I found a Data Site in Kizama system and tried to scan it down. I managed to only get to 88% and found out it was a Standard Sleeper Cache. No matter what I did or how small the configuration of the probes was, I could not reach higher.
My Scanning skills atm: Archaeology IV Astronomic Acquisition III Astronomic Pinpointing III Astrometric Rangefinding III Astrometrics IV Hacking IV Survey V
I'm using a Helios and have Gallente Frigate V and Covert Ops III skills trained, equipped with a rangefinder array I, a standard probe launcher and SOE probes.
My question is, am I doing something wrong, or am I lacking the skills or using ineffective equipment? I thought all sites were able to be scanned with enough time, or is that not the case? |

1. wrong forum; 2. it might be new sleepers site so your skills are a bit low to pinpoint.

There is also Gravity Capacutor Upgrade rig, that increases a ship's scan probe strength.
Also try Spread formation instead of Pinpoint, set 0.25 manually, and Alt-drag probes closer then default 0.25 would place them.

You can look for some tips on scanning. You aren't exactly new to this I suppose, but I feel there are tricks that aren't commonly known. For example, I remember some wormholers complained that default formations aren't that great. Maybe there are more things you can learn from people.
That said, these sites are new, so information on skill requirements to be able to reasonably scan these things down isn't widespread yet.
Also, I suggest you to train your Rangefinding and Cov Ops skills to IV. Not that long of a train, and it should help. Further training is advised, I suppose, but you know that. |

Tighten your probe cluster. Are you using the button to set the close scan? You should not be having trouble with the ship you are using.
But be advised, a covops in these sites is useless.

Your skills for scanning are not impressive either for this site, and standard probe launcher is not enough.
Don't look any further for negative energy, you will find it by being lazy.

Tbh i'd imagine its a lack of skills in scanning and ship. Get Cops to at least lvl 4, get a sisters probe launcher with corresponding probes and get pinpointing and rangefinding to 4. Basically those are what my skills are and I can scan them down. also I found using the default 8 pinpoint formation made it easier to scan these down.

Add a Sister's Core probe Launcher. Increase Astrometrics to V, Pinpointing and Rangefidning to IV.
Also with those skill even if you track down a Sleeper Cache (I think the "Limited" - but I might be wrong on the naming - is the one more appropriate for you "level") you will have a bit of hard time - to near impossibility hacking some of the containers. I have Hacks and Archeo to V and use a SOE frigate and it still pretti damn tought - firewalls and antiviruses everywhere!!!
Also I doubt the Helios can withstand much punishment from the clouds within - especially the ones arround the "phat loot & epix" container. Get an Astero.

How exactly would an Astero help with the hacking? They both have +10 to virus strength.
Sleeper sites can be done with Cov ops. You can make about two flight mistakes as long as you make sure the shield is back to 100% on your second try. Would an Astero be better for this? For the damage-part, yes, as it's more agile, faster and can take more hits. For actually scanning the sites down, no, not with the appropriate skills (Cov Ops lvl IV or higher)

Standard Sleeper Cache
Forget the Astero, you wont survive in this plex. Also your Hacking Skills are way to low for this site. You need at Arch 5 and Hacking 5 to have a reasonable chance to hack one of the container.

I finished a Standard Cache last night in an Astero. The Standard Cache does not require you to get close enough to be shot by the turrets (they were 150km+ away, and only had two cans next to them that were related to disabling them).
Astrometrics V all other related skills at IV Astero with sisters core probes and sisters probe launcher.
Had to tweak the probe cluster manually to get to 100%, but it went smoothly.

Ok, with all scanning skills at 5 and in a proteus with the electronics subsystem skill at 5, sisters probes and T2 launcher a .25au pinpoint formation gets the site to 95%. After that you need to tighten up the probe formation or use scanning mods or implants. |

If your Helios has two "small Gravity Capacitor Ugrades I" as rigs this should bring your probe strength to 97 or so. You can check the probe strength on the fitting screen. (Show carge info)
It should be possible to get a lock with that. (Tested this on Sisi a while back with 96,7 or so, but haven't found one of those on TQ yet, so take with a grain of salt.) Hold alt-shift to move individual probes closer to the signature. You'll need a pretty much perfect probe setup for 100%.

This. These sites are tough. And meant to be.
