I run EVE on 1280 x 1024 screen size, so my fraps saves it at half size of 640 x 512. Except when I try to save it through Windows Movie Maker it ends up being saved as 640x480, resulting in the footage being made 'wider' than it should be, lowering the overall quality of the video.
I've seen DrunkenOne's Jaegerbomb Part 1 video where he somewhat 'fixed' the problem of the footage being made wider than it should be, but I have yet to find a way to get around it.
Any ideas? -------------------------------

Edited by: Osiris Occido on 29/08/2006 18:17:03 Hey Leon, yah that's WMM's initial shortcoming is that they only give you limited pre-packaged options for rendering your video. In order to get around the issue, you have to follow these steps:
1) Download and install Windows Media Encoder 9 Series.
2) Create your profile. This utility will give you a program found under Start > Programs > Windows Media > Utilities > Windows Media Profile Editor. You use this program to build a custom 'profile' for Windows Movie Maker, so you completely control bit rates, keyframe, resolution, fps, audio/video codecs, etc.
3) Save your profile. When you finish creating the profile, you save it under C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\shared\profiles. If WMM is open, save your project, close WMM and reopen it.
4) Compile your video. Now when you go to File > Save Movie, pick the 'Other Options' (the same place where you saw the other rendering options) and you'll see your new profile available for selection. The video will then compile based on your profile configuration.
// I spent a lot of hours finding the best combination of quality and filesize and have hit my sweetspot afaiac. Here is the template of my current profile:
Audio Mode: CBR Codec: WMA 9.2
Video Mode: Quality VBR Codec: WMV 8
Quality-based Settings: Audio Format: 128kbps, 48kHz, stereo CBR Video Size: 1152x864 Frame Rate: 25 Video Quality: 90 (on a quality-based profile, this essentially drives the bitrate) Key frame interval: 3 secs

Windows Movie Maker is horrible when it comes to encoding, at least stock anyway. After downloading the Vegas 6.0 trial and making Turbulance with it (go watch it btw :P), which is rendered at 640x512 (same size as footage) I really couldnt stand to use WMM ever again.
one nifty feature about Vegas is it lets you set the resolution yourself, which I had to do as there were no presets for that resolution. im sure other decent video editing suites have similar options, maybe try some :)

Even though this is an Old post, I spent several days trying to come up of a solution to movie making and the horrible resolutions that you have to choose from. Osiris has offered the only solution so far to me searching all over then net, and it turns windows movie maker from being a pile of garbage to a great way of making movies for EVE or any other game. So here is a bump for anyone else who has been searching for a way to increase the quality of WMM.

Might be one of the major issues of WMM solved, but it's still a very limited program (not to mention buggy) program.
