Hmm this seems to be the only subforum that I can post in, so someone else will need to move this where it belongs.
This issue may not be Linux-specific, but I can't find any mention of software-caused overheating on this forum or Google searches.
I run Eve Online on Ubuntu Linux using wine/PlayOnLinux and it works surprisingly well, except for critical overheating the processor. So hot the PC shut off a couple times.
The problem is the launcher app. With the launcher closed the CPU temp hovers in the mid-50s C which is warm but not critical. With launcher running it spikes and holds in the high 70s C, passing 80 C during high activity. The temperature spike remains even when Eve isn't running. Just running the launcher alone creates the temp spike!
I guess if someone really needs the launcher app to run continuously this isn't a fix. But I just close the launcher after Eve starts and have no issues after that.
Best of luck to anyone else having similar issues. |

Thanks for the feedback! Normally I would move this to the Linux subforum, but since you are on a trial account and cannot respond if I move it there, I will let it stay here for now.

I'm really curious, you put [Solved] in your title, but what was the cause and/or solution? Thanks in advance. |

It was revealed that the launcher running in the background was causing the heat. Setting the launcher to turn off when the game launches seemed to help him.

I generally consider any heat problem to be a hardware issue. At most the application can "peg" your hardware, but your cooling solution should be able to dissipate that amount of heat indefinitely. If it can't, you need better cooling, or a lower ceiling on how much wattage your hardware can pull.

Thanks for the feedback.
I'm no expert, but my money is on a software bug. It may not be in Eve launcher, it could be Ubuntu, wine, or my music software, who knows. Maybe not cause and effect, but a pretty massive correlation. 20C is a significant difference.
Could I improve cooling on my CPU so that it handles the demand of the Launcher app better? Probably. Should the Launcher app be using > 50% CPU across 4 cores when running in the background? I'm guessing not.
Maybe this is just my issue, so that's fine. But these are the kinds of posts I want to find when I feel like I'm the only one trying to solve some stupid PC issue, especially as a Linux user. |

On linux i don't use the launcher except when i need an update.
No amount of software bugs outside the kernel can cause critical overheating. Check that you haven't accumulated a lot of dust on the cooling areas. My laptop needed to be cleaned twice a year. I can be very bad even for desktops in some areas, double so if you have a smoker in the house.
Death and Glory!
Well fun is also good.
