The above statement is no longer true. Core 2 duo outperforms current amd offerings across the board, you can't really go wrong with a good amd chip but you'll do better going c2d right now. Performance/$ is better with the C2D, not to mention they are amazingly overclockable if you're into that sort of thing. I've oc'd my 6400 from 2.13ghz --> 3.092ghz with no change in voltages, completely stable prime95 (stability/folding program) 12+ hours. The general concensus among enthusiasts (nerds like me that is) is that amd has some catching up to do.
