How do I know what the optimal lvl of ME is for a paticular item?
I spent some time and learned Production Effeciency to lvl 5. I figured this would help me out in the production of various modules and ships.
I understand that there is a waste factor involved in building anything, and different things have different ratios.
What I don't understand is why I look at the mineral requirments on the BPO and it says I am perfect, yet when I install the BPO in the factory it show tons of waste.

PE is pretty much the same. And I think it might even get discussed in that thread.
Just read your post more carefully. Yeah. PE is definately discussed in that thread. I thought you were referring to PE research, which is just a little different from PE Skill. :)

Your PE Skill effects your waste. At PE5 you are no creating any waste when making an item.
The second Factor is the ME of the BPO itself. If a BPO uses 1000u of trit, 500u pyr and 100u mex to manufacture said item then the waste from using an unexperimented BPO would be 100u trit, 50u pyr and 10u mex as the BPO has a std waste factor of .1. If you experiment the BPO to an ME of 9 then the waste factor decreases to .01 and now the BPO, not you, wastes 10u trit, 5u pyr and 1u mex. Taking the BPO to ME 99 you cause the waste factor to become a .001 this makes the BPO was 1u trit, 1u pyr and depending on rounding 1 or 0 units of mex.
This is the basic math behind waste factors and why you still waste materials with PE5. If you didn't have PE5 then there would also be a "You" wastage factor as well.
