Hi,
I have decided to take up a hobby of photography I have a budget of maximum about ú500 or $900.
I have looked around on photography sites and the leaders appear to be the Canon 350D, Olympus E500 or the Nikon D50. I'm just not sure which one to pick and if I wanted to buy lenses in the future which camera would be best.
Also are there any good value lenses that are better than the kit lens on these cameras.
Many thanks for any advice. |

personally I'd go for the canon, but I'm biased having used both the 350 film and digital models for the last year, amazing camera for the price, obviously you can't go wrong with the nikon either but I found the accessories a bit more expensive. ------------------------------------

I had the same dilemma recently- between the Nikon D50 and the Canon 350D. I ended up going for the Nikon, and I am very pleased with it, but this site is excellent for detailed reviews and will probably help you decide. --

Edited by: Suze''Rain on 06/09/2006 14:04:00 Edited by: Suze''Rain on 06/09/2006 14:02:06 I'm a long-term pentax user, but of late, I've been using a semi-SLR digital with some extremely good results. It's the Fuji Finepix S9500 - it's a non-removable lens (23-300 plus macro settings, with a 9Mp ccd), with a digital viewfinder display as well as a display back, and I've found that it is superb for a whole range of results. it's got a big advantage of being sealed, so no dust into the CCD. it's got proper flash and remote cable triggers for studio work, and very good range of manual settings.
in all, I'm much more impressed with it than the Ist DL/DS range from pentax, and until they bring out a decent body that matches my LX in build quality and that'll run with my Ashai and tokina lenses, I'll stick with the Fuji.
the only weak points I've found are a noticable shutter lag in very low light when compared to the top-end DSLRs, a lilttle bit of a difficulty on the manual focus, when compared to a pentax LX with a ground-glass split prism, and a little grain on 1600asa speed, but little worse than you'd expect on a 1600asa film in low light.
certainly worth a look at, and see what you think of it. for the last decade I've used Pentax LX bodies with ashai and tokina lenses, and, unless you're specifically looking towards buying glass under 28mm and over 300, you'll be hard-pressed to justify the cost on a DSLR over the fuji. I know a couple of professional photographers who've started using them in favour of top-end DSLRs simply because image quality is a match, and the cost is so much less, when the camera is likely to be obsolete in 4 years time, thanks to the progress on ccds.
hope that's some use to you.

Canon have announced the EOS 400D/Digital Rebel XTi... If I were you'd wait for that. Oh, and that site, DP Review, is teh excellenz for comparing cameras; you can compare them side by side for features even, and Phil's reviews are the best you can find. --

...and I second that e-motion, but Canon is up to the EOS 30D now to replace the 20D

I can recommend Canon too having owned a 300D and now own a 350D (for backup) and two 5D's all with L class lenses for wedding photography.
Nikon is also great from what I have read but I have never used one.
The 350 would be a great starting point imo.

20D is still around ú700 for the body - remember the OP has a budget and will need a lens too!

I reccomend you start with a film SLR :D get much much much better pictures
failing that..i always liked the 350D, but the D50 was always the choice of the proffesional when i worked in the industry. anyway as for lenses canon have slightly better lens technology but are going to be more expensive for the digital lens range.

Hello folks,
the fact that everybody refers to the EOS 350D is because it is the standard for digital SLR. And it's really a good camera. You won't need anything better than that in the beginning (and later as well). In fact many pros would use one for their work if their customers wouldn't consider it the "cheap amateur canon". I started photography a while ago with an old Pentacon MTL5B with a fixed 50mm Zeiss lens. You really learn the basics with such a camera. Once you got a modern toy with that fancy automatic program stuff you won't put too much effort into exposure time, aperture and so on (in fact there isn't really much more ). I would really recommend buying a solid old SLR with a good lens and light meter. You'll get one for 50,- Ç on eBay and it's a good starting point. It's satisfying making good pictuers with one of these and if you really like that hobby you can move on to a DSLR. For me it is always a pitty to see people taking holiday snapshots with a 3000,-Ç camera on full auto.
My two cents MM

hehe, i'm in a similar situation.
I'm not sure about Olympus (Canon and Nikon are still at the top), but after trying the Canon Digital Rebel XT (i think that's the 350) and the Nikon D70/D50, the Nikon felt alot more natural and less plasticky. I certainly don't know the details of each camera, personally, I'm going with Nikon. By the way, if you go Nikon and have $100 to spare, the new D80 is coming out soon. :P
I don't know much about Canon, mostly because I don't know anyone who has one. :\ -------

Edited by: Scorpio Dantes on 07/09/2006 06:44:26 I'm not sure a DSLR is really a good idea for new photographers - the prices are pretty hefty. Expect to spend $1000 for camera, case and maybe one extra lens. You can get into the hobby for a lot less than that if you switch down to a cheaper digital camera. Also, there are pretty good 35mm SLRs for half that price. On top of the camera prices, you are probably going to want Photoshop as well if you go the digital route, and that will cost you another $600 for CS2.
That being said, I have my eye on the Nikon. Looks like an awesome camera. If only I could find $900 in between my couch cushions, I'd get it immediately. Until then, I have my Coolpix, 3x 1GB memory cards and another spectacular Colorado autumn fast approaching.
