Is it just me, or would the fact that asteroids, stations, and gates. actually have an effect on ammo. as it stands missiles/ammo fly right through roids/stations. to make it more realistic, wouldnt it be cool if you could dodge a missile by ducking behind a roid, or preventing EW from hitting due to things blocking a direct line of sight? more tactics in fights would be used, perhaps make them last longer. just a thought.

If I recall correctly I was told a while ago that missiles used to have to do this but regular ammo didn't. This made tactics a lot more important for battle, but I suppose people complained about the fairness so it was nerfed. I'm not sure how hard it would be to program in weapons not being able to shoot through large collidable objects...

Edited by: Verreuckter on 09/09/2006 04:54:29 well if the missiles doing it, but ammo not, i wonder why they didnt make the ammo hit like the missiles. meh oh well. this might be something that i could look forward to, hopefully bring some older aspects back (if this is what used to happen). itd make both ammo type users much more aware of their location in reference with their target. none of this fire and forget.

been thinking the same for a long time. I was nice when you could hide from missles.

one word concord and splioting it :/
when this was in ppl would use alts to intercept missiles so the target would get concorded :/

i never mentioned people, i strictly ment items that pertain to the group "large collidable objects" and asteroids.
in empire - empire wars - pvpers need to watch for line of site with gates/stations.

Easy to fix ; for a turret, the tracking computer of the ship should not make the turrets firing since it can't calculate a decent trajectory, and for a missile, the charge aren't activated unless it's close to, and ready to hit the target. So even if another ship hide it, it's not gonna hurt him at all.
This solve the realism issue. And only this one, since i'm convinced that it's not possible anyway to allow moving objects to block a shot, for two reasons :
- exploits, as you said it : hello, these are my three noobs alts orbiting in shuttle while I fight to, either, have chance to avoid some ennemy hits, or wasting the time of opponent trying to blow these sort-of shields. Stupid example, but you get it.
- extra server-side calculations needed for the damages and accuracy done by unpredicted shots on something not locked, with usuals parameters : 3 sorts of velocities, signature, etc. With the current locking system, there is a limit to the number of target a ship can deal with, to avoid extreme bandwith needs to deal with 80 targets in same time. Correct-me if i'm wrong. With the idea explained above, theorically, the number of targets are infinite, since every shot can potentially hit any vessel on the trajectory. In actual design, it can easily kill the server, I think.
But allowing the statics spatial objects to block a shot can definitivelly be really nice and maybe add some tactics. Losing someone chasing you in a belt would have a sense, at last.
In my opinion, the real problem of this idea is : there is not enough spatial structures at this time in Eve to fully exploit such a concept. Plus, of course, possibly the lag issue resulting of this extra parameter.

Burning your ab/mwd with 3xNanofibers and manuvering around asteroid fields without bumping into things take lots of work but it looks so cool when you do it righT ^_^

I would guess because rounds from guns/cannon/etc are assumed to have zero flight time, and so the game engine can't make a collision calculation if that is the case.
If gun rounds were given an incredibly high, but measurable, velocity it would technically be possible to check for collisions, but the processor overhead would probably be crippling. (I'm basing these suggestions on assumption of how games work in general, not from Eve-specific data.)
However, I would like to see obstructions work for both missiles and gun rounds, so fighting in belts would have an extra dimension, and you could actually have big heavily tanked ships 'screening' lighter and support ships behind them.

And the other guy not using his arties and waiting for you to screw up and bump somewhere, so he can f1-f8 while you're immobile XD
fun times!
