Just a quick question, is the only way to increase your security status to kill NPC pirates, or does mission running also lead to security status gain?

Killing NPC pirates is the only way currently to gain sec status standing.
Fast Talk will boost sec status gains.
You used to be able to run missions for Concord and DED (your sec status is actually your standing towards Concord), but that's been removed.

Fast Talk does work, it's just that the sec increases are minute.
If a rat gives you 0.04%, then rank 5 would give you 25% extra which is 0.04 * 1.25 = 0.05% increase.
If your sec rating was 0, then 0.05% of the difference between 10 and 0 is 0.005, therefore your new sec rating would be 0.00 as EVE truncates the digits rather than round.

Eve definitely stores fractions of sec status more than it displays. I have an alt who is listed as -2.0 on the login screen but can safely fly everywhere because he's actually -1.99

Killing Rats (NPC Pirates) will painfully slowly increase your PERSONAL security status. The status you see on your char sheet is your standing with CONCORD only. Its is the only way to increase it.
If you are in a corporation, running missions will increase your standing ALOT with the corporation you are running missions for. My corp plans to have a POS (Player Owned Station) in secured Gallente Space, this reqires (BS if you ask me) the PENALTY of having a high standing with the Gallente Federation.
The corp has gone for a 0.0 standing to a 1.4 Standing with the Gallente Federation in about 2 days, doing missions for the Galantee Navy, Customs and Senate. These standing are added in at the nightly shutdown.

Pirates in missions increase it as well.
I seem to get sec status gains from my serpentis level 4s. I've gone from -4.3 to -2.1 in about two weeks of level 4 missioning ONLY.
