Big flaw in your concept is that you assuming naming systems are the same in EVE time as they are in real time :P

If you read my bio, 4174 is a particularly nice shade of green that my mother was fond of.
It's a reference to the science fiction story Day Million in which, yes, people do have colours in their names.

But yes, I've seen a few really weird names flying about

Mine was easy to pick, as the name follows me in real life and gaming life like a stray puppy wanting some food and a scratch behind the ear...
...It's almost genious in it's idiotic simplicity...
It is my nickname

Originally by: Ceanthar Cerbera Whats up with all these half assed attempts at naming you character? Are people really so un-imaginative that they cant think of a proper-sounding name? I mean do you really wanna be know as the darkhole penetrator or true sebiestor? And those are probably some of the better examples!
One of the things you dont want in ANY roleplaying game is names that A: make no sense at all (who the hell names his child blackhole penetrator?) B: is similar to or identical as some known person or character (Conan the barbarian)
Why invest several hours per day into a game if you cant even invest enough to make a decent name? It just is beyond me. And even if you dont care about your gaming experience, think about all the other people you rob of gaming experience.

Why do some people put the letter x before and after their name? It just looks really stupid.
e.g. last night I came across a player named xThe Prophetx
I just don't get it

It's simply taken from something, and I like that.
However it has flaws.
1. I sometimes hate being at the top of the chatlist most of the time, yes it makes it easier on me when scanning chats for specific people, it makes me easy to spot the second I enter say, a system.
2. People seem to have issues with pronouncing it, so I just tell them to call me Acin for short... And no, not like that one guy that made it rhyme with acid. I prefer "ace-in"

I dont think it ruins the immersion really.
None of us use our RL names in EVE so whats to say that pod pilots would choose to use there given names?
William Teach the pirate was known as Blackbeard so you can RP the fact that a pirate you see in EVE called DaRkLord of L33t changed his name to that because he thought it sounded more menacing then Percy Littlebottom.
The fact you hate the name is also RP as you can laugh about how the pirates think they are so badass with their l33t names.
Same thing if you see a char called Trader Dave. Hes obviously a trader and wants to state the fact.
I dont RP personally but even i can see how you can get roleplay out anything.

When I will start a second account I will baptise it "xgftejkdi". 2,5 years of experience in EVE learned me that this makes sense in fleetbattles.
The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of my corps, not necessarily mine, and probably not necessary.

Edited by: Xannder Phienyx on 09/09/2006 14:55:58 The naming dilema is one you will find in almost all online games.
People really think they are being funny and clever with they come up with these garbage names that show no attempt to give a damn or have any respect for the intent of the game. They seriously think they are funny and most of them are missing the entire point. Many(not all) of these are the players that you will find wreaking havoc "just because" and displaying all manner of immature behavior in-game. (Yes, this is a proven generalization, but definately not the rule.) This is not an assumption, this is my actual experience playing games online for nearly 10 years.
I wouldn't say that a player named Boobz McNutz is automatically a fliptard, but I'd keep an close eye on him/her.
All in all, I agree that names should be losely regulated. I do not think there is a way to (I wish there were) to tightly enforce real or real sounding names. I do think that names like Butt Munchkin and things along that line should be excluded by GMs.

tbh, I use the same nickname in all the games I play since '95.
When I want to RP, I just "invent" a story as to why my character has this name (took it from a book, rolled some dice to create a new random name for his newly given life ect).
Many times, nicknames of characters/people get there to stay and it isn't always bad. Most people in the normal world know and call me as "FFGR", rather than my normal name. _____________________________

My name is based on the assumption that in the future there will be only nicknames, family identities (surnames) donŠt matter because everybody is just data in medical databases (cloning) and capital letters at the beginning of words are seen as "sooo 2000". :D Although for fleetbattles IŠd prefere a name like "qugrxlrtu", too.

I use this name because I like raspberries (rubis idaeus).
Actually I was painting my Grey Knights and as I was looking in the Codex for painting examples I saw on of the the shoulder plates the name "Idaeus". So I took it when I created my third character (after experimenting with two others over the course of a year).

I'm unimaginative; Patch is what RL people call me, and it's been my online nickname in some form or other in every game I've ever played online. This here alt was called it because "Esquire" means the son of someone important, without a title of his own

all my old trials before I have this character usually involved my RL name only lengthened/shortened/changed in some way, and of course the surname's completely different (right off the top of my head to follow a double-letter thing I had for my IRC chatname, so if my first name started with a W, my last name would start with a W and so forth).
My current character is actually named from mixing two different Japanese-name generator names using my own name and my nickname.
Unusually enough, I'm half-Japanese to begin with, so the generator usually errored on me XD >
want a sig like mine? :D
