you don't pay VAT on teh purchase, but be carefull, the tax man can come knocking at your door anytime to claim that VAT back. It happens a lot with the eve store, DHL pays income duty to bring your stuff into the uk then charges you for it a few weeks later without you knowing anything about it.

You are still liable to pay VAT on the timecode as it is for electronic enteretainment, just because the tax man ain't waving a bill does not mean you can just walk away with no comeback.

Yep a few months ago I bought Sony Vegas 6 off their website and downloaded it off their website it showed as not having VAT as it was the USA, however when you come to buy it and you put your details in IE country UK it then adds VAT on.

Customs Duty is only payable on Goods entering the UK, as a GTC is sent in an email and does not pass through customs, DUTY will not be required on it.
An item has to physically pass through customs to be liable for duty, an email does not and therefore is not liable to duty. ------------------------------------------ BiteFight |

Actually for someone who doesn't like GTCs it's a good thing. I can now hit CCP in the pocket by reducing their income, but not too much and I can still play the game. It's kind of ironic I'm using the same mechanism I don't like to do it.
The shattered crystal guys must pay less to make a profit. So lets say it's the same another ú1.50 (I bet it's a lot more). So that's ú6 less for me per month a drop in the ocean but if a number of people did it, it soon mounts up.

The EU have a similiar tax to VAT (hence why the European price is more for EVE than the American), so I assume Brussels will net the tax.
If you pay out of the US, then no tax is incurred, but if you then import it to the UK, then a duty is liable (kinda like when you go through the red channel at customs with expensive presents) as Bosie said. It would be then collected by HM Customs and Excise and thus the British Government.
The trick is, they don't always collect on small occasional purchases.
However if you set yourself up as UK reseller and start importing GTCs in bulk from the shatteredcrystal blokes, expect a knock on the door.
Edit: mis-read the question slightly.

Yes, let's hit CCP in the pocket and make the game worse
