caldari is best for mining as their towers have the most cpu, most cost effective size is the smallest needed for what you want to do.

Gallente would be the best, if their bonus to silo size wasn't still bugged. Do not use a Gallente tower for moon mining or reactions as your precious materials will vanish from the silos at dt.
Any small tower will do if you want to mine a single mineral and defence isn't a major concern. A tower that runs off local ice products may be easiest to fuel but check prices and availability for your region first.
If you want to run a simple reaction then a medium or large will do, other than an Amarr medium. For a complex reaction you need a large tower (or a Caldari medium with coupling arrays that get emptied every three hours).
The item info on the market tells you how much fuel they use. Each race is the same, bar isotope type. You could also use the 28 day spreadsheet. The most important thing to remember with a production tower is to minimise your time spent tending the tower. The less time you waste, the higher your profit. Margins on moon mining are slim and if you spend too much time looking after it you would be better off doing something else. |

are you saying no matter what, even if the silo isnt full the silos will empty at downtime?

Single Resource Mining: Any small, Amarr and Gal have Boni (although, someone earlier stated one was bugged, don't know if thats true)
Dual (or even Tri) resource mining: MED Amarr can handel 2 miners and silos, The rest should be able to hold 3 miners and silos,. You probally won't find a moon with more than 2 or 3 minerals in it. If you do, Don't tell anyone :)
For Reprocessing, Med or large is required (large for advanced, med for simple). I'd go with at least minmintar, as you can (IIRC) fit a moon miner, silo, and med refinery on their med tower. Good way to secure a better moon as well.

The tower gives a bonus to silo size which gets reset at dt so some of the silo contents may disappear.
However, I spoke with a bit too much certainty. It's a well-known bug but I haven't experienced it personally. Since the devs don't seem to be able to find what's causing the bug, it could also be fixed without them knowing and thus neither would we.
On the day the Gallente towers are fixed every tower running complex reactions will be switched to a Gallente tower and the pos owner will finally have two or even three whole days off without having to empty a silo. |

Just use:
Reactor -> Silo -> Silo -> Silo
Now you have several days without having to empty a silo.

I had wondered if that worked but sadly have been unable to try as my pos are full of silly offensive and defensive modules instead of beautiful production modules. |

Yes, it works perfectly. All the materials flow to the Silo on the end. When it fills up, the silo in the middle captures all the materials and when it fills up the first silo capures all the materials.
