Want to share a story with you all.
Today, after getting back to Lonetrek region and preparing new thorax for pvp i headed to the low sec system where i havent been for a long time - Mara. As most of time this sytem was empty and i couldnt find targets in systems nearby as well. And so i went into Placid region - a well known ghetto where you can always meet someone to fight with.
I went for a systems a bit off the main route, places where i have never been before - this meant no instas for me :) I checked map and saw nice dead-end system which is connected to high sec space - i instantly knew, there will be someone ratting/mining or doing something what carebears do. They seem to like dead-end systems. I knew that dead-end systems are dangerous because its hard to get out sometimes. And still i went into it and didnt make insta-out.
Needless to say, happened just what i was afraid could happen - i saw some targets and quickly blew them up (rifter and covertor). It seems this made them really mad - now rifter pilot is camping gate in his tempest along with 2-5 corpmates depending on time. I went to watch some movie, came back and watched some more movies all in all having quite nice day :) Now, after 3h i docked and it seems they started camping station. And now i wonder - was like 2Mil loss (t2 fitted rifter) so painful that now he wastes his and his corpmates time to sit and camp for 3h. I can do a lot of stuff in that time so its not really a waste for me (real life stuff, alts *grin*), but they cant really go away from computer because then i can slip away. I wonder how long will they camp :)
I could have tried to get out - i could have tried making long range insta by using warpable objects which are on the opposite sides of gate but it could be inacurate and result in my death (and i dont want to lose those strip miners i looted :) )
In addition i want to ask you a question - whats the longest time you have spent waiting near stations/gates just to get revenge on someone? was it worth? Longest time i have waited was like 1h and that dude never turned up (had killrights on him), would like to hear about your experience.

That second part there makes it a bit more than a 2 mil loss.....

Those strip miners were from barge and that dude was in different corp, he lost more than 2mil and isnt camping... i belive he understands that this is a waste of time.
Start to get a bit bored :) what a coincidence that i thought about jump clones recently but my friend whose alt is running jump clone corp hadnt paid for that account :D

How do you know they donÆt have alts on the computer next the one they are watching the gate with?
The fact that youÆre posting tells me itÆs costing you a lot for those kills and that gear. I think your stuck and donÆt like it.
Now youÆre paying the price. If you donÆt like it give them the gear and pay for the ship. But the way youÆre talking about strip miners like theyÆre gold leads me to believe youÆre a poor pirate trying to hold onto your booty.
You did the crime now pay the fine.

Before I had ever gotten into PVP, My alt bought a nice ship and was bout to fly it home and equip it.. I waited for 20 minutes in the station till the skill finished training. From he station i warped to the gate to see a war member at the gate in a thorax. That was it for my nice new ship.... my Harpy. The Pod too... wich was only a loss of about 2 million isk on that..
Back at my nice Home station in Amsen, I noticed the thorax pilot had followed me. In the end I chased him from moons to planets, to gates, for over 2 hours in my raven. Finally as I'm trying to figure out where he might be (didn't know anything about the long range scanner) I get the feeling he is making a run for the gate. Off I warp and find him at the gate, I engage, deploy my drones and give him everything i had.... Wich was not much. In mid fight His corp mates comes in with a Raven of his own. I send my drones after the Raven and finish the thorax off with my missiles. The Raven then jams me. Being jammed the whole time, I tank the damage from his cruise missiles. After some amount of time that could have been 20 seconds or 20 minutes for all I knew while in frozen time... My drones, with the help of a fellow corpie in a ferox that came to help in his drunken state, put him into low armor and he warped off.
That, after ages of carebear missions, was my first pvp fight that i both popped a ship in and flew mine back to station. Also one of the milestones that put me nearly a solid year of nothing but pvp and pirating. I actually made more money from pirating than I had ever made from missions or 0.0 ratting.
What I am now all originated from one moment of wasting hours trying to catch a thorax.. It was by any means... worth every second of it.

Agreed with this character. Plus, in station you're a threat to others in the system. Thus you get camped in.

Non PvP'ers can be very naive. They can also have absolutely no sense of humour about losing there ships.
I've found that people will chase me, set up "cunning" traps and just plain camp me. It goes with the territory. Some useful lessons I've learn't that can help you beat the campers are:
- Have safe spots - by this I mean not just one....have at least 4 in the system plain so you can jump between them and confuse probes. Have planet safe spots that are just off grid so that someone warping to the planet can't see you. Have 1 or 2 unprobable deep safes. Do this for all the systems you're going to actively hunt in.
- Have an alt - make sure that you can check the gates with an alt so that if you're at a deep safe your alt can tell you which gates are clear. Jump out and go hunt another system leaving your campers wondering what's happenned to you.
- Have instas - really - never leave home withouth them.
- The shuttle is your friend. Pretty much nothing can get a shuttle on instas. If you're camped then jump out of system in a shuttle and go hunt somewhere else.
- Have a couple of ship stashes in hunting systems so that you can switch systems and still hunt.
- Beware the covert ops or force recon ship. Fortunately relatively few carebears fly these. These are your worst nightmare. They can appear out of nowhere and lock you down at 60 km. Be afraid. If one of these comes into system and you see it....or a player that flys one of these appears....run and don't look back....deep safe or station are your best options....failing that switch between in plane safes at 30 s intervals.
- Own a force recon ship or covert ops frigate. I <3 my force recon...fly around invisibly and stick your tongue out at your wouldbe campers in local. Or better still tell everyone in local that the campers are pirates!! Just watch out that you don't get de-cloaked by sign boards, asteroids, cans, drones, etc. and beware when you launch from a station you'll be vunerable until you can warp and cloak.
- <3 your scanner...it'll save your life.
Well that's about it...

Its pretty simple. They want to keep the system viable and the only way to do that is make sure you dont become comfortable there. Soon you will leave and they will be able to use the system again whereas if they didnt persist, you might hang around.

Edited by: Ultroth on 08/09/2006 18:38:18 A corpmate of mine before we joined FIX camped a station for 36hrs straight waiting for the CEO of the corp we were at war with as he seemed reluctant to fight himself.
I was there most of the time but am too old for 36hrs without sleep

Camped a station for just under 72 hours once. Was waiting on a war target to undock in his faction fitted Vagabond... Got about 6 other kills those days just sitting there. Finally got the vaga.
Was definately worth it. :-)

as someone else said, they might be running a second account and just waiting for you to jump out - but if you don't want to lose your ship and there's a clone facility at the station, i'd make sure it was up to date and then get a shuttle and do a warp-dance all over the system (assuming i got away after undocking) and try and make a jump out at some point - if i died in it, no biggie, but if i got away then i'd just wait a day or so and go retrieve the ship.
then again, i'm such an ass i'd probably stash the booty and launch in my thoax and see if i could run/fight my way out of there (but i have a good sense of humour about the game and my losses)

I once had a guy sit outside the station I was in for 2 straight days. I was going to work during the day so wasn't even logged in, but was checking with an alt. He sat out there hurling abuse at me in local and evemails for around 48 hours before he finally left.
I could have really undocked and legged it anyway, but it was more fun seeing how long he'd keep it up while I just skill trained.

Best way to find a pirate is to find where they hunt and come on them at a belt/planet... if you can. Thing is, unless you can tackle and hold for friends or catch them totally unawares that involves a "fair" fight, so your ass will probably get kicked lol
Don't think I'd camp a gate or station unless I'd just lost everything or was being paid to, that sounds dull as all hell... let them leave, be ready to hit them if they come back, and go mine/whatever for more stuff, makes more sense imho :)

This is why most anti-pirates blob. Of my 15 or so losses, with 1 exception, they are all blob losses. The fact of the matter is that as a pirate all you do, day in day out, is PvP. The people who are bad at this very rapidly stop being pirates because they run out of money. The pirate has three main advantages that should see them winning most PvP 1-on-1 encounters.
1. As a PvP character your skills should be set up to maximise your chances in PvP and your ship set-up will be honed to be a good PvP set up.
2. You get to select your target most of the time. You're not about to go jumping in on a BS in your caracal. I know that my Rax will own just about any other carebear cruiser providing the guy is roughly my age (3-6 months either side). My BC will take just about anything other than a BS or T2.
3. You're expecting to attack. When you hit someone it's fairly rapidly obvious when they've frozen or panicked. It happens fairly frequently that someone won't move and they won't hit back. The attack comes as such a suprise that by the time they've finnished flapping their dead.
So if you're going to hunt a pirate the best way to do it is to set a trap and blob. Try taking them on your own and there is a good chance you'll get your arse handed to you on a plate. However, be aware that your cunningly thought through trap may see the hunter becoming the hunted. Pirates are a naturally suspcious bunch. If the pirate sees you in local they may just set up their own blob trap that sees you and all your friends getting blobbed.
