Off the top of my head at least Mozart, Bach, Kraftwerk, Marusha, Makai, Scooter and Tokio Hotel were all pretty succesful outside of germany. |

The Scorpions for hair metal too.
Oh, there's Accept too, they may be more of a one hit wonder though.

Holger Czukay and Can, the ambient/avant garde band he used to be in. A pretty interesting guy. I lot of his songs are built around transmissions from around the world he picked up on his shortwave radio. And during the age of swaggering guitar gods, his persona was this eccentric nutty professor type, with funny hats.

A more typical Holger one, "Persian Love"

Because the rest of the world has a certain stereotype of Germany that makes them not recognize the majority of German music when they hear it. But Rammstein comes around and everyone is like "OMG THAT'S SO GERMAN"

Blind Guardian, Helloween, GammaRay, Warlock/Doro.
Most metalheads should recognize at least some of these names.
I always liked this album but... probably not as well known as all those other bands. |

The real question should be how comes it that Germany has so few good bands compared to its rather large population. Over 80 Million people and only a handful of good bands...now compare this to Sweden, with less than 10 million population.... The good music per capita quota seems to be way off here, and it's even worse with movies (We f*cking invented cinema FFS, now look at that shallow and meaningless crap that gets produced here every year).
German bands tend still to be quite competitive when smaller musical niches are concerned, for example goth/darkwave/industrial, like Wumpscut (very influential even on an international scale), or Feindflug.
Some slightly less dark music that is decent yet internationally mostly unknown: Karpatenhund, Klee, Metallsp++rhunde.
Sodom was mentioned already, but can we ever have enough Sodom ?
I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it.

I'm American and aside from Germany's 80s proto-black/thrash metal bands, I know Wumpscut, KMFDM, Kraftwerk, and Atari Teenage Riot. Even though they are not from genres that I'm very much into, I've had enough friends that are into those groups that I am familiar with them. |

I'm not from germany, but from canada, I listen to a massive list of german music... mostly metal/synthpop/futurepop/dark ambient/darkwave/industrial and its sub genres.
Blutengel (darkwave) Adrian von Ziegler (dark ambient) KMFDM (industrial rock) And One (synthpop I guess) Megaherz (industrial rock) - I know germany has a different label for it, this includes rammstein Eisbrecher (same as above) Gothminister same as above) Rothersand (synthpop) Lord of the Lost (industrial rock) Lacrimas Profundere (gothic metal) Heaven Shall Burn (some type of metal) Faderhead (EBM) End of Green (gothic metal/rock) Diorama (darkwave) Diary of Dreams (darkwave) Deine Lakaien (darkwave)
just to name a few
i have over 300 bands on rdio.com (like spotify but bigger library and better UI), i've seen a lot of them live across toronto-montreal
i won't list them all, and quite frankly i'm not too sure which ones are german or american (since hollywood has gothic culture)
P.S. not everyone listens to radio, some of us research music... back in 90s it was magazines and friends, now its simply suggestions off websites |
