I don't understand wtf CCP is celebrating... They invented a game thats popularity overloads the system? What's all the back patting about? I had to log off and back on several times because of lag issues. Received several in game warnings about dire consequences for copying bookmarks, notifications about solar systems crashing and I'm supposed to be ecstatic at the mythical 30,000? hmmm.. OK if I must... YAY!!! Way to go CCP! I'll bake you a cake when i remember.
How about you hold off on the public celebrations until your system can handle 30,000 'capsuleers' at once.

Go and fall down a hole whiner. CCP have managed to break the same record on numerous times and not one other company is anywhere near equalling the achievement. They have made a name for themselves worldwide in the process. I think thats worth celebrating and as far as i can tell so do alot of other players. -----------------------

I sort of agree with the OP. Ya, 30,000 is impressive, but like most stories there are two sides to it. While CCP may be putting forth its best face and celebrating, they really should be looking at what kinds of upgrades are going to be needed to make 30,000 actually playable.
Its sort of like if America were to make an Autobahn like the Germans have, making it twice as wide and 6 times as long, and then touting that they have the most advanced road network in the world and all is well. Unfortuantly what they aren't telling is the tens of thousands of deaths due to crappy drivers trying to drive faster then they can handle. And if memory serves me right, didn't CCP just do a complete overhaul if their servers to handle the 20k player mark???

What they are celebrateing is that for most MM0's, the problems you just listed only take a few thousand players.
The fact that CCP has reached 30,000 players on one server, with just "lag" and DC's as issues, is pretty damn impressive when you consider that they have 10 times as many people on their server as some MMO's do on each of their servers.
on the flip side, every time they reach numbers like they did on Monday, they are able to datamine a LOT of info that will eventually go towards optimiseing the game.
I'm greatful that EvE has only slowly grown in popularity. that allows CCP to tweak the game and the servers constantly to keep it going.
If the EvE servers can handle 30,000 people on a peak day, what's it giong to be like on most days when it's under 20K? it means it'll be a hell of a lot smoother then it used to be, becuase of the optomisations they are able to do.
Was monday the greatest day to be on? No. I actually had lag out in a 0.0 system where I was by myself. Not something I'm used to. Buy hey, the rest of the time it's fine for me.

As loyal players we do care for this game and it's health, and seeing a 30K PCU mark shows that the game is being appreciated.
Granted many of us my whine about balance and such a lot, but it's all because we (and CCP) want to realise EVE's full potential.

We are all happy on ccp's behalf. But what good does an increased userbase do if THE SERVER CANT HANDLE IT?
Sorry for the caps there, its just that I think you are unable to understand without them.

hey look it might be some big acheivement but i don't care.. the system was on a virtual meltdown with all the dire consequence notices popping up on screen and an inability to jump between systems in a timely fashion...

Quoted for truth. Get your fricken servers fixed before you go on about 30k people online at once. I really don't see what the big deal is. All I care about is whether the game is playable or not.

I have to heartly agree all they have done with persuaing this policy is to break the will of the other 29999 players to continue to pay and play this poorly managed, bug and lag ridden game. :(
I've been playing right through testing and most of retail, all I see is daily more and more friends getting utterly cheesed off with eve and CCP, and I can't honestly blame em.
Even the hardcore older members are getting really browned off, CCP are slapping in features left right and center which would be good, if the basics of the game actually functioned okie, you can't even open the damn hangers for gods sake!
It's akin to fussin over a old car faffing about choosing which is the next colour your gonna paint it when the engines shot and the sub frames rusting to bits, and if that's not poor forsight and bad management I really don't know what is.
A games only as good as it's basic elements, the core gameplay and in eve it's suffered massive neglect for a very extended period.
I understand the need for Dragon and migrating to 64 bit code but adding more features while the games in such a shoddy state is just beyond belief and alienating many of your long term player base.
It appears CCP's entire approach to developement is shortsighted and reactive rather than proactive, and putting the core design elements and the basic functionaility of the game and the basic fundemental gameplay to the sidelines.
Not helped by the fact that every patch day is a utter nightmare, tried to patch today only to find the auto patcher locks the client, manually downloaded only to fiund that now all my years of bookmarks etc are now all out of folder as it's lost my client settings.
Until the games back in a sensible state *chirp* Kali, finish the migration to 64bit and get the gameplay back in order please!

Just because there's issues doesn't mean we can't celebrate, and to be honest, you have no right to say that CCP can't either.

I think it says alot and it is a great accomplishment to have your numbers growing this late into a MMO. but I fear what percent are actual players as opposed to farmers, as everything has gotten more expensive the more and more ISK is being sold and in third world countries this is a great way to make a living.
PErformance is becoming a serious issue as well, and some hard descisions need to be made ASAP before this trend reverses.
SO a good thing bad thing, mostly good imho as more money for CCP = more funding to keep on developing and imporving EVE. I hope the rights ways is all, right now PVP is bunk in EVE imho.

I was takin down a pos... and it had lag spikes but playable, and perfect the rest of the day. And, as you said, the bm copying caused big part of the lag...
There are more peeps with crappy pcs and connection problems blaming the game than liars imo... most of the time the only lag is in the really crowed systems, and during HUGE fleet battles. 30k players at the height of BM copying frenzy pre-patch. I'd say that any lag experienced at the time could solidly be placed at the door of the BM copying, not the 30k players (5k of which were probably alts copying BMs!)
I say wait for 30k a second time and see if it still lags then... not that I think you'd be justified in moaning at that stage either.

Runescape has 180-200k players on a single server? Since when?
I don't get what the OP is crying about (and yes, you're crying, like a little baby). I was on. I flew through a mission hub, the lag was no different from when there's 15k people on.
I flew to jit a(on an alt), and the lag was less than before the dragon patch. Quit your *****ing kid.

Wow, you've been playing since beta and it sucks so much that you're still around? I think you've been around for so long for obvious reasons. You like the game. Who else would pay for 3 years' worth of a game's subscription and stick around because they don't like it?
Oh and if your excuse falls somewhere along the lines of "It's better than all the other stupid games out there, so I settle with it." Then what the hell are you exactly comparing Eve to? Eve is the best of its class. It's a pioneer in things that other games wouldn't dream of trying to achieve. In my opinion, the only other "system" that could handle the things that Eve handles, but BETTER, would be real life.
So when you guys start flaming CCP, make sure you tell us what other game handles these things better. The good most definatley outweighs the bad, especially when comparing it to WoW or FFXI. (And I'm talking in the technical aspects, not the actual gameplay, so let's not go out on a tangent here and turn this into another thread on which game is "better")

Edited by: Talthrus on 05/09/2006 22:41:35 You whiners are sickening.
Hitting 30k players like this in a game has never been done before. CCP has done a damn fine job with this game and its servers considering how fast EVE has grown over the past year. Don't come trying to spoil the excitement of this accomplishment because you decided to hang out near places like Jita while everyone and their mother are frantically trying to copy bookmarks.
Take a second and think about the complexity of EVE. At any given time, you have the entire playerbase and galaxy at your finger tips. There are no shards separating you from the other tens of thousands of people online.
Does EVE work well most of the time? It does for me! In fact, I experienced nearly no lag after the 30k barrier was hit. Don't expect the servers to work perfectly in environments like Jita. Unfortunately, the current server architecture just cannot support 700+ people in a single system without some lag or the occasional crash. Some day, CCP might get the system to a point where you can cram thousands of people in a given system. Until then, learn to go a few jumps out of such populated areas and enjoy some smoother gaming.
As much as I hate comparing other MMOs, how do you think games like WoW would handle if 700 people were in a single city? I don't think it would work out too well to say the least!
Great job CCP - keep up the good work. ----------------------

Edited by: Hawk Fireblade on 06/09/2006 02:03:48 Many would disagree with you.
And because someone proports a different viewpoint or has the nerve to stand up and say ya know this stinks doesn't make them a 'whiner' either.
In reply to the 700 players thing, if you read the post this is one of the things I'm trying to put across, if there's 700 players in x spot it's because the design has put the players down that path in the first place, this is the problem with eve's combat if you take a example.
While I agree content is good, what I don't agree with the the utter lack of any developement into fixing the gaping design flaws in the game.
Combat especially, anyone tried alliance fleet combat lately?
It's comming to the point of take a meat counter ticket and wait for a frame update, blobing is the problem we all know this, but CCP hasn't done step one as far as any developement since beta to move the core fundementals of the game forward, no solid developement more vapourware and the quick bodge it fix over solid long term developement.
That takes the game into the future where it can indeed have 30k players playing in a smooth fast and enjoyable gaming enviroment.
Those guys over in CCP can code no problem, but the thing that's let them down time after time is design, understanding how a user interacts with that design and having the foresight to correct the flaws in the design before they hit the servers.
That and most of all appreciating that all the best things in life take effort and hard work, there's no quick fix for the best results, and in a game such as this you can have as many wings, swing and dings as you like but if the core really fundemental gameplay design is borked and next to non functional then it's a complete waste of time.
And probably my and many others biggest source of frustration with Eve, and ccp we all see the enourmous potential of the game, but years on were still waiting to see even the hint of it, especially in the developement stakes.
