Hello
Is there any point in training frigate skills for solo pvp. Or should i go straight for cruiser size? I've tried roaming a little and very rarely do i find something even wort engaging in a tech 1 frigate.
Thanks

Yes however this will be mostly for faction warfare type of things. Interceptors, assault frigates and electronic frigates are heavily used aswell in null alliances. |

It is frustrating finding a 'gf' anymore isn't it?
I think it's worth it, are you hunting in lowsec FW areas? It's a mixed bag flying around, the solo pilot is always fighting uphill against the blobs, the links. Every now and then you will find another honor warrior.
I would think you'd find the same thing if you went straight to Cruiser.. I suppose that you could train for that skipping the Frigates. I'd suggest not doing that unless you're already pretty familiar with the game. Just because Frigates and Destroyers are so much cheaper.
Sometimes you gotta go to places like Adirain where the Black Rebel Rifter Club is, they will gladly offer frigate 1v1's. Same with Stay Frosty and the Bastards up in Ishomilken and the Tuskers in Hevrice and Prism. |

You can get a ton of frigate fighs in FW space. I highly recommend it. Cruisers are much harder to bring through there solo as they are less agile and susceptible to being caught on gates. However they can sometimes work well in quieter areas of low/null. One of the major things to think about when solo is your agility. You need to be able to avoid getting blobbed as much as possible. The larger the ship, the harder that is.
IMO get enough skills to fly a couple frigate class ships and then focus heavily on your support skills which effect both frigs and cruisers (gunnery, tank, navigation, engineering, etc.) Then you can dabble in both cruisers and frigates and have pretty decent skills. When you know what you like you can invest further in size specific skills (frigate/cruiser 5, medium weapons 5, etc). Don't forget that you can buy several frigates for the price of a cruiser so if you are very new to pvp it's a much cheaper way to learn!

Here in EVE, when we say 'solo' it means you have a remote repping alt and a booster alt helping out your mighty fighting frigate main.
If you mean a single acct frigate fighter with no alt back up, then you will be frustrated by all the other solo players that use the above definition of solo.
Just a heads up.

T1 frigates won't last you forever, but T2s play a big role in PvP and use many of the same gun, module, and ship skills as T1s.
Also, T1s are cheap. Better than a cruiser if you don't plan on winning much. |

if you want to solo pvp you need offgrid boosts.
you need to also skill a garmur or orthus and invest into high grade snake sets and deadspace fits.
Then you will have to make a youtube video with dubstep.mp3 to show how awesome you are at "solo" pvp
A less sarcastic point :
yes...
join FW and do novice plexes. you will get ****** by boosted worms and garmurs a lot but there is a gf here and there.

It depends where you are looking for a fight.
If you are in FW space, frigates are heavily used and thus you should be able to find a target you can butt heads with. Just make sure you are using the FW complexes that are limited to frigates, so you know you will be up against other frigates.
Just because you have a cruiser doesn't mean you will find more fights. Those that can not take you on, will just run away from you. Those that easily can take you on, will still murder you...
Also, a T1 frigate with a proper fit can take on things MUCH bigger then it's own size.

You don't need big ships, you don't need expensive ships, you don't need T2 ships. What you need is an understanding of how stuff really works (most people have no real clue, however much they might pose or pvp a lot). There's various solutions to problems and situations; "more" is what most people will come up with, more people, more dps, more cost. But it's not needed generally. What you really need is "smarter" but since that's generally in short supply people opt for "more" and then brag about how awesome it is, and they are. The trick is to understand the different tactics, ships, fittings, capabilities of ships with specific fittings and then you need to understand what and how to counter, using which tactic of your own.
As an example: A humble T1 frigate (and actually one you get for free from the tutorials) is easily capable of killing most T2 Assault frigates and even T1 cruisers, the trick is to know which to avoid and if you'd catch one how to handle and counter it. It's not as difficult as it may sound (it's actually fairly logical) but it does require the knowledge and insight to MAKE it logical, and doable.
You can go larger and more expensive so If you enjoy that more then go for it, but you don't HAVE to. You can also opt the more difficult route of actually BEING better than flying better ships and at some point, if you were capable/willing to learn and improve, you can then combine being better AND flying better ships.

Be aware that frig fights are fast paced and if you have less/no experience in PvP and EVE mechanics it is hard to learn from frig fights without help. Frapsing your fights helps a lot to understand what was going on.
Check this vid, it is an example of excellent frig kiting PvP. You won't get to that level without a lot of training, trying and dieing but it shows how it can be. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=384647&find=unread

that's all i fly op,given that im also a noob.
just to share my experience, i like being solo also, in other mmo that i played i pretty much do things on my own .
EvE changed that, you won't truly enjoy this game if you don't have some internet-friends to play it with. PVE here suckballs and you'll be bored really fast. i'm not saying don't solo, just don't concentrate in it. find a good corp and you'll have a blast.
good luck.

Thing is that for true solo PvP you need a few things a) all V boosters and over heating skills b) lot's of personal skills c) the right kind of gang of muppets that can't get you killed even 5 vs 1 as evidenced here though I doubt it is for the lack of trying on that video. |

Ooh and to make 1 thing very clear:
Solo PvP =
YOU are solo, there is NO guarantee that the other party is solo either. He can have friends on stand-by or just alts....

This is so true.
I remember what would have been my first impressive solo kill a couple years back. I was flying around suspect flagged in a Vexor and managed to get a Loki to engage. I have them into high structure (and am in control of the engagement, at my optimal range, with 40% armor, a lot of capacitor, and all drones alive) when their three friends land on grid. Gulp.
I pop with the Loki at about 30% structure.
For what it is worth, this is why I personally favor ships that can finish a fight quickly over frigates in PVP when I am solo and cannot escalate, with the Vexor being my favorite ship. Other people will disagree with me here.

Ganking doesn't need a purpose, the gank is its own purpose.

Thanks for answers. Lots of pros and cons to both frigs and cruisers it seems. I guess dying as slow as possible so i might learn something is the place to start.

Apart from FW plexing that controls the literal size of your opponent's ships a la World of Warcraft with it's battlegrounds keeping people from too high a level from stomping on your low level, there's really not much value for T1 frigs, or really any T1 ships "in the wild".
It should be, but it simply isn't. T2/3 cruiser is the meta and will continue to be because its simply better ships for fighting outside of FW. I even see gatecamps on stations in FW by T3 ships with instalock popping people in frigs all day for lulz. I see HACs and T3 gate camping as well doing the same thing in FW.
T2 and T3 are strictly better by stats alone, before extra bonuses for damage get thrown in there. That's why battleships and BCs are considered obsolete by most players. T1 frigs, definitely. I trained T1 frigs exclusively believing I could be an asset, but unless you're going right into stealth bombers or interceptors, or you train for a lot of bigger ships too, it's a dead end career choice.

And first point essentially means that if you aren't fully trained and with T2 guns at minimum, you're worthless/dead unless the other side is SO bad at point b.
At 5 drones of T2, the Tristan is nearly as powerful as the Algos, with a cheaper price tag, better maneuverability and speed, and smaller sig radius to avoid the lazy carebearish T3 station blapping -10s who have no life. Pick tristan for FW.
