First, sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere. I went thought the first few pages and did not see anything.
Problem: ever since Dragon was released; at RANDOM times during game play my monitor just looses connection with my system. At first though... malware - NO, it ONLY happens when I play EVE and it is random, usually only once a night. Well, OK, small problem - just have to restart the machine since I canÆt even get my desktop back. I thought this might be fixed with the patch yesterday, but it happened last night again.
Now, this morning, when I click on character select, it dropped the monitor - this time after a power down, then back up, my monitor NEVER came on, WTF! I donÆt even get the Windows startup screen before my little green light goes yellow.
IÆm using a RADEON X1300Pro with Dell monitor. I have installed the latest video drivers, blah, blah and still no go.
Anyone else have this problem - is my monitor just whack and EVE has killed it? I have this problem paying full screen and window-mode at both 1024x768 and 1280x1024 resolutions.
THANKS for any and all help!

This sounds very similar to a problem that I and a few others are having. (discussed here.) We all have ATI Mobility cards, and we are all experiencing GPU crashes or freezes.
Have a look at that thread to see what the issues look like for the rest of us. I'm on the hunt to see who else has this same problem in hopes that I find someone who has solved it. In the meantime, I hope that CCP does something to address this problem.

Thanks! The first thing I am going to do when I get home is rename the cache file to (OLD) so it'll create a new one and see if that helps. I sure hate to loose my folders and overview settings, etc. but oh well - if it works.... that is, if I can even get to my desktop again.

Quote: EDIT: Just a little FYI, I got home and the monitor did not start up. I dropped in my old NVIDIA card and its working. I'm now going to rename the cache folder, restart EVE, then restart my computer with the ATI card back to see if I can get back to the desktop and into EVE without any crashes.
BUMP - For those interested, I put the ATI card back in and nothing.... bah! I dont have time to mess around with it until this weekend, so I am going to stick with my old NVIDIA GeForce card until then. When I get back to the desktop, maybe we'll see if the problem still exists (with the new cache folder).... if I never get back to the desktop (or into the BIOS for that matter) and my video card turns out to be trashed, I am going to be VERY eff-in mad
Warning to any ATI Radeon X series card users, beware.... if the cache clear does not help, you might think about switching out that high dollar card for a cheapy until CCP acknowledges it's a problem. I'm not quite sure how many of these "blank screens" I went through before the eventual "cant even see the system start up windows" but it wasnt a big number...

I've owned the X1300, X1600 (Pro and XT), X1800XT, and currently have two X1900XTX's. I've never, ever had an issue with the X series, and I know several people who have X series cards that have zero issues, so I don't think it's an ATI card issue (I even know several people at driverheaven.net who play EVE and have ATI cards (and have zero problems)). You might just have had a fuddy duddy card, RMA it and get a new one.
Oh, and the X1300 isn't a "high dollar" card, it's the cheapest of the X series. _________________________ Corp: www.ravenwarriors.com Cache Clearer |

It sounds a bit like your video cards are getting to hot.
This game in general really seems to put alot on cpu and video processing. I have a nvidia card, but my cpu fan goes friggen nuts when I play eve!

Yes Grez I know its not THE high dollar card, I was just making the general comment about X series. I'm glad all your friends are not having any problems.... like someone else mentioned go flame elsewhere. If you dont have an issue, get freakin lost. If it's not the card, then why was it ONLY happening when I played EVE and not crashing at any other time... and why did it NEVER crash when playing EVE before the Dragon patch, please explain that one oh I'm not worthy ATI sales rep?!?
And dont worry, I wont bother posting anything else, it's [insert derogatory adjective here] like you that make we wonder why bother trying to help in the first place - go blow something up and become the great minmatar warrior your destined to be and not the forum troll you currently are. If you enjoy being the troll, PLEASE post something useful if replying to a thread... not bragging about spending 2000$+ on video cards - it was boring the first time I read it in another post and it's still boring.
If CCP ever decides to own up to this, and comes up with a solution, will someone please contact me in game - I'd be willing to pay you ISK... just so I can keep out of these forums.
It's funny how I just played 2.5 solid hours and did not have any problems with the older NVIDIA card...

Thanks Sharupak. I have considered that and read about it another post... not sure if it was yours or not. On the ATI mine gets pretty loud as well. It was mentioned try dropping the ambient temp 10-15 degrees and see what happens -- I may try that as well this weekend.
I still can not figure out why it only started happening after Dragon - possible new code puts more stress on the card? Who knows.

Oh if this patch is when it started, overheating is probably not it then...However give it a shot anyways, If it works, Great! If it doesnt, well you will get a little better fps which is also a plus.

Wow... my Radeon 9800 Pro had a partial meltdown the other day too. New X850 pro just arrived which I will be installing tonight.
I've seen cards fail this way before, but I just figured it's 2 years old and I got unlucky and could use a new card anyhow. If others are experiencing the same thing then maybe ATI needs to figure out WTF is wrong with their cards.
Right up until it melted down the other day, I have never had any problems at all. After playing for about 2-3 hours my graphics just suddenly went all haywire and letting it cool down with no power for a while didn't fix it.

I am having exactly the same problem. My monitor makes a clicking sound then goes to a black screen with a monitor display popup stating that I have no video connection. Turning the monitor off and on doesn't work, nor does unplugging and replugging the video cable. The only remedy is to reboot (which is interesting if you aren't running the game in windowed moded and cant access the START button on your keyboard).
The problem started for me before the Dragon code branch, but it has only become a frequent problem SINCE the Dragon code branch. I don't exactly remember when it started happening, but it ONLY happens when I am playing EVE.
I don't know what temperature was in my case or for the GPU, but I will install my motherboard monitoring tool to check.
For the record, I use an ATI x800 gfx card.
One more thing to note - it seems to happen with much greater regularity when I am running 2 clients (2 accounts) on my computer at once. If the game is stressing out my GPU, does running simultaneous connections make the problem even worse?
Thanks - I hope we can find a solution to this.
EDIT: is it possible to fry your card or damage your card simply by playing the game?
I wish CCP would take the time to make SOME kind of reply to this problem.

I sugest you remove the side of your case and place a house fan next to it blowing tons of cool air at the video card and motherboard. Also crank your air conditioner. Also the fan is important - often times simply opening the case can cause worse cooling because it distrubs the airflow.
You can also try underclocking the card with the omega drivers.

I was able to solve the constant crashing plaguing my X1600. The problem was that the default clock and memory speeds were too high for that card to run stably. (I'm being told by some developers here at work that some -- or all? -- ATI cards lack dynamic reclocking of the core and memory (which NVidia cards have ... is that why my Nvidia card never has troubles?). I don't understand this well enough to act like an authority, but I can tell you with certainty that underclocking my ATI card a bit made it rock-solid.
In my case, I use a Macbok Pro, and was able to find a sweet spot just by looking up what Apple uses as its default clock and memory speeds. In your case, you should use ATITool to find the maximum compatible speeds for both (which takes hours!) and then reduce it below that for your playing sessions until you find your sweet spot.

Get the omega drivers at www.omegadrivers.net and see if that helps with stablity.
It sounds like your ATI card is shot I would RMA it and get a new one to be on the safe side.

Edited by: Dagejoor on 08/09/2006 17:51:11 same problem As OP but it spread to other games and on one ocassion just the desktop, ive got an x700 but know of people with 7800 GS and GT that its happend to with EVE but not the other games or desktop. it happens with all versions of display driver ive tried as well as direct x regrades. today was the first time it actually killed the card on startup though. i turned the pc off at the mains for an hour or two and its been ok so far since then.
ocasionally windows error thingy will pop up and say it was the video adaptor giving a stop error.

I get the exact same problem. My monitor seems to go into sleep mode but moving the mouse or typing doesn't bring it back up. Neither does unplugging it and plugging it back in. A soft reboot on the computer doesn't fix it. I have to power down the computer with the switch on the rear and reboot = the monitor then comes up fine. It only does this when I'm playing EVE. Sometimes it'll happen in a few minutes, other times it'll go for a few hours.. no rhyme or reason.
I'm running an Athalon AMD 3000 with GeForce FX 5700, 256 MB. I'm just downloading the newest NVidia drivers and will see if that makes a difference. I'm also going to try removing the case and adding a house fan to see if that affects it.
Thanks to all who have given there thoughts and constructive advice. *fingers crossed*
