I have always liked multi-player games and have played many like EQ,DAOC,EQ2,SWG,PS,etc. I heard about EVE on a car forum when a CNN story was posted about the big EVE bank scam.I may be a wacko but it intriged me to read about the game. I just signed up for a month because of how wide open it seems to be.I like the freedom the game seems to offer.
Right now I am overwhemed with how everything works. I am reading a lot but it's much different than what I'm used to (find bad guy,hit "A", kill bad guy,get XP). So this is my offical hello thread and I'm sure I'll be back to ask question as they come.
Do Corps usually use teamspeak or is text the main way they talk to each other? When just starting out and learning the ropes should I focus on combat, mining, or trading? or doesnt it really matter?

Hi and welcome to Eve, many corps use teamspeak or something similar, some require you to have it (mainly combat corps) there isn't really any best profession to start with go with what you like the idea of, if it doesnt work out then go to something else hope you enjoy it out there, Haema

\0/ welcome, you are now doomed to never leave muhahahah
Eve isn't like other games - this is a violent love/hate relationship, not a cosy marriage. If you are still here in 3 months then you are truly caught.
Pull up a comfy seat, and expect to have it whipped away as you sit down

heya, welcome. Expect to be overwhelmed by the interface and the stupid amount of things you need to learn about, the learning curve is beyond steep tbh. Also understand that everything you do will reflect on your character, and that doing things the wrong way will cost you. It's in your best interest to learn from your mistakes as quickly as possible and think before you do anything that might jeopardise your ship and pod.
There's no set classes, you can be everything at the same time, be sure to ask if you have questions.

welcome! if you have questions, post them here, there will be no shortage of answers :)
as to your question about focus - do what you feel like doing, and remember that there are no classes as such, so you can try anything and everything until you figure out what you want to do "full-time"
my advice would be to skip trading for a little while and get to grips with combat (more intricate than it first seems) and perhaps a foray or two into mining - once you've gotten a taste of each, try something new, or continue to focus on what you find you like the most
enjoy, enjoy, enjoy :)

Welcome to EVE! I'm fairly new too and believe me, it's nothing like any MMO I have ever played before. The learning curve is indeed steep but that's a good thing. The community is a more mature crowd and I have found to be most helpful. You will find yourself truly addicted in no time. I hope you enjoy it and if I can help you in any way, feel free to look me up and message me in game

Just remember, if you're not having fun, then you're doing something wrong imo .
Most corps use TS and many have a mic as a pre-req for membership (mainly combat like the above poster mentioned), used primarily for combat and occaisonally for mining. Most characters do carebear activities at first while they're young and vulnerable, but then switch over to combat as their skills and characters mature, although there are certainly lots of exceptions to that rule of thumb.
