I'm with ya on that Isyel. That would be awesome to have a mech MMO with EVE type PvP.
Unfortunately, there are no other games out there that can compare to PvP in EVE. EVE is a one-of-a-kind game.

The best space game that never was is still in my opinion Jumpgate.
Been around for years ( 5-6 now ? ) has very dated in station graphics . For various reasons , including its publisher ( not developer ) having problems it never really got promoted as it should have been .
But for pure adrenalin PvP there are not many mmorpg to touch it The difference between it and eve is that combat is down to tactics and skill ( skill as in personal ability not as in how long you have paid a company to spend time earning sp ) as the spaceship you are flying is controlled by the pilot via a joystick ( or some people use mouse/keyboard ) . To hit your enemy you need to fly your ship to make your guns hit .
If ccp introduced a zone with eve graphics and ships flyable like jumpgate it would be mind blowing awesome , not that current eve is not already awesome .

There is a game currently in development similar in style to Eve. It is called, as was already mentioned, Infinity: The Quest for Earth. The current graphics engine looks absolutely incredible, it loads everything on the fly with no loading screens (read: no queues). You also can descend into the atmosphere of planets and explore them. The universe is composed of BILLIONS of planets, all generated procedurally. It probably wont be ready for even a beta for a couple of years, but I'm looking forward to following the development process of this game.

I know what they should do.... Combine eve and a mechwarrior *style* game.
All hail eve, but imagine loading your pod into a mech and things switch to fps.
It wouldn't have to effect the eve universe as we know it, so no need to go there unless your into that kind of thing.
But say that's the only way to take over planets and get a non-eve-verse bonus.

[Wets himself] If only it was to happen.
Not to worry. I played in the beta for BT 3025. It was rather basic. It was also restricted to a 4v4 map. I did enjoy it but it had some work that was sorely needed. They pulled the plug only a few weeks before they were going to go Gold with it, even so it was not ready gameplay wise. It was very stable and lag free though
I also beta tested for Jumpgate. It was my first experiance with an MMO. I see Eve as what it could have been. When they announced they were going Gold with Jumpgate I was suprised since it also needed a fair bit of work. I stopped partcipating in the beta before they added the NPCs. Long Live Quantar!!!!
One of the few things missing from Eve is the Jumpgate flight system. Newtonian physics were awsome. Eve's point and click ship movemnet is quite simply pathetic compaired to Jumpgates control system. Best momnet in Jumpgate was heading for the docking bay of the "Great Potato" with full afterburners on while under attack form an Octavian. I hit the docking bay (which was only a smidge wider then my ship) going full speed... fomr an 80 degree angle. Full AB, swing the ship arround and full AB at an angle to slip into the docking bay. I am still amazed I managed to land without breaking up, if you hit an object going full speed in Jumpgate you died.
Anyhoo, my 2 cents.

No, nothing like EVE. Nothing.
We can all hope for World of StarCraft, I guess, but don't hold your breath.
Galactic Civilizations 2, "galciv2," is a strategy game somewhat like Master of Orion 2, but it is online only in the sense that final game scores are kept in a "metaverse" database. There is no player interaction in real time. Worth mentioning only because it requires a reasonable amount of intelligence to play it.

that would make me a VERY happy Messiah
to the OP - the only other MMOG that I can think of that has a decent space-side is SWG, but I'm not likely to recommend that trainwreck to anyone soon, particularly as the space-side is so underdeveloped & lacking in interested players (with the exception of one server where a lot of pilots congregated).
however, if you liked games like Tie-Fighter and XWing Alliance then the JTL aspect of SWG is just brilliant. if you're looking for PVP, however, you might end up doing a 'gate-camp' in Deep Space for (literally) hours before seeing another player.

Well this is a space MMORPG, you are exploring a galaxy and doing missions and pvp, and building your char, selling and building... you have a mothership that you extend, very cool. You can also have your avatar like in Eve, you can upload your own.

Battletech, where hath thou gone? Battlemasters, Thunderbolts, Marauders...infantry, armor, aerotech...so much there to work with.
As far as space MMO's, there aren't many. Jumpgate is still going, I think, but it's old and outdated.
X3 is supposed to be a decent single player space sim. You'd need a pretty good computer to run it though. It has production, trading, station building, combat, etc.

Jumpgate is still going I think. I revisited it a couple of months ago, but there are only a few hardcore players left.
While it still had life in it, I have to say jumpgate had the best PvP system EVER. *****pit view, joystick control, etc. ALSO, the great thing was that NOWHERE you went was completely safe. If you blew someone up in noob space, the only consequence was that you'd get a bounty that other players could collect with no penalty to themselves. No NPCs to come and instagank you . --------------------------------------------------------------------

Huh, funny, that's been spooking through my head for the past year or so. Wish someone'd develop something like that, I've even taken a stab at it myself (being a programmer is fun at times) but considering it's more massive than my usual "lets just build something stupid over the weekend" projects I gave up on it.
Still have a ****ton of design docs though.

Yup.
Except take out the cartoonish graphics engine and replace with EVE Style graphics or new generation graphics engines such as UT 07 Quake Wars.
If WoS was to be released that would be a must try game for me, but I doubt it'll be released soon since Blizzard is already making hundreds of millions off of WoW by itself.

I've played X3 before I had to downgrade to a less capable PC (and so cant play it without frying that one), and I've found it to be a worthy space game, even though its so complex it boggles the mind @_@

Theres no money really in spaced based MMO's the big sellers will always be the fantasy games outside of eve the only other game that has space flight is Star Wars Galaxies. BattleTech Online will be another great game but its going to be swamped much like Eve has been, its hard to compete with the fantasy genre.
My only regret is going out with a whimper and not guns blazing. |
