Hey guys!
I needed some advice here because I seriously don't know what to do. Here's my situation:
When I mine I have myself in a mackinaw while my partner Necronomicon2 uses a skiff. We jettison our cans when our holds are full until we have enough to completely fill Necro's orca. Necro then flies back to the station to switch into his orca while I remain behind and keep mining. The entire time Necro is in his orca he has his mining fleet modules active to boost my mining rate (unless he's in warp). When his orca is full he goes back to station to switch back to his skiff.
This has been a very effective mining strategy so far, but I was wondering if it would be more efficient for me to ditch my mack and get into a hulk and mine while Necro boosts me. He has mining director level 4 and industrial command ships level 4 as well.
I wanted to know how you guys would go about this. |

At a fleet size that small, you want to focus on minimising time spent not mining. Boosts are nice, but only become more effective than mining when your fleet is about a half-dozen in size (or larger).
On an aside note: Hulks are fantastic miners. I highly recommend you both fly them. In belts. You shouldn't have to move at all! Just focus completely on mining amount. |

When mining with 2 or less members, you both should be in Exhumers. Hulks would be preferred due to improved yield in mining over the Skiff or Mackinaw.
When you get 3 or more members in the fleet, you then start to yield benefits of having a dedicated booster (Hi Sec = Orca) (Low/Null/WH = Rorqual). The boosts you get from a fully skilled mining booster, especially a Rorqual easily gert your combined yield of the two miners to more than 3 individual miners.
TL;DR = keep mining as you are, just use Hulks. Get a 3rd buddy to mine, and get your Orca pilot permanently hauling/boosting. |

Without and information on skill levels here are numbers with max skill and 3% implant and no drones.
2 skiff/mack - 2702 m3/min defensive hulk/orca - 2763 Yield hulk/orca - 3011 2 defensive hulk - 3250 2 yield hulls - 3544
I would not recommend fitting only for yield in a hulk but it's up to you. |

Thanks a lot for the advice guys!!
I originally decided to use a mack and a skiff out of a fear of being ganked, but I'm now finding that fear to be unsubstantiated and cutting into my potential ISK/hour gains.
Me and Necro live in a tiny backwoods system far from any major traffic hub. I see on average between 1-5 people in local aside from the two of us, and 99.9% of the time they're either total noobs less than a few months old or miners themselves.
Necro is going to purchase 2 Hulks for us and I'm going to try mining with this setup instead. |

Error 1: You posted on the forums with your main. Code, or other gankers are watching. I'd give your new hulks about a week before they pop.
Error 2: Thinking you can mine enough to offset the loss of yield fitted Hulk(s) versus time. You can't. You are now a target. Folks are hitting up locator agents as I type.
Error 3: Not adhering to the maxim of "tank first-yield second".
Error 4: Using your orca for ore shuttle, putting it in a belt. You are a target.
Just some friendly advice. But sure.. go ahead and ignore me. You'll be creating content. |

I have to agree with Dornlin Labiani here. As a miner you are already EvE's No1 target for ganks, so using your main and telling everyone your modus operandi is a very bad idea.

Hopefully I'm not replying to a 'troll' OP here.
The way you are currently mining is a little strange as you have access to an Orca but most of the time it is not in use & you are not receiving the boosts. You are hardly receiving boosts 'the entire time'.
I would personally advise you to play the game in a fashion that you enjoy doing. If you are having fun playing EVE that is all that matters. The alternate route is to go the hardcore 'spreadsheets' which always seems more like another RL job to me. One mining vessel and one Orca is a method of mining you could use. Most will tell you that is not optimal but it does provide additional defence options and ease of use.
If you wish to continue 'jet-can' mining as you are now I would suggest trading in Cosmic Girls Mackinaw and buying a Skiff instead to run two Skiffs. The Skiff has similar yield to the Mackinaw but is virtually indestructible so the jet can is then the only risk factor. In your situation I would not recommend investing in Hulks to go mining in.

So you have 2 miners and one of them is also an orca pilot? Then I would say your orca is hardly relevant in this situation since boosts don't work in warp and if you jet your cargo it would be probably more sensible to have enough in those cans to fill orca. So orca pilot could just warp in, get everything, dock and return in skiff to mine more.
I was in similar situation few months back but my orca didn't mine just sat next to me boosting and following me around the belt so I could throw ore directly into fleet hangar. And then I wanted more so I created 3rd account. Result is: orca fills up so frakking fast that at one point I wondered whether I should get dedicated hauler but I didn't. 3 accounts is my max atm.
