I can't wait until this type of product becomes cheap enough to produce that it becomes mainstream.

Thats great, so we can throw away the 70s style keyboards and mice and get a REAL interface from the 21st century for our computers.
Its about time, todays computer technology is so damn powerful and we still use an input device derived from the typewriter, developed in victorian times

THE LAST THING on earth that I would want would be to be on an open space floor while dictating my 150th e-mail for the day with about 50 other people doing the same next to me. It's enough they speak on the phone, thank you very much!

You are right, sometimes blind addiction to high-tech goes to far, this would be like inside a borg cube, voices of your neighbouring working drones, eh work mates, in your head

I don't see why everyone's so up in arms about this tbh. It looks like all he's using is some fancy-looking software and google earth.
And then just mapped certain mouse clicks/movements to finger presses on a touch screen... It's nice, but imo it's hardly Minority report..
No if you could do all that without actually touching it, that would be VERY cool...

Tbh I'd never use it. He needs to stand and use both hand to zoom map. I do it sitting comfy, with one hand, while the other hand is holding beer can.
ergo: mouse > flashy silly interface.

I'd like that interface tbh, cept instead of flat like a table, I'd like it as a screen I can reach up and down comfortably in my chair.
heck, maybe I can use my feet as well XDD -
want a sig like mine? 5m!

I don't see what's so impressive about it, even less how it could be used in applications which aren't about watching bouncy things. :|

Well, I have to agree it's not 100% suitable for every application, but for most things that currently require a mouse, this is something to drool over.
Possible uses I can think of right away:
- 2D graphics
- 3D modeling
- games (not all of them, but EVE could certainly benefit because of it's ship camera)
- music
- video
- any work that requires a lot of multi tasking (the "infinite desktop" over which you can spread your applications and work on them without losing so much time moving the mouse down, clicking through the many applications you have open, moving the mouse back up to where this new application requires it)
Hell, even for my work this is suitable.
OK, so it's not necessarily for lazy people who only use a mouse for whatever they do on a computer, but even using one hand could be possible, it's all a matter of defining gestures for what you want.
Now I'll wait for the computer powered by pedaling on a bicycle, or the 3D simulator that allows you to walk around on a treadmill-like thing and play, and I'll retire from the world completly :P

I think the whole idea is brilliant tbh. Although it may not be as useful as the good old mouse and keyboard though.

Getting multiple simultaneous inputs from a touchscreen was a huge hurtle derived from how the technology worked, and this is an amazing leap forward, I've used something similar to this, and it's just about the easist way use, well, anything. It's at least five years from market though, for several reasons.
1. Size. Something like that really doesn't work unless you have a screen that big to manipulate with, and you can't just plop that down in the kitchen to work on while you cook dinner and watch whatever animal or police inspired parade of violence that's on FOX, it's about as easy to move as a large TV(Read: Not)
2. Bulk. It will require a lot of space. even if they make is a flat-panel. The most comfortable way to use this thing is when it's flat on the table, but it's incredibly irritating to look at this way, so a reflective is needed to set up to maximize hand comfort and ease of use. You could rake the screen and take away the reflective and reduce it's size, but you'd be sacrifice a little bit of both hand and head comfort over the flat-with-a-reflective variant.
3. Price. That stuff is expensive to build just the inputs for, and to top it off you need a giant LCD panel to use to manipulate it with.
The best solution I can see for all of this would be at the introduction of commercial, long-life OLEDs, which would enable you to fold the whole thing up as well as make it cheap
