelling up/down, left right) movements but also zooming in and out, side to side, up and down, and head tilting using some clever maths and surprisingly powerful hardware. This aspect is referred to as 6DOF or Six Degrees of Freedom. For more details go here:
www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/
Now for those that already know this stuff and enabled the function in Eve only to find it wasn't working you'll be happy to know that the TIR game profile has just been released so it's just a matter of updating your game profiles. :)
The Eve implementation actually turned out very well in that it wasn't put to use as an alternative control method or mouse replacement which although it sounds neat in a way would actually be pretty sloppy and annoying, especially in 3rd person. Instead, it is used as a viewing augmentation for looking off center up to about 90 degrees in any direction as well as zooming in and out by leaning closer/further from the monitor, etc.
In effect you'll still be using the mouse as always but perhaps a bit less so which can translate into a few less accidental mouse clicks and perhaps a brief reprieve from that carpal tunnel onset. ;)
I suggest also tweaking your TIR profile to suit your own playing style although the default works fine and I also want to thank CCP for being as innovative as they have been and adding value to this game.
cheers!

Although in a technical sense the kit looks excellent, I don't see how it's actually useful as a UI device in Eve, 3rd person, at all.

Don't you normally turn your head to look at objects behind you? But there's no screen behind you...
I was looking at the "Flying" implications, "wow, finally I can look up to see who's behind me instead of hat-panning, oh wait if I look behind me I see the door to my room..."
I'm curious as to how it would be useful in eve, though, since most of the action is focused on the ship itself.

Exactly. These devices can cause nausea in flight simulations as well because of the latency between head movement and view movement.

My guess is that it works like when you click and hold the right mouse button anywhere in space to tilt the view and use the left mouse button to zoom in and out. With this device you can use the mouse for the GUI and look around at the same time by just turning your head a little bit. As the website sates: "Your head movement is amplified!" so you don't need to turn your head 90¦ to see what's going on around your ship.
I think this could be kinda cool and cheaper than using 3 monitors. (Which is also possible with Matrox' "TripleHead2Go")

Probably for the same reason they didn't mention many other things.

Not sure if one of these things would be useful or not, after all, if you turn your head, you still have to have your eyes on screen infront.
Maybe better if your running a triple monitor flight sim setup, but pretty pointless if you only have a single monitor I feel.
Eve is like a new girlfriend - you know its going down at some point, its just when and for how long. |

I've a track IR I used for flight sims and World War Two Online. I have used it extensively in both.
To those speculating about the performance, usefulness, and nausea inducement. Sorry, you are mostly wrong.
The TrackIR is a nifty bit of kit and while it will not replace your normal peripherals it will enhance them.

should I point out that nausea is an individual thing, and can affect people differently. The Unreal and Quake/Doom series of games, for instance, could leave me throwing up within an hour through motion sickness...

Is it just me or does TrackIR have some limitations in EVE? For examble I can only turn the camera to about 30* and then it stops, no matter how far I turn my head. I also find the zooming abit wierd, its standard posistion is way to far from the ship. Of course you can fix this my movie you head away from the screen and reseting TrackIR, so when you move you head back towards the screen you zoom in.
Though I wonder if EVE really need TrackIR, it is fun but I tend to want to control all camera movement with my head so I have my mouse open for all the other things :P

If you used it as a mouse replacement, yes. It's not meant as a mouse replacement in FPS type games for moving your body but simply for normal head, and perhaps torso movement.
Imagine running up to a corner with bad guys waiting and instead of skidding out full body for a look, all you do is tilt your head for a peek. :)
As for looking behind you don't worry the device would not work if someone hadn't thought of that. :D The farthest from the center of your monitor you have to look is the edge of it since the software extrapolates your movement according to a sensitivity profile that you choose or tweak to your needs. A sensitivity deadzone can also be set up so that you don't have to sit absolutely still.
The TIR has been around for quite some time now and used by the flight-sim, and more recently other genres so it's been through it's teething pains and continually improving.
For Eve it certainly isn't a make or break during your next PvP but a welcome enhancement and convenience for those so inclined to make it work for them.
Thanks again CCP!

Silly me, thinking that option was the result of a drunk dev with bad spelling skills. Hey, I've never heard of this device, what do you expect me to think of words like "Trackir?"
