I look at battleclinic for different fitting builds to see what I might be missing. I see builds and figure to try them out. Well I saw a Tengu build for level 4 missions and I decided to try it out. It said I'd be doing at least 900 dps.
I can fit all the modules and have quite a bit of missile skills. When I fit my ship according to the poster's specifications I end up with 300 or some such DPS on my fitting window. What is happening here?
I'm using HAMs level 5 with Advanced HAM at only level 1 all non-specific missile skills like warhead upgrades, target nav, missile bombardment, etc are all level 4 or 5.
I'm just not sure what I'm missing as far as skills that would be contributing to such a steep dps decline or if the Fitting Window does not properly display the dps.
Thanks for time and input.
EDIT: To clarify I'm getting similar results with the Raven fittings I've seen/tried. However my cruise missile skills are not nearly as good so I had assumed that was the problem. |

3 things that can be the issue:
A. A battleclinic fit usually posts the "All V stats" so that you can compare one fit to another by leveling all skills to the max.
B. It's a horribly outdated fit that is from "Pre-ship changes" era.
C. Skills. You need more then just missile skills. How are your T3 skills as they matter too.

HAMs for a mission fit? blech! Matter of preference I guess.
In a level 4 mission, I personally found that cruisers and elite frigates were the biggest PITA with HM. With HAMs, they'd be even more so.
Don't forget that applied DPS is more important than theoretical DPS.
Old level 4 Tengu fit that wasn't meant to be elite, just usable with basic skills: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=1919268#post1919268

Most fits on Battleclinic have never been used in the real world. They just go to Eve Fitting Tool and put everything at 5 and then bling it out.
On the other hand good for them. I whacked some fellow the other night with a Astero fitted with a billion isk worth of loot. Then he came back in an Imicus fitted with 400 mill worth of fittings. All for low sec exploration!

I think J'Poll nailed it. I was running some missions on an alt with a guy that had a HAM Tengu that was 900+ dps and he linked me the fit (but I didn't save it as I don't like T3s) it was mildly blinged and he had HAM spec IV and all supports at 5 with +5 hardwires.
He also had to burn into range alot so meh.
Which is not really that impressive (no offence meant if you are reading this) as most races have BS that can do more than that with high skills, e..g Dominix, Maelstrom, Typhoon etc. |

Just FYI: Cruise Missiles are much better compared to Torpedoes. Torps have poor damage application against pretty much anything that is not heavily webbed and/or target painted.
Plus, Cruise missiles can be used both at range or up close.
Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective.

If it is your skills that are limiting your effectiveness then personally I'd stay with the Raven for a bit, get cruise missiles trained up, maybe go for a Raven Navy if you've got a bit of cash. You don't need to bling it out.
It isn't the greatest ship in the world and so it's not popular with EFT warriors, but is has a good tank and reasonable dps. Best of all, you can start hitting your targets at well over 100km and then let your drones deal with any little stuff that sneaks through.
To be fair I've never tried it in L4s - not really my thing - but I use it for null sec anoms and it can handle them all up to Forlorn Hub.

Simply put: no self-respecting and knowledgeable EVE player will ever post or reply on fits on BC, it's a cesspit of clueless EFT warriors and clown bling fits. The chance of finding a decent and logical fit on BC is slim to none. |

This.
I suggest to use BC for one thing...a rough guideline.
But as said. Most of the fits are made by EFT clowns and never been tested in a live enviroment.

If you put "EVE uni [ship name]" in your search engine it will take you to the EVE University ship database, and they usually have one or more example fits for each ship. They are not blinged out fantasy fits - just good solid (you could even say boring cookie cutter) fits that work.

For something similar to Battleclinic, with more actual testing and any stupid bling called out on being stupid bling, I would suggest trying O.smium.org. It also includes a fitting tool, which lets you fork the publicly posted fit, and I believe there is a way to set up the API in such a way as let you see exactly how the fit will perform to you.

I have the distinct impression that most people don't learn how to fit ships and just "ask others".
The problem with this is that others typically either don't know how to really fit a ship, or fit ships for a definite engagement/doctrine type and neglect to mention it. Also there is a bling problem. People who will fit a 50M module just because the t2 won't fit or because deadspace must mean your leet, while a small adjustment else where on the fit would make a t2 version work at a tenth the price.
I never just take anyone's fit, i check it. I understand it. I work out what works, where and why. I ask others and don't just let them get away with "oh god what a awful fit" .. Why it is awful may tell you a lot more about the person who thinks its awful than about the fit.
I also don't mind getting laughed at for fits I try that sometimes really don't work.
As for missions, unless your in a WH, i don't see real benefits with t3s over BS or BCs. My last cheap PvE loki was well over 700M worth (one place expensive modes do make sense). While my dirt cheap and don't lose skillpoints if i die phoon does better damage at greater ranges and can have a MJD on it! If mass wasn't such a problem i would run more BS in WH space.
Death and Glory!
Well fun is also good.
