The first time I heard this was when I was in PA some time back, maybe early to mid 2005. After PA split I was in Huzzah, Ghosts and then LV, all of them used this "X for gang" too.
So, did any one alliance/corp/player start this or is it something that's been done since the game began? If it's the latter then I certainly did well to miss it for half of my time in EVE  .
What's your earliest recollection of this phrase and what alliance/corp were you in?

Usually we use a dot such or a dot followed by a system/gang name such as

seeing . gang spammed in allaince channels day in day out makes my blood boil.
why not be normal and say 'please can i get a gang?'

Yes it was "." a long time ago and ppl switched to an "x" when the font changed.
