Poor guy, bad attitude, inarticulate, not entertaining. I wanted to quit every week for the first six months. Sometimes i think masochism is a valid posture for coping with an environment that exposes you to extended periods of shoddy treatment. On the other hand, a poor/inferior attitude makes anywhere awful, because you bring the awful with you. "Where i fly am hell, for i am hell."- Satan, Paradise Lost.

edit - either some people's sarcasm detectors are broken, or noone noticed this was posted by a Miniluv member. Well I started it. Watched the first seconds ... "**** EVE" ... and closed it.

To be fair, it's pretty accurate. People are generally so intent on killing people and going "but it's PvP in a PvP game trollolol" that they ignore the fact that games are supposed to be entertainment. It's not like I'd opt for a PvPless game, but look at the reaction when a newbie has a hard time, people immediately respond with "can I have your stuff" or "bye then!" and alienating them rather than trying to encourage them to enjoy EVE for the same reasons the rest of us do.

To some of us, an extreme challenge against the odds is the entertainment, not everyone joining hands and singing kumbaya.
This video is a perfect example of the wrong attitude some people have. A good new EVE prospect takes it on the chin (like most of us did), says "oh, I must be doing something wrong, let me learn how to do it right, then I'll show your ass what's what!". A bad eve prospect does exactly what the guy on twitch did (as alluded to in the comments of this video): they get a faction and deadpsace fit batleship and try to use it despite being 6 weeks old, lose it and blame the game for their stupidity.
Bad gamers who should not be playing EVE say "F you, you hurt me feelings". Good Gamers that fit in to EVE just say "F You"...period and keep on truckin.
What the guy in the video is derogatorily describing as what's wrong with EVE is actually what's right with EVE and what's wrong with most other (hand holding BS) MMOs.
What folks who think like you do for new players (with good but naive intentions) isn't "helping them" come into and enjoy the game, it's enabling them to come into the game and fail when someone (like goons or CODE or random ganker/scammer guy) demonstrate to them what EVE really is.

No, we ALL are living proof that he's wrong, including the guy who made the video.
It's the paradox of the veteran player who whines about how unfriendly to new people the game is. THEY were new players and at some point (probably when the game was way harsher) THEY came in and the game was harsh and yet THEY survived. But somehow, 'something' has to be done to draw in 'new players' because the community is full of d-bags wanting to chase them off.
Those d-bags are content. If a person CAN be chased out of a video game they pay for because another player of that video game was mean to them (within the rules of the EULA), they honestly didn't belong in that video game to begin with.
In a (admittedly imperfect) way it reminds me of "Truly False Uniqueness" ie they under-estimate other people so they think the game is too harsh for new people but wasn't too harsh for them personally because they themselves are awesome.
At the end of the day, these "think of the children new players" types are just super-egalitarian types types with a warped and kind of juvenile sense of 'fairness' that simply have made the wrong choice in game to play.

"How am i getting shot in high sec?!?!?" A perfect example of how High Sec fools dumb people into believing that it's "perfect-sec". This is why high sec is bad. Not that it would have helped, but I notice how this guy froze and didn't even try to tank, and didn't fit for travel at all. |

I have about as much sympathy for a ganker sobbing about hatemail they receive, as much I do for a miner crying about being shot at in hisec. Both of these groups have created the hostile environment which rears up every time one of these discussions come up.
All this has nothing to do with game mechanics and the overall technical direction Id like to see the game go. Sabriz articulates these rather well, in my opinion, and I'd much rather support that than the opposing position which could truly have a detrimental effect on the game.

The problem is when someone reacts like this they are generally met by trolls telling them to leave and asking for their stuff.

I'm not saying they should be shielded from all harm, but a fresh noob to this game will not have played a game like it, so compounding their already shocked reaction by acting like a prick really isn't the right way to go, yet it's the way most of this playerbase chooses to go.
To be entirely truthful though, Elite:Dangerous has got it right. If people want to just come in play a bit of spaceships and not fight people, they can play solo mode, while the rest of us can play open. If and when they decide to join in with the rest of us, they can. Because let's face it, why does it affect you if someone else wants to just be left alone? If they play alone or don't play at all, it makes no difference to me, but it's extra income for the developers from players who are off doing their own thing on their own.

No it is not, it IS the game. EVE is a game about people. I am able to PVE freely because I ENFORCE my in-game 'right' to that freedom (by knowing the game, and knowing how gankers and such think).
EVE isn't a themepark MMO where you get walled off from other people. Freedom means that people who like to screw with people will screw with people and you can't be a good EVE PVPr without acknowledging (and then defeating) that fact.
Quote:'m sure many people have reacted this way and been spoken to properly by someone who's not an antisocial neckbeard and gone on to continue playing and enjoy the game. That's because, again, this is a game with adults, a game of freedom. Freedom is messy.
Acting like a man in a game full of men isn't acting like a prick, it's acting you you actually have a healthy level of testosterone in your system. Why would you walk into a situation like EVE (real life correlations: a biker bar, a strip club, prison) if you are so tender hearted that your feelings get hurt so easily?

If they play alone or don't play at all, it makes no difference to me, but it's extra income for the developers from players who are off doing their own thing on their own.
Obvious Question, why aren't you playing E:D full time if it got it right and EVE didn't?
It's not a matter of something affecting other people. I don't care what anyone does or doesn't do. I'm saying that it's stupid to come into a game like EVE and expect sunshine and unicorns. If people want to pay 15 bux a month or grind a plex to play a game with a community that hurts it's feelings, well, to each his own. Some people like to get tied up and whipped and call that 'foreplay' lol.
It just boggles my mind that yo think what you think of the EVE community (and EVE itself) and you're still here. Elite has been published, why don't we let Elite be elite and let EVE be EVE? Or must everything conform to your particular worldview?

Well, at least two times so far we've seen unintended honesty from the EVE hating, baby hating CODE CSM candidate. Sibyyl. You of all people I know are the one easiest to trick with good words and niceness. Always believing in good parts of a person only makes you a target.

EVE is only a **** game for the lazy and unimaginative and entitled.
It's great for people who don't prejudge situations, who are self reliant by nature, who have a deep sense of personal responsibility (ie "my in game enjoyment is my responsibility, no one elses"), and who have a thick enough skin (aka mental toughness and maturity) to survive in an environment where everyone is free to act as they please withing the loose bounds of a Sandbox game's EULA.
Gamers tend to ask "is this a good game" and usually that's a good question, but in EVE, the question should be "am i the right sort to fit into the community and enjoy the game". If people don't ask the right question before subbing, it's their fault when things go bad.

Oh, people know it is, they just don't want it to be. There are people in life who are never happy with the way a thing is no matter the actual merits of the thing. I call them the "Change for Change's sake" crowd.
What's funny is that such people tend to be "X game is gonna kill EVE" types, yet when said EVE-killer game launches, the same people remain in EVE when they could be playing a game they actually like.

Why do they hate those who seek conflict so much?
Why do they come to a game where survival is profit in of itself and demand that everyone has a work-a-day job and a pension?

And if you want to play your own way and cry when you get blown up, you have every right to do that too. So many people want to push anyone that doesn't like getting blown up out of the game though, and use that laughable idea that somehow EVE players are elite. EVE players aren't elite. They simply whine about different things, like how unfair it is that NPC corp players don't have to be forced into PVP if they play well, or how when you wardec someone you can't prevent them from playing for a full 7 days.
Jenn aSide wrote:They get 'trolled' because this isn't kindergarten. You are actually joking right? The average age of the players might be higher, but the attitude of many players is considerably more childish. Just look at the forums, the ISDs require medals for the level of moderation they have to go through. This whole "we're so 'ard cos EVE is do dark and unforgiving" is laughable. EVE is just as forgiving, just in a different way. EVE players aren't somehow better than any other gamers, just more arrogant.
Jenn aSide wrote:That's because, again, this is a game with adults, a game of freedom. Freedom is messy.

Why would you walk into a situation like EVE (real life correlations: a biker bar, a strip club, prison) if you are so tender hearted that your feelings get hurt so easily? Perhaps because it's a game? Nobody is unable to play EVE, it's simply a different style of game. Take a FPS player, dump him in a top down strategy and whup his ass repeatedly, he's not gonna have fun. Compound that with laughing in his face and insulting him every time you dunk him with extreme ease, and he's just going to quit. Instead teach him how to more effectively play a strategy game and he'll be able to play to a semi-competent level and he'll be able to enjoy it. You'll even enjoy the actual challenge more.
In the same way, if people got taught in EVE to treat ships more like consumables than assets and got shown how to evade, how to fight, how to not get scammed, and most of the players who get pushed out of the game would adapt very quickly. EVE Players don't want that though, they want to roflstomp all over the noobs so they can act superior.
Jenn aSide wrote:Obvious Question, why aren't you playing E:D full time if it got it right and EVE didn't?

Or must everything conform to your particular worldview? I'm playing both. I'm not saying I don't like EVE or EVE gets everything wrong. There's plenty of mechanics I think E:D could be improved with which EVE get right. But that goes both ways. EVE clearly has a problem with engaging new players and keeping their income inflated with casual players. E:D not so much. It's highly intuitive and allows people to temporarily opt out of interaction if they feel overwhelmed.
And sure, much of the EVE community I think are complete plebs. I've been playing long enough to not actually care what other people think though, and I enjoy the game the way I like to play it. My issue is that I'd also like other people to enjoy EVE, but those aforementioned plebs tend to alienate everyone they possibly can. Honestly, if I were CCP I'd have banned half the forum posters by now, and to be completely truthful, myself included.

So, apart from proving his own point by purposfully displaying immature behaviour in order to win some sort of online measuring contest here in a forum, Kell pretty much proves that its not the game he has a problem with, but the players. He has a dislike for most of the community ("much of the EVE community I think are complete plebs") and would like the game to be modified not because he thinks the mechanics are inherently wrong, but because he doesn't like other's play styles.
A prime example of "This game would be better if you weren't allowed to play it" directed from him to the rest of us.

This is the part that doesn't make sense (well, out of all the toher stuff that doesn't make sense lol).
People DO enjoy EVE. The right people ie the people mentally suited to enjoy the kind of game EVE is. I'm not even a 'hunter' (I play as the willy Rabbit that munchs on lettuce but that the big dumb farmers dog can never catch) and I can't get enough of it. I've enjoyed the little of Elite I've played, but I'm just not in to 'starfighter' type games like I was as a kid (I played the hell out of wing commander on SNES, and Star Raiders was the 1st game i ever loved). But it's not EVE.
At the end of the day, the disconnect here is my inability to understand why the part of your post I bolded is your concern. Your inability to accept what EVE is (and who it's aimed at) isn't EVE's fault. This is probably why i have a higher appreciation of the EVE community and EVE itself, I accept that in a free situation, people are going to do things I don't like and behave in ways that i wouldn't, and that's ok. The only thing I can and should do is control my OWN behavior and be aware or my surroundings. |

A prime example of "This game would be better if you weren't allowed to play it" directed from him to the rest of us. That's pretty much the crux of it. I like EVE, and would like others to like it, and since CCP can't patch player's attitudes, they have to steer them by patching mechanics and enforcing a stronger EULA.
Jenn aSide wrote:People DO enjoy EVE. The right people ie the people mentally suited to enjoy the kind of game EVE is. Lol, it's a game. It's something that anyone can learn to play just like any game. It's different to other games in that ships are ammo, but beyond that it's exactly the same as any other game. It doesn't require a certain type of person on a special skill, it's just as game. Even the claims of it's unique single shard nature are exaggerated, since you're effectively instanced in population capped solar systems with shared market and chat. It's pretty much the same way WoWs battle groups are clustered.

No, he was stupid to play in an inefficient, ignorant and ineffective way.
Just because you want to do something doesn't make that thing valid. Reality (of the situation) determines validity.
This is the problem with lots of forum posters, they don't adapt themselves to reality, they expect reality to conform to their wishes. It doesn't work that way in life or in game.

I like the EVE Community. The game is really just a back drop for community interaction. If you don't like the community in a community based game, doesn't that say something about how you go about making personal decisions about your free time. You being here is like being a member of PETA who likes to hang out at this place in his free time.

What you are describing is what's good about EVE. it's different from other games and full of hartd core internet mofos. You basically support weakness. Most game makers cater to weakness by mitigating the amount of 'bad' that can happen to it's players. CCP says "HTFU and go get em, ADULT player".
This is why I oppose damn near everything you say, because the EVE you'd like to see would be some mushy crap that I would not like to play filled with people I left WoW/"LotRO to get away from. Lol, straight back to the "look how hardcore EVE players are because I play EVE and consider myself hardcore!". Eve players aren't hardcore, they are just people playing a game. Arguably there's less consequences in EVE than many other games, because at most you can lose some ISK, which most of us vets have more than enough to not care about anymore. I get so tired of listening to EVE players going on about how much better they are than every other type of gamer.
And no, I don't want "mushy crap", I'd just be happy to see CCP putting a bit of attention into drawing in and keeping a wider and larger group of players. And if the trolls want to keep trying to alienate everyone they can, then I'd have no issue with CCP reigning them in.
Jenn aSide wrote:I like the EVE Community. The game is really just a back drop for community interaction. If you don't like the community in a community based game, doesn't that say something about how you go about making personal decisions about your free time. You being here is like being a member of PETA who likes to hang out at this place in his free time. The game is a sandbox for whatever you want. You don't have to be part of the community and many players choose not to be. And mate, I've been here a long time. The community wasn't always filled with players who want nothing more to see other people's gametime ruined. People have always run around blowing each other up sure, but then following it up with endless insults and trolling and telling people to quit, that's not what EVE was about.
The thing is, like many others what you are doing here is refusing to accept that there's any middle ground. Because I don't like the level of troll that currently exists, you automatically classify me as "carebear hugging, wow playing crybaby" and lay out your arguments as such. That's simply not the reality. I like EVE, and I like the principles EVE stands by, but I certainly think there's room to improve it and bring in a wider and a stronger playerbase without breaking those principles.

I'm a newbie player, essentially. I have maybe 11m in training and I have been gone for over a year. I think the biggest mistake that care bears make is that, in an online pvp game, they are in control of their environment. His comment about people running another's "game experience" screams a lack of understanding that even I, in my newbieness, understand. I flew freighters in high sec for awhile and learned that no one is safe. Anywhere. If you play in this sandbox, you accept that occasionally you are going to get sand (that is saturated in p&s) thrown in your eyes. You don't have to be a ganker, you don't have to choose to kill people at all. You simply have to accept that this is not your world, it belongs to the thousands of people who play in it.
This may seem obvious, but I think that after 10 years, people should get it by now. I may suck at the game, but my enjoyment comes at the risk involved. Who the heck really wants to play a game with no risk? What fun is it when you automatically win? I can't imagine how terribly dead some people are in real life with that level of fear.
I love my Corp, even knowing that many veterans roll their eyes, some people see is as a threat, and others see us as free kills. But at least I am willing to go out there and play the game, rather than get upset that someone might blow up my internet spaceship.
Enjoy Eve however you like, just remember that someone else is your system is doing the same thing when they scan you down or suicide gank your expensive ship.

And imo it was his fault for not learning or at least joining a group that could have taught him - that's his screw up - and a screw up made 100 times worse because they were screw ups whilst flying a ship he couldn't afford to lose (which was probably bought with plex)...
What dismays me is that it's most likely due to players targeting beginners in general that led to all of those situations - wardecs on nooby corps, ganking a newbie on a stream, awoxing a newbie on a stream...
And I mean that's his other mistake is to be streaming his actions (and reactions) in a game like Eve... I'm pretty glad I wasn't on voice comms or a stream when I've had some of the sandbox kicked in my eyes as a beginner :) Yay, he was stupid to play the sandbox his way and not CCP/PvPrs/AWOXers way. Now he's been cured of his misconceptions and maybe he's having a blast with E:D. (BTW: In my EVE tenure, I've lost 2 Navy Apocs to NPCs. And no, a recording of my reaction in boyh cases would not have been nice to watch... ) No, he was stupid to play in an inefficient, ignorant and ineffective way. Just because you want to do something doesn't make that thing valid. Reality (of the situation) determines validity. This is the problem with lots of forum posters, they don't adapt themselves to reality, they expect reality to conform to their wishes. It doesn't work that way in life or in game.
reality also dictates "Just because you want to do something doesn't make that thing valid" goes both ways regardless of how you play or what you choose to do.
you aren't excluded any more than anyone else is included [about your conclusion]....
..... & EvE doesn't conform, if that is the case how come you are doing just that in forum? you believe the game is X and you continue to support that Y is X, when it is likely Z. and you expect others to conform to your "reality" when sadly life doesn't work like that.....classic strawman, not to mention a tad bit hypocritical. "It doesn't work that way in life or in game" yeah it doesn't for you either sweetheart! and if this is valid or accurate if it doesn't for anyone then i wonder who EvE does cater to. if no one then why does anyone play? 1. because they can, so they choose to do so. 2. because gameplay mechanics allow them to do so, and 3. because CCP allow people to do so. fact: people don't have to adapt, fact: reality does conform to my wishes. my wishes are based on consensus reality not some willy nilly philosophy. therefore you are wrong. if i am wrong care to enlighten me why consensus reality is wrong and you are right, because you say so and continue to believe your own self created delusions.
also how is it your business what other players choose to do, who the **** are you to say they have to adapt or you think they should adjust their perception/s based on wh? yeah no one said you have to. look at those that don't and soon leave to play XYZ: online again. that is the beauty of a Sandbox. you can play however you want, and others have that same right. no other player has the right to say they have to conform to your way. doesn't happen in game and it definitely doesn't happen in real life.....see what i did there [i used reality to discredit you]
also i play EvE because 1. i can, 2. because i can, and lastly 3. because i can. i don't care for people like you whom say your way is valid, my way is not valid. EvE is a sandbox MMORPG. that means that you can do whatever and it is VALID gameplay. |

"How do you recruit new people if you shoot them".
We weed out the weak from the strong. If you can not handle being killed in EVE, you should go play Farmville. It's literally that simple. People who can't handle dying in a video game, are going to have a bad time in EVE. |

This actually made me laugh, tbh its hard finding people who don't want to screw you over at sometime or another.
I mean to be successful in EvE you have to be a sociopath, Call BS on that all you want but its true. |
