A friend of mine doesn't want to play EVE any more (I know, how is THAT possible) and I want to take over his character on a separate account from mine. Let me know if I understand the procedure -
WRONG WAY - he tells me his account name and password, I start logging in and playing, and eventually change his credit card and personal details over to mine.
RIGHT WAY - I tell him my account name... he logs into his account and uses the "character transfer" feature to transfer his main character over to the account name I told him. He has to pay the $20 (which I will pay to him later).
Am I correct?

Oh - I'm guessing there needs to be a "free slot" among the three characters on the new account, right?
(or... what happens if all three slots in my account have characters?)

If your current account is full, you'll need to make a 2nd one, which you would need to do anyway if you wanted to train/log both characters at once.

Yes it is the right way just as you mentioned it.
And yes you need a free slot on the account you provide as the new host.
In addition to that, both accounts have to be actively subscribing, no trials, no inactive accounts. The character to be transfered also needs to be in an NPC corp.
If all that is true, all your friend needs to do is specifying his account name, your account name and the character name to be transfered. He needs to pay for that using a credit card.
The transfer is instant. The char will appear on your new account but is only playable after one downtime has passed.
