Why is it that the attributes dont affect the character in a direct way? All they do is determine how fast you train your skills. If youre like me and train most things thet means that any given attributes would have been good as the slow training in some skills would be compensated for by the skills I have high attributes for.
Wouldnt be that hard to figure out some direct bonuses from the attributes would it? Like if I have high perception I would have an easier time hiting with my guns. Or high charisma would give me better relations with agents etc.

Level 1 for a skill is the same level no matter what your attributes are. Just that with proper attributes you reach that level faster.
Plain charisma won't help you too much. You're in a pod. So we exclude your looks, way you use your body, voice etc... Interaction is completely computer aided. However, what counts, it's your connections, recent acts, diplomatics etc.. And that is your skills.
Also keep in mind, that a character that has perception 28, will more likely EVER reach level 5 on certain skills where perception is the primary or secondary attribute. Some character with 16 perception might never train these skills to level 5. So in a way, it DOES directly affect your character.

well yes you have a valid point. But its not the whole truth. If you want lvl 5 in that skill youll train it either way. Also that character with 16 perception might have 28 in intelligence and balance out his long training time in minmatar battleship with training alot of industry och engineering. And in that way it dont really matter as such what your attributes are.
Also with attributes having a more direct influence youll get more penalty from being in jumpclone. Or more gain from your hard earned lvl 4 implant.
But I guess its a question of balance also since all the rich characters would have even more headstart to the less rich.

So a guy with higher perception will train his shooting skills to higher levels, and will thus shoot better after the same amount of time. What's the problem?

A character with higher perception will shoot better than another for most of the time. The character with lower perception can catch up, but it will take him more training.
If perception gave a to-hit bonus, you'd have... the same situation, only with a larger differential.
So the question is, do we want more differential between characters with low perception and high perception?
If we do, wouldn't this purpose be better served by merely increasing the influece of stats on skill growth?

We need more balanced skill trees. More (important) skills based on charisma, more decisive high ranking skills for all professions other than fighting. Right now the number and ranks of skills needed for different professions if very unbalanced. It's too easy to be a part-time producer, basic scientist (gathering RPs with alts) or part-time miner. We definitely don't need even more incentive for high perception chars, as that's what we have already.
