Why is it that when CCP does an upgrade they shut down the forums too. Now I am not a computer expert, major novice here, but is it too hard to have all the forums and such and a seperate server. I mean at server shutdown you just copy/merge the character files and your done. Well was just curious if it could be done.

Forums are connected to the hip bone.. no, but they are connected to the database. So when anything requires the database to be shut down, the forums shut down too.

You guys really need to start looking at risk management :)
May have been ok when Eve was small, but now that it is getting to such a large size, segregation of non-related applications should be done. It just leaves you open to way too much exposure ala all your eggs in one basket....
If money is an issue on the consulting side, maybe consider barter :)
Cripes if it meant vastly improved performance and resulted in an appreciative player community, I would consider doing it for free.....

They must not be connected too closely, or the forums would be able to get our portraits from the database.

I've noticed that these forums are designed very strangely. They seem to load each individual post separately and connect to the DB each time.
No wonder there is a massive strain on the DB in and out of game...
I'm sure whoever designed it, thought it was a good idea at the time. ___________________

Oooh, a chicken-and-egg question... which causes more pointless database transactions, bookmarks or the threads about bookmarks??

And I thought it was to keep us from spamming out of boredom.

Those eggs have already been scrambled through CCP design failures, but I'm sure they have adaquete security and backups.

I run 5 seperate DBs, each has a fail over replication that keeps the system up even if the main server dies.
In this the web accessible data is also replicated to a sepperate server then the web-app servers use, so the users 'document' sites have the same info just 15 minutes behind the production data...
simplified.
eve-game-db replicates -> eve-forum-db on a schedule (character data is the only thing that would change, after all when was the last time you could access you ships/loot from the web site?). If the game is down, the forums stay up, and the character data is brought up to date on the next replication of ONLY the required data.
so simple, but no, ccp can't do this just like they can't get a forum search tool (saying the google tool is one is like having the forums being phpbb and ccp saying "look what we wrote from scratch" after applying a theme...)
