I am just starting out on the lvl 3 mission in my Minamatar battle cruiser and would like to know the best setups for tanking, would you go for armour or shields for these mission I have looked through the setups section but all the setups always seem to be set up for ratting in low security zones.
I donĘt want to discuss which is better just to find out what has worked for people, I have tried various setups myself but never seem be able to tank long enough to survive even on the easy lvl3 missions.

I'm not a minmatar pilot but if you're using the cyclone I would shield tank it with pdu's, dmg mod and maybe a damage controle unit in the low slots.

This is not because shield vs armortanking but because you are using a cruiser. Unless you are fairly high skilled using a cruiser is not a good idea for lvl3s. Get a cyclone (and, there, shieldtank).

Wow, a couple of dud responses ^^^.
With a Cyclone, a good shield tank is reachable. It is not a cruiser. It's a battle cruiser. You want to shield tank it, since the ship has a bonus to shield boost amount. A shield boost amp also helps due to the multiplicatory properties of bonuses.
Tank could look like this:
Med-boost amp, large booster (best one you can get and use), appropriate hardeners for each NPC type x 3.
Low-One damage control, bunch of PDS.
For your purposes, a good damage control is probably overkill, since it would add a bunch to the price tag. The plain one, or the Emergency DC would be good enough.
Blood Raiders are going to be your biggest problem since you have a native resist of 0% EM. Message me or evemail me in-game if you want more specific help.

Edited by: Vari Lokai on 02/09/2006 06:55:31 I run level III's in cyclone setup for range:
2 720mm prototype siege artillery 1 220mm gallum ac 1 medium nos 1 tractor beam 3 XR-3200 heavy launchers
1 T2 AB 1 T2 Large shield boost 1 Eutectic cap recharger 1 V-m15 braced mutlispectral shield matrix (if mission proves difficult can swap to specific dmg hardener) 1 fleeting web
1 ballistic control system (another power diag if your cap needs help) 1 power diagnostic 1 f85 damage control unit 1 type-D signal amplifier
Pack 4 lights and 2 medium drones types depending on rats. always adjust my ammo to the mission as well.
Have upgraded several modules and weapons over time as I can afford started out with mostly non named and worked my way up. Also started with medium shield boosters and as I skilled up have the current t2 large.
With this setup and my current skills I can start popping rats around 60km. I haven't had any scary situations except that one mission where it throws you into a box of 4 sentry guns. I had 3 arty guns but if a web drone gets close to me it took longer than I liked to kill them with just drones so the one ac helps that.
If you fly away from the group your fighting without AB you will maintain approx 30-40km range. Smaller tackling targets like drones and frigs pop them first so they dont get in range and web you. I very rarely need to run my shield booster non stop a pulse here and there is usally good enough.

Im new to cyclone as mostly I fly frigates...
But Ive done most lvl 3 missions with:
5x 650 arties, 3x assault missile launchers 10mn AB, large shield extender, large shield booster, 2x active hardeners nano, gyrostab, pdu, whatever... (maybe a small armour repper for when the damage spills over)
8 light drones
Rat specific ammo...

Personally I can't be bothered hauling different hardners around to my various agents and refitting every mission. I went for the monster tank on my Cyclone and it works beautifully. I can solo all L3s in it without warping, though some cut it a bit close, like 2nd room of Downing the Slavers. Mordus Headhunters takes a few trips the odd time I accidentally aggro all the groups at once, but usually no such problem if you're carefull with your first shot and drones.
I use a large shield booster II and 3x large shield extender IIs, and 2 or 4 PDS IIs depending whether I'm using my 650mm or 720mm (2 RCUs instead of the all PDS as the 720s need more grid). Y-S8 AB in the remaining mid slot. Drones and standard or assualt launchers so that both your missiles and drones can work on eliminating frigates fast while still making noticeable contributions against the bigger ships.
With 2 PDS and the bigger guns I'm still over 12k shield HP, closer to 15k with the 650s and 4 PDS and gang skills. Factor in the AB usually being off and that's a lot of shield boosting, remember the Cyclones BC skill bonus is per level Sometimes I feel I should be doing L4s in it as my passive recharge is enough for most L3s.
