Hi,
I'm going to be running 5 heavy missiles on my Ferox, and want to give over one medslot to making them better vs Frigates. I had thought of Target Painter and Stasis Webifier - is one of these significantly better than the other, and are there any other options?
Thanks!

There's a calculator on the last page of the Missile Guide that will let you figure out the relative effects of speed vs sig based on your specific skills and fitting.

Well, that depends on exactly what you're facing, but lets go with some assumptions.
Lets assume no skill bonuses. Lets say you're firing against a merlin using an AB. That gives your target a sig raduis of 40m and a velocity of 575m/s. Putting that into the handy Players guide indicates that velocity is not reducing your damage at all, but their small sig radius is. Therefore, a webber would be ineffective, but a target painter would help significantly.
If you instead look at a crow with an MWD, that will be going at speeds where a webber would help, the painter may be less significant due to the sig radius effect of the MWD, but that would still help too. You'd probably need both to get really good hits on it though.
It's important to note that this is different to the behaviour of turrets (check out that part of the players guide to see). With turrets, the effects of velocity and sig raduis are interconnected. Because of this, slowing a ship down is an effective counter to it's small sig radius. This is why webifiers, and long range (which reduces angular velocity, the measure of tracking) are so powerful in conjunction with turrets. For missiles, the effects of velocity and signature radius are not connected. It doesn't matter how slow you're going, if you've got a small sig radius, big missiles still aren't going to hurt much. Which means that you need to solve both the speed and size problems independantly to get good performance from missiles.
Consider the properties of the targets you expect to face, play around with that guide, and you should be able to see what modules will help best for your situation, and what skills you can train higher. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

I usually just fit a painter. If any ship, even a ceptor, is going to orbit you within web range, he'll usually have to slow down enough to where you'll get decent hits with them painted. Painter is usefull at all ranges, webber only under 10k
