Problem I'm having is losing too many torpedos to defenders.
I run one bay with defenders (which I always fire before launching a salvo). 1 bay with light missles launched next as a "decoy" for the NPC's defender. The other 3 bays are torps/cruise missles.
Any suggestions? --------------

Well, i love my caracal, and still even use it to this day.
But for NPC killing it would be the last ship id take, even an osprey would be a better option.

Infernos are cheap to produce.
Had a Moa, got a Caracal to try to something new. --------------

Missiles to hunt npc's?! You'll destroy the loot containers, man! Don't do it! ------------------------------------------- "My main griveance with the Caldari state was that once I had finished my work for them, they wanted me dead."

Okay, I'll bite.
1. Since you seem to find torpedos affordable, try cruise missiles. They're faster, and I think more agile. Perhaps you'll lose less....
2. Use Heavy missiles as decoys, unless you are within 10 KM of the target. Light missiles can't hit them from more than 10 KM, so I suspect the defenders aren't going after them as often as they might go after Heavy missiles. Plus if the Heavies land, they might actually make a contribution :)
As for everyone else, while it's true Caracal isn't a very economical way to rat farm, I bet it it fun ;P

Take a Rupture or MOA if your bent on having a ship with missiles to NPC hunt. That way you can use the missiles for last line of defense and the turrets for offense. And I still wouldn't hunt 30k NPCs and up in one of those.

Moa is the best ship for npc hunting with its 4 medium slots (use afterburners and hardeners) and the range bonus. You can stay at range and pick them off one by one.
Use rupture with projectiles (or thorax with neutron blasters) if you like close combat. Its more of a risk though, since high end pirates will warp scramble and webbify you if they get the chance.
