So yeah, been reading through the sticky. Seems all I can find is 150mm rail setups (wtf), or mixed blaster setups.
I've got Advanced Weapon Upgrades IV, Engineering V, and Electronics V.
My question is: Can you possibily fit 5x T2 Neutrons, without gimping the ship completely? From messing around with the setup, it appears 5x T2 Ions out damage 5x T2 Neutrons in terms of DPS, and make the ship easier to fit.
So what gives? Did Neutrons get nerfed fitting-wise when BCs came out to make them more geared towards the Brutix? Or are they as pointless as it seems?
My setup so far:
5x T2 Ions
T2 10mn AB 20km scrammer X5 Webbie
T2 MAR 2x T2 Mag stabs 1x EANM 1x Energised Exp plate
I realise I'm ignoring the bonus to MWD use, but that seems to gimp the fit. With good Navigation skills, I'm getting 600ms with a T2 AB.
Suggestions please

That's a pretty standard blasterrax setup. Go for an active explosive hardener with the EANM. You're also really going to want that MWD for those blasters. Don't forget the drones.

Drop explosive plate for another mag stab then drop eanm for a dcu and fit a mwd. imo anyway i prefer gank over tank on thorax -------- Kill em all and let god sort em out

MWD + Active plate? Surely cap becomes and issue? Does all that fit, I'd have thought PG was an issue...

5x Electron IIs MWD / 20k / web damage control / 2x MFS II / RCU II / 1600mm
Not sure how tight that fitting is, might get a few Ions in. Alternatively 800mm, which would fit even more comftorably. Going without a buffer tank is downright silly though, EANs don't compare to the 100/200% bonuses to hitpoints of 800mm/1600mm plates (respectively). To fit Neutrons you'd have to use no plate (or a 400mm) in above setup - 3rd MFS in the plate slot would make it a remotely sensible setup for pure damage, but it would still be unable to compete with any of the other 2 variants in an encounter.
And you better fit an MWD, or you might as well self-destruct before launching. That alone is a dozen times more important than pondering the range/damage advantages of Ions and Neutrons (it's all below webrange anyway, so it's not a big deal like with BS-sized blasters).
As far as Neutrons overall go, they're worthwhile only mildly for their range (see above) and in setups with 3/4 damage mods already. Other than that, they don't alpha strike much better than Ions and provide a 4% ballpark DPS increase.

Grid will be an issue if you fit ions, but you'll be fine with electrons or a mix of guns. Don't worry about mixing guns, since they're blasters it doesn't really matter, because their optimal ranges are so similar.
You definitely want an MWD on a blaster ship in order to get in range as quick as possible.
An active explosive hardener really doesn't eat much cap at all on anything cruiser sized or bigger.
Start with the low and med slots, then fit as much ions as you can and however many electrons in what's left. I know you can fit one ion at least, and two sounds possible; I usually fit a nosferatu in that 5th high slot so that uses more grid, but if you were to fit a full rack of guns, I'm sure 2 ions and 3 electrons will fit fine. --- High quality pics of ALL EVE ships!

I have a few Rax setups up me sleeve but the general purpose config I use when I don't know if/what I'm going to be cornered by is:-
4x Ions w/ antimatter (no Tech II yet ), 1x med nos 1x 10mn MWD, 1x Web, 1x Scram 2x T2 SAR, 1x DCU, 2x EANM
I vary the scrams and plates from time to time, and also sometimes use a cap power relay if I'm going for the full gank when I swap the nos for a 5th Ion. Using the T2 SARs means I don't need an RCU in a low and I can be more precise about my tank cap management
But I've been out of the game for a bit so maybe things work differently now.

Ive seen lots of non plate thorax setups bbq other ships thorax is meant for damage if you want to tank and dps vexor is much better at it -------- Kill em all and let god sort em out

This is kinda the impression I got from the ship stats. Its never going to compete with something like a Maller for tank, but in terms of DPS (at optimal), is hard to touch by other cruisers. Thats not to say that tanking isn't a valid setup, but I have 4.8m SP in gunnery, so I feel like I should play up to that
I still don't see how I'm gunna get Ions IIs and MWD on there
Edit: Spelling 4tl

Well an RCU would help them fit or you may be able to do it with AWU elec 5 and eng 5 not sure, i go with 5 electrons and 3 mfs sometimes and it works out not bad -------- Kill em all and let god sort em out SIG COMING SOON |

I haven't got Quickfit at work...
I wonder if this would fit:
5x Ion IIs (I'm subborn! I want the DPS )
Named MWD 20km Scrammer X5 Webbie
1x T2 MFS 1x RCU (named or T2) 1x MAR 1x Active Exp (named, probably) 1x T2 EANM
Anyone tried something like that?

This fits fine. You don't even need an RCU, just a PDS. --- High quality pics of ALL EVE ships!

Sweet. See how that goes. Not planning on PvPing on my own, will be in a small gang with an AF.
Any ideas of DPS from quickfit?

Sorry, can't help with your DPS question, I don't understand how QuickFit works for DPS and I never bothered trying to figure out the math of it for myself. --- High quality pics of ALL EVE ships!

Ok, no problem. For future reference, the maths behind DPS when in game is as follows:
((Dmg multipler x Ammo dmg)x number of turrets) / ROF
Make sure you do it fitted, obviously. Doesn't really matter what ammo damage figure you use, as long as you are consistant between comparisons
