Got my first solo kill in pvp today, with my RvB alt with 3.5 mil skillpoints. Worth noting my main has 7.5 mil sp and is totally carebear/nullbear. So even a noob can win a pvp battle (against something that shoots back even). Happened to catch it on video.

Just a word of warning, but posting killmails outside of the Crime and Punishment board is prohibited. I'd advise to remove the link.
Crime and Punishment: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=topics&f=252
(If your account isn't a paid account, yet, you won't be able to post there, but for future reference, killmails need to go there.)
Otherwise, congrats on your first kill!

thanks for the head's up about the killmail, took it off, left the video, just wanted to show other new players that one can pvp without a zillion skillpoints. I have fleet kills, but first time I got the drop on another player solo. |

Is 3.5m skill points still considered a noob? I've only been playing for 2 weeks and have about 1m sp even after using +9 starter pack booster. So I could only imagine that 3.5m skill points would take over 2 months+. boy I'm really in for a long ride on this game huh. |

I suppose everything is relative, I could have fitted this ship with about half that many skillpoints and about the same gunnery skills, since I have trained all race's t1 frigates, guns, missiles equally. But this game does have a long learning curve. |

I started on May 22, first PvP lossmail was May 24, first killmail was June 1. I had tried a few times before then but it was my first time out with a fleet, and I play pretty casually.
But yes, you do not need months of SP to have an impact in PvP |

Little background on me and my skills:
I'm still a newbie, about 6 months in, with just over 8 million SP. I can fly a crap ton of frigates (not all but quite a few) at a decent level. I can also fly some cruisers with T1 Weapons, which in fleets is mostly fine. I have the skills to use a Tech 2 armor or Shield tank, and fairly serviceable support skills (capacitor, navigation, weapon supports, etc...). If I had focused on one race exclusively I'd probably have even better supports, but I wanted to fly Gallente as well as Minmatar (going for Amarr next probably).
About getting started with PVP, from a Low Sec perspective:
The skills do take time, but the real limiting factor in PVP is experience and know how (both of which I still need a lot of). Took me a good 30 losses at least before I started getting kills (not counting a few ganks in HS). At first I was falling for every trap in the book, and attacking things that were pretty much a hard counter to my badly fit frigates. The first lowsec solo kill I got was after just over a month of training, SP and actual practice. I was ecstatic, I had successfully kited a Comet in a Tristan.
If I can do it, anyone can. Just takes a bit of research (what is a good target for your ship), some guts and a few frigates. The key here is to not get discouraged. As long as you learn something after every loss, you're good. Starting out PVP is punishing, and humbling to the ego. It also makes it the most rewarding feeling when you do succeed.
These are the resources that helped me learn the basics:
EVE Altruist: A blog by a well known and respected pirate. It's a bit out of date since he quit, but the core concepts still hold true.
Tippia's Newbie Skill Plan: Great skill plan to get you into the action at an acceptable level quickly. Builds a strong base to work from.
Keep in mind, my PVP experience is mostly limited to Low Sec, High sec PVP (including ganks) are different, and not something I understand well enough to feel comfortable commenting on. So again, don't get discouraged. EVE's PVP is worth sticking with. Low SP or not. Stick around this forum and read, it helps a lot.
Feel free to message me in game, if I can't/don't know how to help you personally, I can direct you to people who can.

one of my favorite pvp videos was two guys playing characters that were a few days old roaming around and killing stuff. the ability to fit a ship right, and pick your battles seems to be more valuable than some SP.
congrats on your first solo kill.

Well, there is no clear line where you stop being a newbies (heads up...there is a difference between noob and newb) and start to become a seasoned player / veteran.
But yeah, with just 3 months in, you are mostly still quite new to EVE so many will consider you a new player. I personally take about the first year as a guideline to move people from a true new player to a seasoned player with a fair bit of experience.
As for OP...
Just cause you use an alt, doesn't make you a new player. If I roll an alt, it's still a 4.5+ year player that plays EVE, on a new character...not a newbie.
But you do have a solid point. Most new players think that just cause of the low SP, they can't PvP which is false. If you play smart, not hard and you know what you are doing + have some sense in fitting a ship, you can be very lethal very early on.

that is why I also gave the skillpoints of my carebear main at 7.5 million sp, which by the definitions here still labels me a newbie, and which still can't fly frigates any better than the alt.

Those 2 Rifters in Null :P Especially the "heya we're 2 newbies, do you need help with your ratting? No really, we're just here to help, we're not at all closing the distance to tackle you... Nope."
To the OP: Given the complexity of the game and the multitude of play styles one will always be a newbie on some aspects of EVE, the trick is to specialise and put in effort to learn and get ahead and then you'll find that it doesn't take very long to stop being a newbie on that specific subject. SP isn't all that important nor is it somehow a measure or yard stick for how newbie or good someone is.
Also: congrats on the kill :) |
