Ok, so I took a look at one of the pirate tutorials. I'm a relatively new character with 900k skill points. I run around in a Caracal (but have the skills for a Ferox or even a Raven, but have been told not to go there as I'll get toasted) with all missiles. I also have a Microwarp drive and a Warp Disruptor I.
Seems to me as thought I'd be better off with the Ferox/Raven for more firepower / shields. Are they really that much slower with their MWDs fitted?
So I guess I'm curious. Am I ready? Am I about to get toasted? Should I be carrying some kind of sensor disruptor to protect myself from a more experienced pirate showing up and pounding me?
Input / advice appreciated,
Thanks,
N

You are ready to be a pirate in all but one critical respect. You are flying caldari.
They really aren't hawt for piracy (except empire gatecamping). Minmatar or Gallente are great for belt piracy, and you will have much more luck by spending a week or two skilling into the vexor, thorax or rupture.

Don't underestimate how much pirate fun you can have with a Caracal. I've seen one in particular do some interesting things down in Domain back when I was in Huzzah. I've lost an Ishkur and an Enyo to a Caracal... so don't look down on them.
The Ferox and Raven? Those things are death traps without a lot of skillpoints. Don't get in them. "Raven on scanner!" "Where! We got to get it!", you're a target that will be sought after by all levels of players and the killboards don't show how old you are, just that you lost a Battleship/Battlecruiser. And, it's probable you really can't put out that much more damage than a T2 fitted Caracal in a Raven with 900k of SPs.
Start small, accept a lot of losses and learn from them while progressing naturally.
Oh, Caldari Assault Frigates are nice. The Hawk and Harpy will probably see more flight time than your Raven/Ferox will should you strive to get one.

I disagree. My other character is a 23million SP caldari specialist, and in many ways, awesome. In some ways (javelin torps) even overpowered. In some ways (mass, nighthawk, moa, merlin), caldari are horrible. For small gangs, and mid range engagements, caldari are totally awesome
For piracy, caldari lose. Piracy either takes place at close range (inside scramble range, using blasters/AC/pulse) or at extreme long range (sniping). It also requires speed/agility to tackle your target (except in some specific cases, like the pilgrim) and plenty of midslots spare for tackling (oops, my tank goes there!).

While Caldari ships may not be ideal for solitary belt piracy or gate camping, they excel in gangs. This may not be your style, but it is an unfortunate truth.

The day that you can look at your frigate or cruiser, floating in a suspension field inside a space station, and think, "I'm going to lose this in about 20 minutes, and then 3 more just like it, but I'm going to have a ballsload of fun doing it and might come out making a profit if I'm lucky" and be pleased with that thought, you're ready to be a pirate. ------------------------------------ I like long walks, a good book before bed, and human entrails served cold with a side order of scrap metal. |

Edited by: AltTastic on 01/09/2006 14:52:43 Caldari might not be all that great for piracy, but there are cases where they can be..
1. Caracal works if you can get in range to scramble
2. Ferox is by definition a gunboat (not that anyone uses it that way), just look at its BC skill bonuses. That range can come in handy. :)
3. In a gang, a well skilled raven pilot can be your worst nightmare. If they've got a good tackler who can keep you from locking them (sensor damp/ecm/whatever), you suddenly find yourself with over 30 cruise missiles heading towards you, all from over 200km away (by the time the 1st one hits you, there could be 10-30 missiles in the 'stream' depending on launchers/skills). I dunno about you, but unless I'm in a well-tanked BC or better, I'd be very afraid. While an turret setup might be quicker for the kill, nothing beats the anticipation that target has while waiting for his inevitable demise, and being able to visually see what's in store. :)

False, any ship can be used for pirating, it is how u are trained for it. In my career in EVE, caldari to me has been the most dominated pvp race overall, but that is just my perspective.

I have lost 2 haulers in low sec. Losing the first Badger to a Domi Sniper using 425mm Rails at 170km was over fast and left a bad taste in my mouth. I was dead before I was able to warp out, no fear at all.
Losing the 2nd badger to a Raven firing CMs from 200km out scared the crap outa me. I wasn't paying attention and by the time I noticed I was locked, I saw the stream of CMs heading to me and I freaked out I couldnt hit my Auto Pilot button. Seeing the light orange glow of 10 CMs makes your heart beat fast, knowing it's gonna end in flames!
Kinda like that video of the Scorp being taken out by the Phoenix. The Scropian Pilot sees that Citidal Torp coming and knows hes done for!
My point is Caldari can make great snipers and Pirates, but not as good a someone in a Blasterthron. ------------------------------------- Sammael's Legion ARCH |

I'm not a pirate but a few words of advice if you're going for belt piracy. First, chose your targets right. The race/ship discussion is redundant if you don't know how to chose your targets. Secondly, work on your security standing (e.g. do missions) because it's a lot easier to pirate without a bounty and -10 (i.e. the targets stay put when you enter local). Thirdly, think outside the box when it comes to fitting. Unless you're taking on miners you're likely to get eaten alive with anything that resembles a 'standard' fitting if you PvP older players. Try to be as unpredictable as possible.

Don't wory about caldari missile boats for pirating, they hold up pretty well. The number of times i've been nailed either warping into a belt or into 0.0 from empire by caracals or ravens is causing me to be a little dischuffed. Start in the caracal or even with a squadron of kessies to get yourself used to selecting targets, then move into a ferrox.

if you die, repeat same until you learn some tactics that work.
you were ready the day you could fly a fully functioning frigate.
