Is there a better/quicker way to scan down sigs other then using the default pin-point probe set up ?
It just feels like it takes forever when there are more then 4 sites to scan.
Using Cov Ops with sisters probe launcher and sisters core probes. No implants at this point.
Skills are Astrometrics and Rangefinding at 5, rest are 4's. |

The thing is its pretty common for there to be more than 4 sigs in wspace these days. I find it is mostly experience that speeds things up tbh. |

I've heard a cube formation can help pinpoint quicker, but honestly the defaults have always worked well for me. Just need a little bit of patience when scanning :) |

You need virtues to get any advantage from the 4x1AU+4x2AU (and 4x4/4x8 for k-holes or large sigs)
Else, it's usually fastest to blob each relevant celestial with CCP(tm) standard formation at 8AU so you got all the crap sorted out, and then get sigs to 100% at 2AU. With a bit of routine, scanning a system should take 1-5 minutes and you're done.
Running 4 rangefinding mods helps (= grav capacitors and the midslot mods)

The default CCP formations are garbage, dont use them.
Old vid but principles are the same: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TisDb8c2aS4
PS: No, you dont need implants to use this method, it's just easier if you have them.

Just when I wanted to refresh my memory on better formations and methods, I saw this thread and hey - it has pretty much everything I needed. Thanks for bringing this up. |

Not sure what you look for when scanning, but I have my probes at 4AU and do 1 scan around a planet. If I can tell that a sig is gas, I skip it. I also skip data and relic sites (aka I don't scan them 100%..just enough to tell what it is). Also, I don't go from 4AU to 2AU. I usually am able to skip it and do my 2nd pass at 1AU at which point I have enough res for most WHs that I care about.
Hope that helps. Enjoy! |

not really. I fly an alt thats max-skilled, max-implanted, RSS probes T3 prober.
I have 2 configurations to my probes but they all revolve around default formations. Cases when you have to use custom formations, like 4 probes per pin instead of 8, like when you want to monitor 2 locations at once, are almost never needed in practice. |

See Jack's post - was having a play a few days back actually - default formation on a sig gave 68%, my old setup 72%, Jack's style 80%. I use a setup similar to Jack's now with some slight tweaks. |

if you want best strength, you sets of 4 probes should be in pyramids.

Doesnt matter how you tweak it, the base principle is that sigs spawn within 4AU of an orbital body. I dont really have to do anything much beyond just scanning every orbital in turn with a standard configuration at 4AU, that cleans up 85% of the sigs for me. The rest I just zoom in at 2AU and its done.
The formation in the vid is interesting sure, but overkill imho. |

Thx Jack for the link, not seen that one before.
i gave the cube formation a go, and got the sig ID pretty quickly, but i wasnt able to get sigs to 100% very easily (lots in the 85% range). I can see the advantage of covering a larger area, but seems just out of my reach at the mo.
Being a scrub, I haven't got all probing skills to 5 yet (covops 5, astro 5, rest are 4). FYI, I was using anathema with t2 launcher and sister probes (may give it another go with the sister launcher later / and some of those scanning mods). Seems that without a virtue set you still need all the skills maxed to make it work well, or maybe its the RSS probes.
I'll give it another go later once i can do a bit of k-space shopping. |

I slightly tweaked the setup to give better strength (which is more my goal) which along with max skills, sister's launcher and implants (no RSS probes just sisters) lets me nail sigs with minimum effort and still gives decent efficiency moving from sig to sig. Not tried on my chars that don't have the skills maxed yet. |
