Actually I have 2 questions.
1. Is it worthy bothering about having drones? 2. Is it worthy to train Drones skill up to 5?

drones (well heavy drones) kick npc ass, and can be used in small PvP engagements too, they are also good if u are a mining freak and want to use lots of harvesters, so lv 5 is needed for drone interfacing so u can use up to 10 of the lil buggers, and 10 heavys can do up to an extra 200dmg every couple of seconds (and are useful if u r jammed [as if u are attacked they will automatically retailiate - normally]) but if u only fly upto a cruiser and not gal cruisers, u cant carry many any way.

10 drones is a little unrealistic, though, exept you want to use 1 million skill points for 1 drone ;)
But yes for the original 2 questions.

Drones is one of the skills most worthy of being taken to level 5. If you do this you can very quickly get three more drones from drone interfacing and you will also have access to the mighty Heavy Drones. I recently went up to DI4 (because I was going on holidays for a bit) and let me tell you...9 wasp/ogres tear stuff up. Anybody who has even the slightest interest in being a miner need to get at least DI3 not just so they can run a lot of harvesters but so they can protect themselves when they have no weapons loaded. With DI3 and heavy drones you can easily protect yourself all the way down to 0.1 with no problems. A 3k rat basically dies instantly when confronted with such a swarm and a 20k cruiser lasts about 15 seconds. Now if you are Caldari or Minmatar and don't have a BS...you'll have trouble fitting all these drones in your bay but if you ever aspire ot a BS you might as well go for it...heavies rock.

i am currently training to DI4 and i have just got heavy drones. they rock!
drones are extremely useful for mining as they can double the speed if u have enough, and if you want to hunt, then heavy drones area a must have, i can easily hunt 6k and 20k pirates without guns now

1. yes drones are worthy. 2. yes it's worth training to lvl 5 so you can train the Drone Interfacing skill.

as far as hunting rats with only drones goes ... well thats fine if your doing the lower end rats for mining defense. But once you start chaining cruisers they will get killed off pretty quickly leaving you with no drones and a trip to your local shop to replace them

Drones are great... got DI4 and picking an occassional to train DI5 between other skills.
Never fit anything but mining lasers in my turret slots, trusting hvy drones to keep me safe.
Now only to find a way to fit 9 of them in my Thorax :)

Yes 100% heavy Drones kick ass, Last weekend, i was mining , In Alparena, when I get ambush by 3 frigates P/K with missile, I have only 4 heavy drones , but that was enought, In no time, 2 of the frigates was back in minerals form, But make sure you get a ship with enought Drone space. Drones LV5, Plus Heavy drones , are one of the best skill in the game.

whether you like drones or hate them, they are free offense.
If you are not using drones you are wasting at least a 1500 capacity drone bay in your BS. _________________ "For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack."

How do mining drones work? Do they have their own cargo hold to carry ore? Or do they deposit it in your ship cargohold? Does their weight or size change based on if they are carrying ore?

Lets see. When my corp mines we use Miner 2 battleships w/ 7 harvester drones and 1 heavy drone deployed. One heavy drone can keep the NPC pirates off your back in .5 and above. You require Drone L5 to use Heavies and more than 4 drones at a time. But if it gets hairy and we decide to mine in .4 or below we just let out all of our heavies and just use mining lasers.

Mining drones orbit the asteroid you have tgtd and have told them to mine. As soon as they are close enough each mining drone deploys a small miner that lands on the asteroid's surface and mines until it's limited hold is full. Then it lifts off the asteroid and and mates back up with the drone. The drone then flys back to your ship. When the drone gets close enough the ore is depositted into your cargohold. Thus said - it's good to be w/in 3k of an asteroid you are mining because it'll take less time for the drones to travel between your ship and the 'roid. Technically making the drones mine "faster". Their size stays constant. Basic at 50m3 and harvesters at 100m3.
