Hiya
Soon ill be buyin a shiny new pc and i was wondering if A dual-core pc is any good for games and wether i use a dual or a single core.
Ill be a little more specific, due to prices I either get to choose a 2x 2.66 Ghz processor , or a 3.4 Ghz single core. Keep in mind that this isnt just for EVE id like to play the next generation of games too like SPORE, Supreme command and C&C tiberium wars
If the dual core doesnt have any effect on gaming the single would ofcourse be much better. I dont need to run multiple clients and im not planning to play 2 games at once :P
I am however thinking of using fraps, would love to make some badass movies. so would in this case be a dual better?
Anyways tell me which u prefer and why :)
the system will run with a 512 mb vid card and 1 Gig of RAM. if i pick the single core i might upgrade that to 2Gb RAM ---------------------------------------- I R ZEPHIRZ!!!!111one

Go dual, almost all games released now - and definately the three you listed are dual core compatible (afaik).
As for FRAPS, it would probably be better - but I believe the main bottleneck with that is your HDD, not processor.
Also, get the 2gb instead of the 1gb if possible - well worth it, trust me. --------

Make sure you choose a good graphics card do go with your system also.
I would recommend the Nvidia 7900 GT and ATI 1900 XT if yo want to run the next generation of games fairly well.
If you have the money, go for a 7950 GTX or wait for Nvidia to release the 8000 series.

K dual-core is the future eh :)
but the single core is 800mhz stronger... but yerall sayin that the next-gen game will utilize both core for 100% which will make my core a sexy 5.22 ghz :D
for vid card im going to get this one:
ATi Radeon X1600 pro 512 MB ---------------------------------------- I R ZEPHIRZ!!!!111one

Ive not had much experiance with ati cards but i know that card will run any game on the market with max settings easy ;p, Ide still recommend a 7900 series card from nvidia though, they are just as powerfull but the main key is that they are much more user friendly :D.

Edited by: Blind Mary on 03/09/2006 23:40:40 was looking at some AMD processors recently, and if you buy the right motherboard you can get a better single core now, then later on upgrade to a better dual core when the price drops.
not sure for pentium though
*edit*
my plan was going to be get a faster single core chip now, and find a motherboard that will support dual core and sli. bbut only get a single sli card now.
then 6-7 months down the road when the dual core prices have dropped buy a better dual core, and also a second card to take advantage of the sli.
don't just think about what you need now think about what you might want in the future
